It's a crying shame that models of this sophistication are all but phased out in so called modern movies. They just give you an aesthetics and a feel that can't be reproduced by CGI. You did the Eagle proud. I love it.
The series was shown in German television about 1976-77 when I was 6 years old. I was deeply impressed by it. The german title was „Mondbasis Alpha 1“. Great Job of building this wonderful eagle!
@@MaxAfterburner It was dubbed. Subtitles were very rare even at that time (and before, and after). When I was a kid (60s) all TV-series ("Flipper", "Lassie", "Bonanza", .... you name it) were dubbed. Often they even had a german version of the title song. In fact I can't remember any series which had subtitles.
When i was a child (1977/1978) i was 7 or 8. A friend of mine had this Model (made out of metal) and he lend it to me so i could played with it. What a cool time i had. I allways will remember this Ship, it has a special place in my heart. Thank you for sharing your work.
I loved the series when I was a kid, thanks for the trip down memory lane. I always enjoy your videos for the background information to the subject. And of course a beautiful model as usual!
Likewise! I'd loved all the Gerry Anderson stuff up until then - that I could remember, or had seen -(a little bit of SuperCar), Fireball XL-5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, and Captain Scarlet, and then UFO! Missed most of Joe 90, and that Secret service one... Whatever, Thunderbirds was always the favourite, followed by Stingray! 🙂
Couldn't agree with you more. Through viewing this video, it made me realise how much attention Star Trek gets, and yet Space 1999 gets almost completely ignored. Loved this series so much as a kid. Very tempted to get the Blu Ray release of this show.
Hi Steve, glad you liked it and that it brought back memories of Alpha. I don’t think this one will do all that well and I quickly bled off some subscribers. But, what can one do? I already finished the warm-up intro to #32 a couple of months ago and I’m very pleased with it. I did my first sprue cuts and piece gluing yesterday on you-know-what for this next one. ”That’s one small step…” 😇😎😉
@@MaxAfterburner At the end of the day, the most important thing is to make these videos for yourself. The subscribers who enjoy all your work will stick by you. My philosophy is simple, enjoy different models for the variety they offer. Never truly appreciated how complex this model is. The thing I have always loved about Space 1999 is how much of the equipment is grounded in real world technology that we can relate to.
Another great build by the legendary Max Afterburner! Thank you for sharing with us this ;overly and nostalgic build of the most crash landed spacecraft of all time! Sorry to see the passing of the last of your great five - may their memories forever warm your heart on the cold Arizona evenings while you make you next build!
There was a joke in the SF fan community that Moonbase Alpha's automated Eagle factory had got stuck in the "on" position after the explosion that threw the Moon out of Earth's orbit and the people in the Moonbase had to crash at least one Eagle each episode to prevent them from being overrun with new-build Eagles.
Hey St382, it's a nice size and a 44" version would be magnificent if that ever became available. I hope you'll enjoy Project #32 when that one gets done. 🤩
As a lifelong space 1999 fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Your obvious attention to detail and loving care shows in every single bit of the build. My one suggestion would’ve been to add a bit of orange airbrushing to some of the red bands on the service module to bring up some of that tone but other than that, this is simply amazing. Great job.
Looks truly amazing you got just the right amount of weathering on there, I almost thought I was looking at one of the original models when you finished the engine bells, in fact it brought back memories of seeing the original models when they were on display in the UK after the show ended, Brian Johnson would be pleased with this rendition.
Thanks for the video and on the last segment it is so sad when they go. I lost my chocolate Lab in Jan 2022 and I still think about him every day, had him from a pup held in one hand. Loved that hound like a child. We gave him a good life and love everyday but still the loss hurts. RIP George Boy.
I've been a big fan of the show Space 1999 and especially the Eagle space craft... I've built a few of smaller kits when I was younger. And i would like to think that i did a pretty good job on them.. But nothing even close to your build.. You did a fantastic job , it looks amazing.. You paid so much attention to your detailing and the finished product shows that you did your research.. I definitely enjoyed watching your video and I appreciate that you shared your build with us.🙏
🙏 So sorry to hear the Depatures of Mooch & Sophie in 2022 ... May their Souls be Blessed to a Better World & Realm ... Thank You So Much for building this MPC Space 1999 Eagle Transporter ... Brought back many fond memories of the Space 1999 era ... 🙏🌷🌿🌏💜🕊
i loved this series as a kid my friend had a die cast model eagle and i lusted after one but never got one , very cool build , i,m sure the mclaren 720s headlights were styled on the front of the eagle as it always reminds me of it lol
Ah the Eagle, finest craft ever built :D From what I recall, Moonbase Alpha had the ability to build new ones, from spare parts I think (I saw it as a kid and read the annuals, so memory may be playing tricks on me). RIP Sophie. It's never easy losing family.
