1930's Bandsaw restoration Part 5
This stand will follow the Art Deco look of the band saw. The wood will be "fumed" (with ammonia) white oak which will turn the wood a deep rich brown.

White oak is such a nice wood to start with, to have it Quarter sawn is out of this world if you ask me. Very nice cabinet. Top notch craftsmanship, it is a pleasure to behold. Cheers

Thanks 👍 I totally agree with you assessment of white oak, it's an amazing wood. I have a friend that trims tree and he cut the tree down at a neighbors house. He then delivered it to a saw mill run by an Amish family and then I dried it in the back yard. That was at lest 15 years ago. The tree was 32 inches at the large end and it took me 6 trips to the saw mill to get half of it home. The other half the tree trimmer kept. A few years ago the tree trimmer asked me if I wanted the white oak and he gave it to me. I probably have 130 bf left. I've done the same with a red oak and poplar. It nice having an abundance but the white oak is the best!

Very nice work as usual. The splined dowels serve another purpose. Found out early if your using good bradpoint drills for the dowel holes. You can split the wood hammering the dowels in place. They will act like pistons and build pressure and can split the wood from the excessive pressure. The glue acts like a hydraulic fluid. The splines let the glue escape and not build pressure. Tig welding is very nice except for the amount of heat that builds welding slowly. And will cause extra warping. It's always fun trying to straighten things after.
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop 6 месяцев назад
Thanks! Dowels will definitely split the wood. The dowel I used are a bit too loose but better than too tight. I should probably drill a bit more shallow like an 1/8" more than half the dowel. That way you force some of the glue around the dowel. In this application it will likely be fine. I agree, TIG heats things up more but I've had the same problems with MIG. The warp I had was only 3/16" maybe. It straightened out near perfect. I have much better success with TIG than MIG which apparently is opposite what most people experience. I love TIG.... for me it's easy to get a fairly good weld. Thanks for the comment.

This project is coming along really nice. I like to use carriage bolts for leveling. Put the head down on the ground. That nice round dome head won’t dig into the concrete and damage it. Look forward to the next video.

Good progress. When I rout flutes I also often get burning at the end. I can minimize the burning by making a final pass with a very shallow depth of cut like 1/64th in. Good to have the mask and filters for the ammonia fumes. When I read about some car manufacturers testing burning ammonia as fuel, I dread to think of what happens if the ammonia tank or fuel lines develop a leak. These cars will likely use anhydrous ammonia. A tiny leak will mean a LOT of fumes. Dave.
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop 6 месяцев назад
Never heard of the cars but yeah, that would be bad. I probably should have done as you suggested with the router. I was worried about getting the all at eht same depth. Thanks

Yes, tig welding is one of my favorites. I've been tig welding for over 40 years. Mostly used it for stainless, monel,inconel,aluminum bronze, and aluminum. But when you're welding for someone else, they want the jobs done in a short time. Now I try using flux core wire to save on buying shielding gas. Prices are going crazy for everything. Buying good wire cuts down on the splatter. And you need to run with a short stick out. Found that harbor freight wire splatters more.
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop 6 месяцев назад
If I was working in a production environment where time was an issue I'm have a MIG welder. Also, I'm not as steady as I used to be and TIG is much more forgiving. MIG is like trying to paint trim with a 4" brush... ha. My TIG gas is fairly cheap. I think I paid 35 to exchange the tank last time. I used to use AirGas and they were at least double the price. Of course buying the tanks is terribly high from whoever.
@berniejanssen2863
@berniejanssen2863 6 месяцев назад
@WinkysWorkshop I'm retired now and can't see paying so much for the gas. Here it cost $35 for the really small bottle. 40cu
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop 6 месяцев назад
@@berniejanssen2863 I understand. Mine is a 60 cuft and about that price. It lasts a long time. Usually about 3 month but it depends on what I get into. Flux core on MIG actually welds fairly clean so I might do the same. Especially with s 120 v welder.

The grooves in the dowels also help prevent hydrolock so the wood won't split.

Great looking base for that band saw. Does the fumming process raise the grain of the wood?
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop 6 месяцев назад
Maybe very slightly but not hardly noticeable. I think its humidity and not the ammonia. The cool part is, the fuming is at least 1/16" deep in the wood so you can sand it as needed (also I did not need to).

Mark it is really looking good. Nice job of re-purposing the bearings. I seriously would like to know more about the mask/respirator you are using.
