Are you shooting more film than ever and want to build the perfect manual focus SLR system and wonder which lenses you should get? Let's review some options for this perfect system and I'll show you the system I built. Maybe something similar would work for you.
It doesn't matter which brand of camera you shoot with, it's the lenses that make the system, so let's build the perfect system, whether you're shooting weddings, portraits or looking for an everyday user for street work.
Rob Skeoch is a career photographer, working for five newspapers and wire services before joining the team at Major League Baseball for 17 seasons and the NFL for 14 seasons. Then he was a national manager for the camera group at Sony North America before going back to shooting.
Now he shoots for gallery shows around the world, mostly portraits and street work. For 35mm shooting he uses a Nikon F3 and a couple M-mount Leica cameras and shoots mostly Ilford film.

I moved back to film last summer (2023) and went with a Nikon FM, (debating if I should have got the F2, but I'm happy) For lenses I got a 35mm F2.8, 50mm F2, 85mm f1.8, and 105mm F2.5. I've been very happy with my decisions.

Back in the day I've had all those lenses you have on the table with exception of the 35mm. For that I've used 35-70mm f2,8 AF. Yes, auto focus lens on a completely mechanical camera (FM2) but it worked. And as an idiot that I am, I've sold it all. Now days I'm rebuilding my film camera system agin, this time with Olympus OM. Course Nikon got too expensive where I live.

Looks like we have a lot in common, my favourite lens is a 35 mm F1.4 which I have. I had the F2 for years and eventually gave it to my son. I agree with all your recommendations and I actually have all those lenses including the 135 F2, it’s a lens I wouldn’t use with others. I would go out and be using it by itself. The Bokeh from the 135 and the 85 were just unbelievably dreamy. Surprisingly the 24 F2 is also a beautiful lens which is nice to isolate your subject With a wide angle.The F3 was my dream camera which never materialized so I got an old Nikkormat EL and an FE with a motor drive. Now I use all these old timers on Z5 which gives them image stabilization and many of them I have chipped so they communicate with the camera. That’s why I have stuck with Nikon over the years because everything is still useable. Thanks for sharing your recommendations. Regards Gerry

Nikon had the benefit of kind of making everything all the time. As an OM shooter there were just a lot of later lenses that were both faster and sharper, at every aperture. My personal 50/1.2 is sharper than any 1.8 I ever owned including the very last MIJ version, at least in the center where it ever mattered to me. The f2.0 lenses from Olympus were almost always better than the 2.8/3.5 versions at any aperture except for vignetting. In terms of what I would carry around, 28mm/f2.0, 50mm/f2.0 auto-macro or 50mm/f1.2, 90mm/f2.0 auto-macro. The 90 is a bit big but probably the best lens the system ever produced for general purpose use. Just bought into Nikon for digital with 28 and 40, likely going to add a 105mm 2.5 to that. Funny, those first two are definitely "price point" lenses but on a 24mp full frame they are distressingly sharp to someone with a lot of very expensive vintage glass lol.

One thing I find interesting is just how great lenses are if you just go out and shoot with them and try not to be too critical and look too close. You can make such great photos with almost all of them. I wish I had the film system that I enjoy now, back in the 1980's when I worked at the newspapers. Back then any nice gear was likely out of my price range and we bought items without a clear vision for what we really needed and what was available. I read about gear now that came out in the 1980's/1990's that would have been so useful but we didn't even know it existed. There wasn't information available like there is now.

Great perspective. As a fellow OM shooter, I can relate to how you feel about the 90 f/2 macro. I have the 100 f/2.8, which is supposed to be my travel lens and is a pretty remarkable lens in terms of performance per size/weight, but the 90 is just so good -- from macro to infinity (and probably beyond) and straight from f/2 _and_ edge to edge if you care about that -- that it ends up coming with me at all times. I made sure to put a scratch on the body on day one just to avoid having resale value in the back of my mind! Ha. I tend to pair it with the 21mm f/3.5 or 24mm f/2.8 and either the 50mm f/1.2 or 200mm f/5 (a miniature gem). I also agree that most equipment is perfectly good enough. For me personally, the gorgeous OM bodies and manual lenses share the bag with a cheap and plasticky EOS 300 and EF 28-135 zoom---cheap and plasticky indeed, but very light for the focal length coverage, both body and lens are great performers, and sometimes autofocus makes a big difference. The OM stuff is most dear to me because of the sensorial joy it gives me while using it, but I'd be kidding myself if I thought that anyone else noticed its superiority over the Canon pair, at least for 90% of shots.

