----------------------
The duration of the video is much longer than I expected even though I have omitted much footage, like the different layers of paint and some of the self-explanatory assembling processes. This is my first try at an ABS/hard plastic body, and the proces itself was time consuming. So for those really interested in the Tamiya Monster Beetle, make yourself a good cup of coffee and follow along for the 13 minutes. For those not so interested, please feel free to skip this video or jump to the parts that interest you the most. Below you will find some links to the different parts of the video.
This Monster Beetle was a welcomed gift for me on Christmas Eve 2015. So I am quite pleased at presenting the footage from the build proces for the holidays of 2016. Hope you will enjoy.
Part A: Quick unboxing and box art presentation 0:40
- watch the whole unboxing here: • UNBOXiNG the Tamiya Mo...
Part B: Painting the body: Preperations and priming 1:49
- I was quite unsure of whether to prime it or not. Decided on the priming as this probably would bring out the red colour better? The disadvantage is that scrathes will reveal grey paint instead of red plastic.
Part C: Painting the body: Italian Red and details 4:13
- Even though I had bought a 1500P sand paper to be used after painting it I deciced in the last minutes not to do it. I had no good result with the clear coat (TS-13) as it reacted somehow with the paint, blurring some details. Since this footage I have corrected some of those details at windows etc.
Part D: Painting the Driver ("Albert Attaboy") 6:24
- Very simple paint job! I do not master any weathering techniques. But Albert awoke nontheless!
Part E: Assembling the body: Windows and Front assembly (nose and light bar) 8:24
- Strange things occurred. The assembly of the light bar is still a mystery to me. What went wrong? Pieces do not seem to match.
Part F: Assembling the body: Details, Decals and Final Result 11:09
- Quite enjoyable proces. Learned a great technique to apply decals from the youtube channel of Sigbarth RC. Much easier! I'm happy to pass it on here.
Currently I am waiting for some final details and changes (plus better weather) before I run it outside. Something I am looking forward to in the next season. The Monster Beetle is truely visual striking, a real beauty and one of my new favorites. When it comes to running capabilities it is also still filled with flaws. Some of the changes Tamiya made has actually caused new problems. A few of them I hope to correct a little in the future. Many more Monster Beetle videos to come. This is gonna be a journey. Hope you will travel along with me.

I can't wait to see this run. I think Monster Beetle has the all time classic driving characteristics. So crazy to watch it run. That finish is really something though. :o And great editing/music with the painting the figure part. I don't know if you meant to, but that got weirdly introspective for a minute. :D
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 7 лет назад
+True Buggy Yeah, looking forward running it. Waiting for the new diff and a solution for the axles but after that it will see some run time. I have fun with my WT-01's (which is like a ''modern old-fashioned Tamiya Monster Truck") so running a real classic like this will be great and visual appealing. Looking forward to 2017. Well, I think Albert needed some introspective peace and quiet while 'waking up' :-) Thanks for watching and I'm glad you're TT-02B build series is up and running again :-)

Great vid! I see a few tips you used that I never would have thought to do such as taping off the window trim and pinstripe to ensure a straight crisp line and to cut the tip of the backing off the decal so you get perfect alignment. I'm using these. Just got the rerelease last week and am looking for livery inspirations on line. Thanks for posting!

Nice job ! I've done quite a few RC bodies and I've never done the thing where you cut a bit off the backing of the sticker so it's easier to get the position right. I just peel the whole lot off which can make it tricky with a big sticker. I can see the benefit of cutting off a small bit first having watched this so thanks !
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 7 лет назад

What a comprehensive paint and build video - you really showed what needs to be done, I like your attention to detail - it certainly takes patience. Super job with the box art - I know I did my own take with my beetle shells but I'm still a big fan of the classic Tamiya look - especially when it's executed so well.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 6 лет назад
Mark Bryan RC Thanks Mark! Loved doing that body, although it took some time. You really got an eye for details as well. I think the box art really comes down to this: It would be very boring if everybody did the box art, but it would also be a shame if nobody ever did it :-) So thanks to creative minds and work like yours I can take on the easy and non-risky road :-)

About to order this kit myself and this video is perfect to ensure a good paint job. Would you still recommend the grey primer before the italian red? And what are your thoughts now on the clear coat at the end? Awesome work!
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 5 лет назад
Thanks! Hope it will be useful. And Noooo, I do not recommend any of them! :-) If I where to do it again I would definitely skip the grey primer. I think the red will stick fine to the body (if you sand the plastic very gentle) and the red will be brighter. One could always use a white primer, but all the primer has done for me is that when it gets scratched the scratch will show up much clearer, because it will expose the grey. I guess one could use the clear coat still, it gives a good shine, but be very careful with the clear coat, thin thin thin layers and a lot of patience or it will ruin the paint underneath.

Absolutely loved this vid great editing job mate! I was actually wanting to get this buggy but didnt know you also had to paint and glue the body so now im not too sure, as I love building the kits only haha Anyway you have me hooked on your channel. Subbed!
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 5 лет назад
Thanks a lot for the nice feedback and the sub, Emille! Welcome on board. Yeah, with these models with hard bodies most of the build time is spend on the body. Sanding down, painting, gluing, sanding down, more paint, painting details and driver, coating, stickers etc etc. Only a fraction of the build time is spend on the actual car :-) And usually the body gets scratched up on the first run, he he. The models with polycarbonate bodies are easier, but Tamiya actually also do special re-release ltd. edition kit versions with pre-painted and pre-cut polycarbonate bodies. Usually it only involves painting the driver and applying the decals.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 5 лет назад
Ohh, and I forgot: painting etc. is optional. You can actually do this kit just using the bare red plastic, applying the decals. It won't look too great, but from a far and as a runner it will do the trick :-)
@emi7126
@emi7126 5 лет назад
No worries, I've just started to get into the hobby again and you've fired me up! I can see the amount of work that went into it is incredible and obviously the results are outstanding. Yeah ok, that's why I was wondering why you were painting it when it was already painted lol thnx for the tip I'll be getting this cheers! 👍
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 5 лет назад
Welcome back to the hobby! When I re-entered the hobby my first kit was the Tamiya Rising Fighter and I didn't paint it. Just slapped on the decals. Building the actual car was the most important. And it was great :-)

