This is part 1 of the video series. I'm building this boat for my brother. My goal is to finish it in just a few weeks. NOTE: There is a 4-part update to this video series called "Lessons Learned."
Love the notched trawl technique for the PL premium. I built the 20 ft LYS last summer and using it in the Gulf of Mexico. I am powered with a 40 hp and it does around 24 knots loaded though thats to fast in any kind of chop. Cheers and thanks for sharing.
+sky5jump Thanks for the input on the performance of the 20'er with the 40. My Albion runs about 24mph loaded for the day with 2 fishermen. How does your boat handle a following sea with the flat bottom?
It's all about shifting trim. With the fine entry she will dig if you push the bow down to far. I have a side consul with an open lay out and carry coolers for benches so shifting weight is not a problem. I was 12 mile offshore of Sanible Island in 10-15 knots last Jan. I wouldn't recommend it but the boat handle it ok.. It was just forward of the beam and pretty sloppy but we stayed on plane and slugged right on home. In that case I shift weight to the weather side and let the chine work as a bit of keel. It helps to take out some of the slap.
I almost built the Key Largo from Jeff Spara's web site, but I built outside without cover and thought the LYS would be a quicker build. What did you use for Plywood. I used GP 3/4 inch form boards. I treated the inside with 2 heavy coats of linseed oil before priming and painting and 8 months later living outside in the drive still no checking.
Would you still recommend PL Premium for gluing the transom? I noticed later you had some issues with the keel board and was wondering if that was an entirely different issue or if that had changed your mind about pl premium.
I purchased the plans from Old Wharf. As you know, the plans don't include information on how to cut the curve on the bottom of the side panels. I count only 5 possible reference points to run a batten, including 2" at the stern and 3' at the bow. Did you use these (and the other three points) to run a batten? If not, how did you measure the curve on the side panels? Additionally, it doesn't look like you cut the bottom or sides of the transom at the recommended angles (to accommodate the side and bottom panels. Did you cut to angle or did you fair the transom side and bottom later. Last question. Did you attach the 2x8 floor butt blocks as you were attaching the bottom pieces, or wait until the bottom was attached to flip the boat over and attach them? I emailed Old Wharf with the questions yesterday and no one has gotten back yet. I am eager to get started. Also, the 4x4s that attach to the transom, did you cut them at the angle recommended for the transom side bevel? Thanks a million.
Mark, have you ever had issues with epoxy or PL not staying stuck to PT lumber? Im gathering my mats right now to do a LYS as well. I can get a really good price on some 20' 5/4 treated lumber from a local supplier. Ive been told epoxy and Pl will not stay stuck to treated lumber. Any input. PS/ I was able to buy good AC Fir plywood here for only 6$ more than the pine stuff....Im pretty happy with that!
+I am a Buccaneer I do not have a definitive answer for you. Basically I am not going to say "yes it will work". The reason is, I don't want to miss lead anyone. That is sort of like getting reloading data from the internet. use at your own risk. Blah blah blah. Okay...well that being said I have used it to bond plywood to treated. And no problems on the framing part. I did have it fail on a keel to epoxy/graphite using the fast grip. But in that application the screws sheared also. I would set the boards out on stingers to let them dry a bit. them glue up a sample. And do you best to break it. here is a web page to look at. www.simplicityboats.com/pl_premium.htm If I do another lumberyard skiff I will frame it out of treated. I hope this helps some feel free to ask more questions. It is a good boat.
Hi Mark. Are you still fishing with your Bayou Jubilee these days? That seemed like a really cool and different boat. Seems pretty fast too without needing a ton of power.
I still use it. I haven't been able to use either of my boats very much lately because of work. What's up with that? I have it set up to bow fish right now so hopefully I will get out soon. If you are looking for a boat of this type it is a good one. I got my 460# gator in this boat.
thanks! i was debating on which so this helps my decision. first build! was going to big or go home and do the twenty. but maybe its best to do the 16 sport first. thats the model on front cover. beautiful@@plywoodonframe
Chose the Yellow pine carefully and get tight grain with small(to no) knots. Consider using a wood treatment on the wood like Copper Green after install. The most important thing is to make sure that the boat is stored well.
