This 1960s color film includes 1930s black and white footage on the design, fabrication, construction, and opening of the Golden Gate bridge. It was presented by Bethlehem Steel. The film begins with a bird’s eye view of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. A statue of Joseph Straus, chief engineer, is panned up. The bridge is shown from afar (0:11-1:20). A vintage illustration shows the topography and side-view of the bridge’s construction (1:21-3:57). Black and white footage prior to the bridge’s construction began in 1933 shows the Bethlehem Steel Companies’ factories, including the massive steel trusses in fabrication, parts being transported by train and boat, and cranes lifting sections for transport (3:58-4:47). Workers pour and plane the concrete on a yet-unfinished tower (4:48-6:21). A vintage color illustration shows the measurements and basic layout of a tower (6:22-6:59). Photos of workmen craning and measuring parts are shown. A crane moves a large piece of steel to the tower off a boat (7:00-8:22). Crane workers move large pieces of steel into the base of the bridge (8:23-9:35). A photograph of the first diagonal brace is shown, and the traveler - the crane system used to build the sections - is raised (9:36-10:32). Workers weld rivets on scaffolding, movable platforms, and elevators, shown being raised up and down the bridge (10:33-11:54). Ariel footage is shown of the towers during construction, and the final part of the north tower is craned into place (11:55-13:43). Photos show the progression of construction for the San Francisco tower (13:44-15:30). Workmen use automatically-turning spinning carriages to “stitch” the north and south shores together with 80,000 miles of wire (13:44-16:28). The finished cable bundles are shown, and those bundles are wrapped with galvanized wire (16:29-17:05). A vintage illustration shows the basic anatomy of the road span (17:06-18:50). Massive worker safety nets (credited with saving lives) are raised into place, with workers moving around them (19:02-20:00). Parts of the structure are moved on trollies down the supports, and cranes move steel into place with workers riding (20:00-21:04). Beams are swung into place by crane (21:05-21:38). The net is shown again, workers show off their hardhats, and a worker puts on a safety belt and ties himself to a post (21:39-22:15). Footage pans up the unfinished span base, where both sides are almost touching to finish the bridge, and chief engineer Joseph Straus is shown watching the final part placed in to finish the bridge’s structure (22:16-24:02). Painters from the lines, painting the cable bundles “international orange” (24:03-24:20). The sidewalks and rails are trollied and craned into place, and workmen fasten them (24:21-24:48). Workmen weld the reinforcing steel for the concrete road, and cement is manually poured and leveled (24:49-25:29). The finished bridge is shown immersed in fog. Shown is footage and photos from when the bridge was completed in 1937, only four years after construction began, and film from the opening celebrations (25:30-26:36). The film ends with color footage of the bridge from the time when the film was produced (26:37-27:15).

At age 19 in 1979 I landed a job at Bethlehem shipyard in San Francisco 20th and Illinois st. As a electricians helper. The old timers would tell me that I have a lifetime job so being young, I dug in….. what they said would have been true if not for the 1982 steel recession. I worked there till 1982 . I learned to not rely on others… become fully knowledgeable in your craft. I’m 62 years old and ready to retire. Bethlehem steel was like going to a university. I learned electrical principles I learned to operate industrial mills, learned to weld, burn, fabricate, repair , design, plumb, braze and work hard. And they toughened me up , I was a beast. These experiences Helped me get good jobs and eventually became a state licensed contractor. Also a consultant. I think of Bethlehem fondly.

I doubt whether there is a steel company left in America that can supply that much steel to build something similar today. If I remember, they had to import prefabricated steel beams from China to repair one of the bay area bridges recently.

After the cable was made there is now way they can get in there and fix it. Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous RU-vid users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! PeriscopeFilm, this must be a fresh scan. I've seen this before with pale and washed out colors. Now all of a sudden they seem clear and correct. almost Kodak Ektachrome-like. What's the story Morning Glory ? You're certainly not doing an immense restoration work. The jumps in picture and sound is a showoff of that. Have you found a new way of scanning or better source material ? Some times I've caught myself in wanting to order certain strips on made to order BluRays, but the very scare of pricing prohibits me from carrying out any orders. I bet a lot of movie/film-collectors would love to handpick their personal favorites and have a couple of BR's made with maximum available bitrates specially for themselves to enjoy in their homes. So how about showing examples of pricings ? You know.....8-10 filmstrips on one BluRay: Price $x.xx I could live with your www address as a watermark and frame numbers running, if 2-3-4 BluRays would contain my personal favorites at maximum bitrate 35-40Mbit/s at $10 a piece.

Thanks for your comment. This is a re-scan made on a new scanner we acquired a couple of years ago. We've been patiently re-visiting old films and making new and enhanced transfers. We don't offer Blu-rays or DVDs of our films -- we used to but it was too much work. Instead, we continue to be a stock footage resource for the world, by licensing clips from our library to content creators. Love our channel? Help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.

And now you have a TV pillow salesman urging the ex-president to overthrow the legitimately-elected federal government, members of congress openly trying to form a white-supremacy caucus, referring to Hitler as “the fuhrer” while the defeated former president urges domestic terrorists in Auschwitz t-shirts declaring “six million weren’t enough’” to arm themselves and storm the nations capitol. You’re not part of the problem, you ARE the problem. You’re destroying America.

There were some displays of hard hats, but these brave builders risked there lives on a daily basis. As did many in the steel mills.
