Building the Moroccan Court

In 2011, The Metropolitan Museum of Art opened the New Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia, which house the Museum's renowned collection of Islamic art. A vital part of the installation was the Patti Cadby Birch Court, a Moroccan court built by a team of experts-from curators and historians to designers and craftsmen-over many months. Complementing the works on view, which span the past fourteen hundred years, the Moroccan Court provides an experience of space and architecture while demonstrating artistic traditions that still thrive in the Islamic world.
This video documents a marvelous journey from Fez to New York, and the creation of a twenty-first-century court using traditional fifteenth-century methods.
The court was made possible by the Patti and Everett B. Birch Foundation.

Yes! Moroccan craftmanship goes beyond what is shown on this video. Many materials are touched by magical hands and turned into small masterpieces. Like wool for rugs (over 60 types in Morocco) or blankets, metal for lamps and doors , wood for furniture and doors, clay for dishware and decor, leather for homeware and fashion ... Handmade items are all over Morocco ❤

I went to Morocco in the early 2000's and fell in love with their architecture. Had the privilege of touring the Alhambra and other historic buildings. They were amazing. Walking down the narrow streets of the Medina that was plain until you enter the huge doors to a cool breezy courtyard with mosaic tiles and trees. Textiles , metal smithing, carving, and everything in between. Craftmanship was great. I would love to go back someday.

@@mbz9202 This isn't Arabic at all. This is Andalusi architecture invented by Iberian Muslims, with small influences from Persia. If you really look at it from a historical and architectural point of view it is much more Roman and Gothic in nature than it is Arabic or Middle Eastern in general. This is a style that developed in Muslim Spain. Even the typical horseshoe arch that you see in this type of architecture was implemented by the goths who converted to Islam. Many columns that were used in their buildings were Corinthians(Greek) columns, until later they developed their own styles and design of columns. Morocco and Muslim Spain have been one country in history for a long time (Almoravid and AlMohads), so this is how some of the influence came into morocco. On top of that, Most of the Muslims of the Iberian peninsuela that fled the persecution from the Christians went to Morocco and brought their Architecture, Music, dialect, etc... with them. And that's why you'll only see authentic Andalusi cultural legacies such as music or architecture in Morocco(and Spain) and nowhere else. Not even in other places where some Andalusi refugees have fled to in smaller numbers. I can keep on going, but this architecture isn't Arabic AT ALL. Like, literally the only Arabic influence on this architecture is the Arabic calligraphy. So, get your Arab arrogance and nationalism and throw it in the garbage bin. Morocco has been a place of many great nations either from outside or from within, with a great history, beautiful and rich culture and great diversity. So, no need to be looking down on Morocco my friend. And yes, I say this as a proud (not arrogant) Moroccan.

@@lusiusquietus3302 Why you assume that there is no Islamic monuments in Mecca or Damascus or Iraq just because you're ignorant of it?! countless of historic mosques from the 1st century of hegra. in Yemen, Hejaz, Syria, Iraq, Oman & Bahrain. The magharb architecture are made by the same Arab Hashimates that released Levant & Iraq & Yemen from the Roman & Sassanid occupation and built their very first grand mosques there. 715 Damascus Omayyad mosque, 714 Sana'a grand mosque. and as well the Qayrouan Mosque that is built by Uqba bin nafi in 680 and Uqba obviously was a hashimite from Qurish, which means the origin of the architecture by Arab builders as the architecture developed through centuries which the same rulers "Ummayads, Abbasid, Ummayad Emirate of Andalus" which proves my point that the "Moroccans" (Maghrabis) are basically the Muslim Arabs that conquered Spain and built the Andalusia dynasty. Concluding that Arabs have made their glory in the East before they make another glory and immemorial heritage in the Maghreb and Al-Andalus

Alkhwarzam ( Algorithmen in Latin ) and today Bukhara , samarkan, Kashgar ( West china ) were the most scienctific and architectual countries, from China there we muslims brought and learned many things, today arabic caligrapy is taken from chinese art, i traveled a lot around the globe ( many times to morocco and al andalus ) and i am still lerning other cultures and their roots, what i see in this video or i saw personaly, these all thing you can find in bukhara, west china, Bilad al sind ( Makli graveyard , even on sand stones and not on simple gipsum ) and some are in Malaysia. Al andalus was destination of many muslims from the world, these all monuments in andalus are older then any moroccans architect, this was brought to north africa by muslims of andalus when they left andalus, and went to north africa, all architect is in andalus older then morocan architect. if it was built by moroccan then first it should be built in morocco but is not, you can find 1000 of morocans who have asian faces, did you ever ask your self why? because these were the asian muslims who sattled in north africa after christian took over andalus. and there are still many people living in morocco with family name Bukharis.