Hi PTONPC, thanks for your comments on Sophie. I believe that Alpha could build more Eagles, but they sure were destroying them faster than any factory could probably keep up with! 😂
I'm pretty sure one scene in one episode showed a production line where they were building new Eagles. It's been so long since I saw it, though, I could well be imagining it.
Of course I am late to the party but this is an amazing build. The paint and weathering details are flawless. I am not an expert but the finished model is pretty close to being studio perfect. Thank you for posting the video, and bringing back some fond memories.
I absolutely loved this program as a kid. I’m a big Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica etc fan and I still think the Eagle is the best looking space craft. Galactica and Pegasus in the last show are a close second. I had a die cast Eagle in the seventies, along with my six million dollar man 12” figure was my favourite toy as a child. RIP Sophie, it’s just like losing a family member when a dog passes.
A wonderful way to spend half an hour, watching an expert create a Rescue Eagle. I have all 6 Eagle variants mounted on my wall from the 12" Product Enterprise/Sixteen12 range. Beautiful.
great build! I am sorry about your pupper, we lost our fur baby 1/2/23, he was 16 1/2. had him since he was 8 weeks old. I had the 3 foot long toy eagle as a kid, COOLEST toy i ever had!
Hi Craig, sorry for your recent loss. I wish I could have all of mine back more than anything in the world. I would have loved to have had the large Eagle back in the day as a kid, but I never had the opportunity to own one then.
Loved the show. Loved the space ships!!! Wanted an Eagle kit myself when I was a teen, but never could afford one. This was so much fun watching, and you did an excellent job!!! I was surprised how BIG it turned out!!
Hi Mewregaurd Hissyfit, I have the same story about wanting an Eagle in my youth. I too, also like the physical size of this model, it's great. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it all.
Hey scottfordbrewer4380, thanks so very much! I'm happy to see that this video is still getting some attention and providing relaxed viewing for those visiting the channel. 😀
The show's model builders originally scratch built everything, right up until commercial models of the Eagle began to appear, and then they would go to their nearest hobby shop and buy Eagle kits to assemble to use on the show! An interesting circular process.
Probably saved money too. First they don't have to build every little part. Second, if they didn't like how the model came out, they could easily scratch build parts to fix whatever didn't match the original, which saves more money since they already had a model to modify.
Actually, no. None of the Airfix/MPC kits made at the time were used on the show at all. At least not built into Eagles, as the old kits were not accurate enough to film. But some parts from the kit were used as dressing on other models.
@@jimsmalleimb7709 Indeed. My favourite (over) use of the Airfix Eagle kit was in the Italian would-be Star Wars movie Starcrash. You can find it on RU-vid. The opening shot of the obligatory 'big ship' sees the model detailed with every single Airfix Eagle part on the sprues: engine bells, the landing strut parts, even the cockpit is prominently seen. Another kit they really loved apparently was the Revell Saturn V rocket. Look it up, it's fun to see how many bits you recognise! But indeed, no Eagle Airfix models were abused in the production of Space:1999 🙂
Well SF kits were used as greeblies on many ship models made post-Star Wars until CGI kicked in and kinda ruined the art of scratchbuilding. They did use toy blasters as the basis for actual blasters in the Star Wars prequels. Nowadays it's 3D printing, which opens up a whole new world of possibility.
That thing is so COOL! I had a thing for that “Ship” as a kid and thought about building one myself. That’s the BIG ONE no joke it’s not cheap. Great job, very cool and thank you for sharing this amazing hobby. I absolutely love it and I’m sure it would look awesome anywhere in house. JC : )
Thanks JC. The Eagle now resides on a glass shelf next to the USS Indianapolis heavy cruiser model. An unlikely pair, but that's where I could find some room. 🧐
I built this about nine years ago, and it was broken. I hand painted it, but now I have an airbrush...will build a new one. Johnson worked on 2001, good music choice.