In 2020 I picked up a F3 HP with MD4 and 105/2.5 ais at a bargain price. I have since added a 24/2.8 ai (I like the longer focus throw compared to the ais), a 50/1.2, a 200/4 and a later generation 43-86/3.5 for snapshots. When I started photography back in the Woodstock era, common lens advice was to go with a standard, then half and double to acheive your trinity. I guess I followed that advice just to connect with my past.

Would you mind to share why you didn't choose the 58mm f1.2 and the 105mm f2.5? Thanks for your informative videos!
@stillshootinginblackandwhite
@stillshootinginblackandwhite 8 месяцев назад
Those are good questions. Although I have a 50mm, I don't usually carry it. In the past I had a Pentax 50mm f1.2, and didn't find it sharp enough wide open so I've kept clear of them since. I realize the Nikon is a different beast, but since the length isn't a favorite, I haven't really considered it. The 105mm is a great choice. It was my third lens when I first started shooting Nikon in the 70's. I like the 85mm better because my main lens is the 35mm and the spread between the 85mm and 35mm is right. If I used a 50mm, then the 85mm wouldn't be as good a choice since the 50-85mm spread is too close. Why carry two lenses when you could just take two steps forward. If I used a 50mm, then the 105mm would be perfect. Year's ago I hung out with David Burnett, he traveled the world with four lenses, only adding something really long when shooting sports. His four were the 28mm, 50mm, 100mm and 200mm. (He used Canon). So the 58 and 105 are a great combo, if you're using the 58mm as a starting point.

I've been getting into photography in general for the past couple years, but i really wanted a set up that wouldn't take up too much space when i traveled. So i ended up buying and selling Minolta SR lenses and cameras, Nikon F lenses and cameras, and finally settled on the Pentax K-mount system. 3 auto-focusing lenses in the form of their Limited's: The 31mm 1.8, 43mm 1.9, and 77mm 1.8. All can be found brand new today with their "HD" version but i went used to save a buck. From there you can use those three lenses to shoot both film AND digital. The Pentax LX and Pentax K-1 have been my go-to but any of their other cameras work out great. Now i have 2 cameras in film and digital, and just 3 lenses that not only do auto-focusing and manual-focusing, but meter 100% correctly in cameras 40 years apart in the form of the LX and their currently-produced K-1.

I've been a Pentaxian since the early 80s. My setup for film photography is my beloved Pentax LX with the quite modern Pentax 31mm F1.8, the old and proven Pentax 50mm F1.4 and a new Samyang 85mm F1.8. As long as I have a lens for the Pentax K-mount with an aperture ring, I can use it on my old Pentax cameras - Thanks for your advices - Holger

Back in 87' when I started shooting, I was all about Nikon as a working pro - I decided to go with a Contax for my 35mm system - I LOVE my Zeiss lenses. There is something about that Nikon F3 and FM2 that still gets me. BTW I sold my M4 3 years ago, I miss having her but, I didn't really use her as I mostly shoot with my Mamiya RZ or Rollei. Oh I didn't post my lens selection for my Contax - I have the 24mm f2.8, 35mm f2.8, 45mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4, 60mm Macro, 85mm f2.8, 135mm f2.8, 200mm f4 and a 28-85mm f3.5.