Very good step by step assembly instructions. Bought the kit yesterday and about to start building. So I'm going to skip the grey primer like what you said, but do I still have to sand the whole body before applying the red paint, what if I don't?
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 5 лет назад
Thanks! Not sure if I would call it instructions, more of a ‘first hard body I ever did’ 🙂 Paint will stick better to a sanded body, and even better with primer too, but I have seen many just paint it directly. I could be tempted to try it if it’s for a runner that’s gonna get scratched quickly anyway 🙂

Hi Stuart! Uhh, been too long since I did this and a hard body in general. I remember I just tried different ones. But start high ... I also remember I did a Grasshopper hard body once where I picked too rough sand paper which the paint didn’t cover.

@NordicRC
@NordicRC 5 лет назад
Thank you, Guillermo! Since this is a runner and if I where to do it again I would probably leave the primer put, since in case of scratches red plastic would show less than white or grey paint.

@DC_Cha_Cha_Cha
@DC_Cha_Cha_Cha 7 лет назад
Can you use regular sandpaper for rubbing the body down? The sort of thing you'd get from a DIY store (fine too, like 800 rating?)
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 7 лет назад
Paul Lovell I'm no expert but I just did a body which got too deep scratches to hide. I ran out of Tamiya Primer and even 5-6 coats of normal Tamiya TS paint, including sanding with a 1500 between layers couldn't hide the scratches. So if you're using 800 in the beginning I suggest you use some genuine Tamiya primer too, several light coats with some mild sanding with 1500 in between the coats, before the 'real' paint job. But I haven't done many hard bodies myself so I am no expert. Just trying things out and learning along the road :-)
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 7 лет назад
Ohh, and yes, I don't think the brand of sandpaper matters with the rough job of sanding down in the beginning. I just use whatever I have at hand. But I suggest a Tamiya 1500 in between coats for the small imperfections.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 7 лет назад
... and by the way. If it's a runner, and no shelf queen, I've seen good paint jobs with no sandpaper or primer. Just a thorough wash and 2-4 coats of paint. When I ran this Monster Beetle for the first time it didn't take me more than a couple of minutes to scratch the body :-)

@CarminesRCTipsandTricks 7 лет назад
Tick Tock - I use it all the time on ABS bodies (that don't have fine details - like small scale models). Expoxy Paint is awesome, durable, and just flexible enough not to crack. The finish is like wet glass!! (which is why I put it in a clean plastic Tote with the cover on loosely, for up to 3 days, to prevent dust, or worse FINGERPRINTS from getting on the paint. It's only downside - LOOONG curing time - if you get the good stuff! ~ Carmine

One important advice for those, who want to have a YELLOW Beetle body => Take the WHITE Tamiya Primer (and 3 cans of yellow spraypaint) !!! Don´t use the light grey Tamiya primer spray, that I bought...That way you will have a perfect white driver suit and helmet. If you use a brush and Revell white paint, the helmet becomes a mess and the driver suit looses its texture/details.
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 6 лет назад
Sounds like a good advice :-)
@19Marc79
@19Marc79 6 лет назад
I would also advise to fill the body mount holes completely, sandpaper and then paint the body nicely, so that you can have a scale body without any body mount holes and clips in the end. You can hold the body with DIY velcro-mount from the inside (use a BIG surface for the front, so that forces will be evenly dispersed). Then your body will not suffer from the predetermined breaking points at the 3 pinholes. In case of a roll-over crash, the velcro will just slide away and the body will not break as quickly as it was intended by Tamiya...By the way: Flip the rear shocks 180 degrees and monut them directly to the A-Chassis Frame. The black rear suspension stays are 100% superfluent. Throw them away right from the start, so that you don´t have to order them as spare parts in the future ;_)

Marc Flipsen That's a good tip. I just tried doing some details of a Tamiya driver with a Tamiya paint marker. Not a succes. Maybe I should try your trick next :-)

That's the problem with Tamiya, you spend all that time and effort building them and can be all undone with one role over lol lovely to display though.

Ha ha, yeah, if you saw my first run with this one, that's exactly what happened. One roll over and giant roof rash on the paint :-) But well, love building these, have no room for both a runner and a shelf queen at the same time of all my models, and I can't not run them :-)

Been too long since I did this one so Zi cannot remember if it isn’t shown in the video. But check the video. I think at least the rattle cans’ numbers are shown in it?

I used to have one as a kid in the early 90s, I absolutely loved it then one day it was gone my sister gave it to her dickhead boyfriend and I'm still mad about it today.

Luckily you can buy a re-release today. And hide it away when your sister visits. Oh man, that memory sounds like a hard one. I can imagine if my sister gave away my RCs. I would probably still be upset about it. Hope you had some fun with it and have some good memories too before she gave it away.

8:26 Never trust a driver with that look in their eyes. Poor sucker must've lost his eyebrows in the last car he totaled.

8:06 Are we not going to talk about the elephant in the room?! What message is Tamiya sending our future drivers when they mold their fake race drivers grabbing the wheel at 9 and 3??? Madness! #10and2 /s