Hi CF, I remember the Apollo astronauts commenting that when they re-entered the lunar module from their EVAs that their dusty spacesuits began to react with the air in their quarters. It wasn't all that pleasant especially with the sulfur components contained in the grime.
I love the show when I was a kid. I think the design of the ship has aged very well and your build is great 👍🏻 I would add some LED’s to bring it to life. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼
Beautiful work! I was very young when that show came out. I don’t remember much. But I remember loving the Eagles. I had a small die cast one that I carried everywhere with me for years. Your video was very well edited. Great pace. I liked the little clips you added in for comedic effect. I look forward to your next project.
@@MaxAfterburner the many hours definitely shows and is appreciated. Seeing the Eagle again after all these years was really awesome. Especially because it was done with such care and attention to detail. Thank you for that. You gave me a piece of my childhood memory back.
I was 5 years old when I saw Space, it was my loved series. We all started at school to make "Eagles" from cartons from cigarette packs - all children who had parents who were smokers were appreciated. :)
Hi Virgiliu Stancu, true fans make do with what they can to recreate their favorite ships! Way back when, I built a Battlestar Galactica out of cardboard during the original series run.
This brings back some memories about my youth, i was a big fan of that series at 12 years old. Made a model like this one when i was 16, but the smaller version ...
Great looking model! I'm sorry to see you lost your dear friend Sophie. I remember commenting on a previous build and you had recently lost another pup. It's so hard to say goodbye, but the blessing they bring us while living makes it all worthwhile. Take care!
Hi Kevin, thanks, I'm afraid I've lost a third doggie very recently. He was my last one left, Brutus. This is the first time I haven't had at least one dog with me in 21 years. My kiddos were the greatest part of my life. Glad you liked the Eagle, the video has seen a lot of interest. It has outperformed every previous Max_Afterburner video since December 2019.
Just bought the very same model but I have no experience building them, big fan of the eagle, was living in London when the series came out. This video is just what I needed to see, tons of info on how to build it. Thanks for sharing!
Hi josecastromora , that's great to hear and I hope you have a lot of fun building your own Eagle. Let me know if you have any questions should something arise. 😃
Hi AWARHERO, many have commented on the nostalgic memories that have resurfaced for them. I'm glad it has touched people in a way that I had not anticipated to such a degree.
In the late 1970s , there were a Ton of abandoned buildings in my city (Newark NJ) and while playing inside one ,i found an EAGLE ONE ... intact and in great great shape. I was a kid at that time so other kids found out i had it and bullied it from me. It was an awesome toy tho, you could detach the front part and the rear engine to make a jet shuttle, leaving the middle as an stand alone housing or base.
I LOVE how much detail you go into - I have just started the Hawk model and looked everywhere for a good demonstration to get realistic looking exhaust nozzles. The only thing I wish you did is list all the paints/powders you used in the description. But, nonetheless, a great and very helpful video! Thank you!
I remembered watching this show originally, to me it was so ahead of it's time!!! I still watch to this day!!! I believe David Prowse the actor who played Darth Vader in Star Wars was originally on this show!!!
Hi George, yes, David Prowse did appear on 1999. Also, many actors that appeared on the Space: 1999 TV show went on to do big and small parts in Star Wars.
Hi chevyfahrer, I guess for many of us the design has endured because it seems very much in the realm of what we're familiar with as far as its engineering.
Awesome model and even more awesome attention to detail by you! I've been thinking of buying one of these for a while and now you've inspired me. This brings back memories of my dad, as we'd watch it together when I was a kid, I sometimes forget how he was a scifi nut too.
Hi Kev5565 , I'm glad you enjoyed the model build and that it brought back great memories of watching Space:1999 with your Dad. I hope you take the opportunity to build an Eagle! 🙂
Hi Sotongh, I'm happy that many viewers have been entertained by the video build and maybe they'll discover some additional joy with their own unique projects.
Absolutely brilliant build!!! Love the attention to detail, the wash, weathering etc. However, surely,, the underside would have been dirtier, given the rocket blast/dirt/debris etc. Unless this Eagle had just had a jetwash!!! But such a petty point. Seriously, a great build, I want one!!!!! Space 1999 was a BIG part of my childhood, and this is a great model that really does honour those TV models!!! Excellent work!!