I think it's mostly habit- I've had it for close to 30 years, while the F3 is a recent acquisition. Objectively, I'd say the F3 is better- but I love the meter LED's in the FM2N, and it's just comfortable. I really need to use the F3 more- it's an amazing camera.@@stillshootinginblackandwhite

Hello, I use an Olympus set as manual focus equipment, which in my opinion has the merit of being relatively powerful, compact, light, with a wide choice of lenses and bodies and, apart from collectors' items, accessible at interesting prices. I have 2 cameras (om3 mechanical and om2sp aperture priority) and a range of lenses that includes: 24mm 2.8, 35mm 2.0, 50mm 1.4, 50mm 1.8, 85mm 2.0 and 135 2.8. Not many substantive differences with Rob manual Nikon lenses, except that the Olympus range doesn't have any optics open at 1.4 apart from the 50mm. And other difference too, i really appreciate the 50mm for doing very different things, from portraits to street photography.

Good reasoning and choice! Could have come from my side. I used the in late 80s-2010 the Nikkor 24/2, 50/1.8 AF (for added F4s) 85/2 originally with FE2. Added the 35/1.4 and 135/2 in 90s - but never used a lot like some others like zoom,..non Nikkor In the 2012 to today with D800/810 I use most of time these three Nikkors: 20/2.8, Micro 55/2.8, Micro 105/2.8. I added also for more occationally use an 135/2.8 (lighter and bargin as you write), 200/4, IF 300/4.5, mirror 500/8, Fisheye AF 16/2.8, Remarks: With digital higher ISO and without need of filters the max lens speed is more an sharpness area decision and no more speed/monopod/tripod topic. In analog times I used typically 300-1600 ASA. I might go back to higher speed lenses with analog on 35mm with my recent "good" FE2 addition. But at moment I focus with analog on 120 and sheet film and stay with my Nikkors on digital. Aside of price point (being for sure also relevant), I am not really keen on most of the AF(-S) lenses for the F mount due to plastic build plus often: size, weight drop of aperture ring (kill it for any Nikon analog camera option),... despite their often existing higher optic quality. The Z-System makes this even worse for me.

My Manual F-mount setup with a Nikon F3/T ‘champagne’: -Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 ZF2 for really wide photography -Zeiss 28mm f/2.0 ZF2 (not perfect [field curvaceous], but otherwise very good); much better then the Nikon 28mm. -Zeiss 35mm f/2.0 ZF2 (Best lens of this setup, Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 ZF2 even better but heavier) -Nikon 50mm f1.8 AIS pancake, build only for the local Japanese market from 1980-1982 (carefull Nikon made several version of the 50mm f/1.8, you need the all metal, close focus 0.45m version. Optical the best of the f/1.8 AND f/1.4) -Nikon 85mm f/1.4 AIS, which is bad at f/1.4, ok f/2, very good at f/2.8, but Excellent from f/4.0 upto f/16. -Zeiss 135mm f/2 ZF2 (Awesome portrait lens. When shooting architecture I will add 14mm to this. When I carry only one body and one lens it has to be the 28mm which is extremely versatile and I add 105 to it if I want something longer. Works well like this for me as I am a mostly a good light shooter when it comes to 35mm film SLRs.

Great video. On my shoulder strap: Nikon EL2, the manual SLR that has it all. It usually has the 35-70mm f2.8 AF-D on it. I love the photos I get with this lens when shooting film in manual, or digital in af. It has that build quality you're talking about. In my bag: 20mm f2.8 AF-D, 85mm f1.4 AF-D and a D750 body. I've flirted with 35mm for so long, that I've finally found a system that works for my style of shooting. Previous, I was a nikon shooter, having everything from the 16mm fisheye up to the 300mm F4, and of course, the F3. The final kit was an F3 and F100, 40mm Ultron F2, 85mm F1.4, 80-200mm F2.8, and the 300mm F4. I realize dthat I really didn't enjoy shooting my SLR as much, now I shoot my Leica, 21mm F1.4 voigtlander, 28mm F2.8 voigtlander, and 40mm F1.2 voigtlander. I have duplicates of these focal lengths with different apertures, but these three are the ones staying with me while I sell the rest.

I want to get several lenses, but I take it slow. Thinking to get 85 f2 first and then a 35. Really want the f1.4 but it is so expensive and hard to come by.

The 35mm f2 is sharper, but it's not always about sharpness. The 35mm f1.4 is nice, and a bit of a legend. Those 85mm f2 are nice too.

