Super keen to share this with you!
And thanks to my mate for helping out building this extruder.
We had lots of fun extruding this first small piece and testing how the machine performs.
It was around 0°C, so things were not easy to heat up.
Super keen for the warmer weather and longer days to come around!
Thanks for tuning in !
Peace 😃

Heat your mold to molten plastic temperature before extrusion for easy removal. Spray the inner mold surface with mold release silicon spray for frictionless release. Run a continuous extrusion so that subsequent feed assists in pushing out the previous.
@ARTVENTUREFILMS
@ARTVENTUREFILMS Год назад
Your first point is to heat the molten plastic before extrusion, do you mean heat it before going in the mold? Molten plastic should be hot enough by itself or what do you mean? The spray sounds very interesting! I tried all kinds of lubricants before but not sure if i tried silicon. Any recommendations? Thanks four your input man!

One thing you can make is a "Deadblow Hammer". Any trade that installs windows needs one. Also automotive. It's a plastic hammer with a steel core. Sand weight at the head. I actually want to make the machines for this reason. The milk gallons plastic we get in the USA is perfect for this tool.

My .02 Cent, I have been watching a lot of these type of videos, I have yet to see anyone insulate the extruding tube, Fiberglass blanket or wrap. A tremendous amount of heat is being lost there and your heating elements are working more than they should. Also maybe place a couple of the heating element clamps on the long molds to keep the plastic more fluid. Great Start...

Hello, so I am from Mali. And in an effort to fight plastic waste I make plastic pavers out of plastic waste waste. And now I’m planning to building a plastic extruder that is cost effective but haven’t got a clue how. Your video is amazing btw
@ARTVENTUREFILMS
@ARTVENTUREFILMS 3 года назад
Hey Amara, thank you so much! Sorry for my late reply by the way. Your idea sounds awesome! Making Pavers is a good idea when you want to turn around a lot of plastic waste. And they don't have to be totally clean either (which takes less work). However, I'm not sure if you can build a cheap extruder and get the results you would want. My setup works really well for putting in a lot of plastic. When the opening at the front is big enough, there's quite a bit coming through. I tried to make mine as cheap as possible and here is what it cost (if i remember correctly): - Extrusion barell and screw - around 250€ - Heating elements with electric box - 300€ - A coupling - maybe 50€ - An electric Motor - Mine was 600 but it is overpowered for an extruder because I've bought it for the shredder. Maybe you can try and find a used electric motor with similar specs? That would be a start to make things cheaper. Check out the video from precious plastic, they're using a wood drill as a screw and you could go with a steel pipe for the barell. You could get the heating elements for cheap online and build it together yourself or ask someone that knows electric stuff :) Hope that helps 😃

i use to work for a plastics company, injected and rotational, your extruder die needs to be much shorter, polish the insides if there not already, a release agent would help and a roller table to receve the post after the die, we use to make welding fillament. basicly after the die head you draw the wire though a trough of water to cool then onto a spool and wind it up thus draging though the water. making 1.0mm and bigger. great to see this becoming a home hoby tech like 3d printing... ;)

What is the die of an extruder? I'm a little lost here. I'm not super keen on making 3D filament because it's so tough. I would love to get a penny board mold or something like that.
@TrailingThroughLife
@TrailingThroughLife 2 года назад
Deck board and plastic bricks would be great implements. A thick round flange w/6 bolts to connect the die to the extruder end would help seal between but the excess pouring out of the connection is normal. You could have a pin size hole ground in between to direct this overflow downward. A pressure sensor before the extruder end to monitor high pressure. Molten plastic under pressure and spray and leave deep scaring burns. Not to mention fire safety. The die itself could be shorter but an additional lower temperature heating element would help it flow out. Once out of the die air or water cooling would help keep its shape and leave it with a nice finish.

If you add heat zones to the tubes for those extrusions it will flow quicker and be way more solid when done. You can even run continuous. Add water bath after the tube. Also make the tube shorter for sure to run constant.

I know what you have in mind. I tried to go in that direction but it didn't work. I will post an update video on those extruder tests soon. I think for this extrusion you are talking about you would need machines that are a lot bigger and that run for a whole day. It's kind of like making 3D filament right? you cool the extrusion right when it comes out and you end up with and endless beam. That was also what i was hoping for. But is definitely hard to achieve. You'll see in the next video :)

If I had an extruder , I would produce some filament for 3D printing. A long time ago, I produced molds. As long you have round shapes with the same center, molding is not so difficult. Just onbe maxchine, a lathe, is needed. The performance of your extruder is good for small molds. When you produce beams, the fronter tip will be hardened long before the end is reached. For beams, thats possible, for molds, it`s nessecary, that the whole mold is filled, before one part of the material begins to harden.

4x4 (90mm X 90mm) beam replacement for home building. Plastic is a little be weaker than wood, from my understanding, so by making 4x4's you could build anything. I am personally thing of a patio frame and then toping that frame with a plastic sheet thick enough to hold roofing tar. In this way the plastic is immune to any water damage and the tar will protect the plastic from the sun.