Recently came across your channel and watched this video today. I have an F2 and FM (needs CLA), been considering an F3. The concern is it’s an electronic shutter. What have you learned regarding electronic failures for the F3? Concern is electronics fail and the camera becomes useless. Thanks.

I'm not sure how long the electronics will go. I was out shooting yesterday and the battery died, which killed the plans. I had a spare battery in the car but by that time I was so cold I packed up. It was a bitter cold day yesterday where I was and the wind/snow was howling.

I see that we have the same tendency: getting used now the film equipment we wanted but could not afford 50 years ago (I also replaced my F3 and 35 mm with an F3/T and 36 f 1.4 on ebay). Rather than 85 and 135 I got and would recommend the 105 mm f 1.5 for portrait (in 1987) because of its high reputation. I have always had problem with the 135 the one I tried was not that great. And what about the 180 mm f 2.8?
@stillshootinginblackandwhite
@stillshootinginblackandwhite 7 месяцев назад
Those are great questions. I had the 105mm f2.5 years ago and loved it. My next length was the 200mm. Now I wouldn't be willing to carry that many lenses so for some reason found the 135mm perfect. I have the slower/smaller f2.8. The f2 version is nice but too heavy and large. The 180mm is also nice but too heavy and large. I am temped to get the 85mm f2 because of it's size but more likely to get the 105mm macro for those rare macro needs I have.

I read that you also shoot Leica M : I have been disappointed with the Sharpness of my 35mm f1.4 Summilux at Full Aperture -- I have 2, the Canadian one and the German one- do you think the NIKKOR 35mm f1.4 is sharp at Full Aperture ?
@stillshootinginblackandwhite
@stillshootinginblackandwhite 8 месяцев назад
For the most part a rangefinder wide angle will be sharper than a SLR wide angle because they have more freedom with the lens design since there is no mirror to keep clear of, so no I don't think so. The Nikon 35mm f1.4 isn't even as sharp as the Nikon 35mm f2. I like it, it's bright to focus, it's nice in low light, but it' not super sharp until you get down to about f5.6. As far as the Leica's go. I owned a Leica 35mm f2 years ago, but never did any head-to-head comparisons to see how it did. It seemed sharp but nothing to compare it with. Now I have both the Zeiss 35mm f1.4 and f2. I dream of buying the Leica f1.4 version but just can't bring myself to pulling the trigger, since the Zeiss are already paid for. Just letting you know... The awesome thing about film cameras, is that you can shoot full dynamic range color photos, and full dynamic range black and white on the same camera, because the only limit is the actual physical film, replaced with every roll. Nowadays digital equivalents require dedicated color and dedicated black and white sensor bodies, the latter being super expensive, because of being a niche product.

Just wondering, do modern film shooter take a dslr body with their film bodies? I really don't quite understand the appeal of film as a daily carry. I very much am amazed by home made b&w emulsions, especially glass plates, I understand the unique art, handiwork and tactile aspect of those. But I still wouldn't do it without first getting a series of digital shots to validate everything. Like some MF/LF polaroid backs did. Unless the phone is the digital replacement. I'm not bashing, I 'm just wondering, especially with Nikon and Canon whose vintage film lenses are the same mount or adapt natively to their dslr lineup.
@stillshootinginblackandwhite
@stillshootinginblackandwhite 8 месяцев назад
I don't. I have a Nikon film camera, and a bunch of Leica bodies. All my digital gear is Sony and I never use the lenses on the Sony with an adapter. When I went to Italy for a few weeks, I only took my phone, and two film cameras. My wife brought her digital camera but I didn't use it. I'm sure a lot of people do both, just not me. I'm kinda bored with digital although I use it for videoing these talks, and I shoot video underwater for other people's nature shows.

In my very amateur mind, I'd always assumed the core lens set to be 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm, with 85mm for portraits and 50mm for the main carry-around lens. I'd be interested in why you feel the 135mm is the better portrait lens, and even more interested in why the 50mm isn't even in your must-have list. I always thought the 50mm was considered the workhorse lens. Thanks, these videos are enjoyable and helpful.
@stillshootinginblackandwhite
@stillshootinginblackandwhite 8 месяцев назад
Well I do have a number of 50mm lens, but don't use one on the SLR that much. On my rangefinder I use them all the time but it's a different beast. Assuming you have to carry the gear with you all day, will limit what you would be willing to bring. (It's different if you're working in the studio and just have to walk over to the shelf to grab the next lens, you're not carrying it all day.) The 35mm, 50mm, 85mm are the core choices but there's not enough spread between them to carry all three. So the 35-85 combo is better. Or maybe you go with a 50mm and 105mm. If you do that then the 135mm is too close since you could just take three steps forward with a 105mm and be fine. If you carry all three, you still have to have something shorter and longer, so you'll end up hauling too much gear around all day. I use the 35mm in situations where others might use a 50mm, but I'm very comfortable working up close and in-the-face of people when shooting them. If I wasn't then likely I'd use the 50mm more. I even shoot portraits with the 24mm, which is really close. (Portraits, not head shots) I like the 135mm because it gives me more reach, isolates the subject from the background, and is a great working distance from the subject. This combo makes it great for portraits. The 105mm or 85mm are great too, but the 135mm just compresses more, and drops the background out more. Sometimes though the distance between the camera and the subject is too large as people might walk between you while shooting, or you have to back up to far and the area isn't big enough.

I am a portrait photographer and the 135 2.0 dc is a lens that will have to be pried from my cold dead fingers. I use it for headshots because it puts me at my preferred distance for facial compression, between 6 and 8'. I totally agree with the 35, 85, 135 spread. Now my 35 is a zeiss distagon with a focus throw from 5' to infinity of about 1/4 inch. I have a zeiss planar 85 manual focus but for run and gun an auto focus nikon 1.4. In studio, a zeiss 100 makro planar doubles as my film scanning lens. I have a F100, 5 and 6 all of which will do auto focus. I love the f6 for it's huge, bright, centered focus confirmation arrows/meatball for manual focusing. They all have motor drives and the matrix metering is dead on and combined with back button focusing, they act like my D850. Have actually got to a shot 3 times with the wrong film/digital camera they look so much alike. The f5 was designed by the italian designer who designed the DeLorean and masaratis and every digital nikon slr is nearly indistinguishable. That dial on top of digitals with iso/wb etc was the film rewind crank on the film bodies. Love the ability of the f6 to rewind automatically leaving out the leader. I can change film mid roll, mark it and reload it later one frame further down. Not as convenient as a film back, but it spares me carrying a second or third body.

@stillshootinginblackandwhite
@stillshootinginblackandwhite 8 месяцев назад
They added a few more pieces of Titanium to the body. There's an interesting article about the F3 on Nikon's site.... imaging.nikon.com/imaging/information/chronicle/history-f3/ Maybe that will help. In 1982, the titanium body Nikon F3/T was released. The first use of titanium for the camera body was in 1979, when titanium materials were used for the pentaprism cover, top cover and bottom cover of the Nikon F2 to increase their strength and corrosion resistance. A significantly more durable, robust titanium version of the F3HP was also offered, called the "F3/T", initially in a more natural titanium finish or 'champagne' coloring, and later in a less conspicuous black. It weighs 20 grams less than the comparable F3. The champagne offering was introduced in 1982 and was quickly discontinued around 1985, making it the rarer (and costlier on the used market) of the two titanium models. The F3/T featured titanium clad viewfinders (DE-4), titanium back, titanium top and bottom plates. It also benefited from the conformal coating of the internal circuit board. The mechanical specifications between the black finished F3/T and the natural finish F3/T were identical.

What do you think about pull twist manual zoom lenses?
@stillshootinginblackandwhite
@stillshootinginblackandwhite 8 месяцев назад
Well the first zooms were mostly like that. It was easier to focus because your hand was already on the ring, you didn't have to switch rings after zooming. I only had the old 80-200 f4 zoom that was a pull-twist. I don't think I ever got a sharp picture with it, but that was likely because of in-experience and the fact that the split image focus ring went dark because of the f4 lens.