Awesome build. But why the hell is nobody using an extruder screen for filtering the molten polymers?! Every normal sized extruder or blow molding machine has it. It has to be Installed before the nozzle after the hottest heating stage and obviously after the screw. In normal operation when the temperature is too low / rpm of screw is too high the resulting shear stress will cause lokal degradation ("burning") of the polymer. These impurities will be filtered out be the installed screen. Screen size depends on melt flow index of the used polymere and can be found in vendor documentation (to build ur own). BTW: Extruding long objects without heating the mold or lubricants will always cause the extruded part to look ugly at the end. As its growing while extruding so is the force growing needed to push the bar through the mold. That again leads to burning or damage of the screw / motor. You should just use a big nozzle shaped as desired for such shapes and active cooling the extruded (endless) part. Happy extruding =)
@ARTVENTUREFILMS
@ARTVENTUREFILMS 2 года назад
Hey there! Sorry for the late reply. I don't really know why no one is using a screen to filter the molten plastic. Sounds very plausible though. I'm not an expert. @joemulkerins5250

Don' need a filtering screen (a filter) for extrusions so big as this. All of the contaminants will just be trapped in the mixture. That is the joy of it. Throw any old shite into it and it will still be strong.
@joemulkerins5250

Good Day, I have a design and wonder if you can help. It would be beneficial for both. it could be produced all over. I just wonder if you can make a plastic block 8" thick by 26" L and 14" H so I can shape it into my design , get it approved and patent it and then mass produced it. If you can, tell me how much will be and shipped to Georgia USA. Thanks Julio

What kind of shape though?
@IraQNid
@IraQNid 2 года назад
Are you able to come up with a desktop extruder that functions like a solid ink printer for depositing precisely controlled melted dots of plastic onto a page. But then using that process as the basis for a full CMYKW 3D extrusion printer. Use "raw/virgin" plastic pellets or recycled pellets to make these new shapes. Because it is more like a traditional printer you'd be able to lay down much more material than squeezing it through a small heated tip like a normal hobbyist level 3D printer. The other thing that would be of tremendous benefit is to make a desktop vinyl sheet extrusion / printer. In essence the same idea as above but for the fabrication and application of custom-made vinyl in the shape desired. No more trimming, weeding, or waste. Potentially faster production times, overall cheaper, only need to get the raw materials. Add other properties to each batch as you would swap filaments for infused wood, metals, rubber, etc. It would be a revolution to the application of vinyl decoration and sign making.
@ARTVENTUREFILMS
@ARTVENTUREFILMS 2 года назад
Your ideas sound crazy, but I'm not sure if i get what you mean. CMYKW printing sounds awesome but how am I supposed to pull that off? Same with the vinyl, how do you think to make a vinyl sheet extrusion? I've never seen any vinyl in my plastic waste. Thanks for your ideas nonetheless!
@IraQNid
@IraQNid 2 года назад
Crazy ideas are how society moves forward. Look at 3D printing itself because no so long ago it was a revolutionary crazy idea. So I've been watching tutorials of how vinyl is used to decorate all kinds of things. It always uses thin sheets that are cut by hand or machine into a flat shape and then the unwanted areas are picked out during the weeding and trimming process. This weeding stage is bad on the eyes and body over time. The vinyl that isn't used for a project is thrown away. Extremely wasteful process. Watching how Siser makes their vinyl their videos depict it in pellet / raw form whereby it is fed into a hopped and runs through an extruder. Watching videos of how vinyl records are made and they too use raw plastic pellets that are fed into a hopper and fed through an extruder to get the desired shape. Vinyl is described as having a rubbery gel-like quality once heated. 3D filament resin also comes in pellet form, is fed into a hopper, then run through an extruder to produce the shape desired. Usually as a thin string of plastic material but there is no reason it cannot be made into other shapes. This was the basis of my idea. By blending ideas of the desired outcome to create a "desktop" sized machine that can fabricate sheets of vinyl on-demand in the desired finished shape people would be able to eliminate the weeding and trimming process of decorating garments, signs, etc. Add the flexibility to precisely control the deposition of the vinyl like is done with solid ink printers means a page printer of vinyl working at much faster speeds as opposed to squeezing out a thin filament onto a heated plate to slowly build it up one layer at a time. While laying down precisely printed full color Cyan Magenta Yellow Black White in the desired shape one page sized layer for each pass you could layer those as well to create a much faster full color 3D extrusion vinyl printer. As to how you achieve that? This is why I asked if you can do it. I posed this question to several other engineers who use and build 3D printers, to Siser itself in the hopes this idea would get traction. Melted plastic and vinyl will conform to whatever shape it is forced through or molded as. Liquid resin 3D printers use a laser or high resolution LCD mask to produce each thin sheet of material layer by layer. But that process is a bit more involved requiring cleaning, UV curing, and sometimes post production treatments. It also tends to be a single color for the entire build.

@@IraQNid Seems like you've been in the topic for a while. Sounds like a good concept too. For me to pull this off would take a lifetime though. I'm not an engineer and if I'm not fully hooked by an idea, it's hard to put so much effort into a project. This seems to be directed in the shirt printing industry and they would definitely benefit from such an idea. It's not really what i would like to get into though. Thanks for your explanation. I hope you'll find someone that is keen on trying it out. Different question though, why aren't you trying it out yourself?

Not sure. If you can deliver high quality plastic flakes, that's probably something people who have machines would buy. If you sell molten plastic, it always depends on the shape and color. I guess it depends on what shape your molten plastic has.
