The Titan is a .60 cubic inch or nearly 10cc model aircraft glow plug engine designed for methanol based fuel. The kit comprises several aluminium castings and bar stock. It was designed as a final year project for engineering students and was put together by George Genevro, a professor of Industrial Technology and supplied to me by Roger Taylor from California USA. Join me in a journey to machine this engine. In this first episode I detail the components of the kit and make a start on machining the crankshaft from a single piece of 1018 steel bar stock.

Excellent! I’m embarrassed to be one of the people who turned down this project. I really wanted to do it, but my project backlog is already large enough to kill a small bear if it topples. So glad it found a good home! Roger is a great guy (I met him at the Bash as well) and I love how you’re tackling the project. I’m learning a lot.

I convinced a woodshop student of mine to machine an engine in his other class. Everything from scratch. He wanting something more challenging and interesting. The teacher knew nothing about model engines (he was a bit of an ass). I supplied the drawings. He did a very good job. When I tried to start it we could not. We tried and tried. After an hour he left. Later I tried again. Hit it with the starter and wham - it ran like a top. I had plugged my starter in backwards and the engine was running backwards! Then it hit me. I took it apart and sure enough the crank Venturi was off by 90 degrees counter clockwise. The timing was off. He was a terrific kid.

Hi Mark, The hole in the crankpin is to promote air fuel flow through the crank bushing to lubricate the thrust face and the bushing, Positive crankcase pressure will eventually come out behind the prop driving “washer” An excellent job so far, looking forward to the next episode. Regards
@Preso58
@Preso58 3 года назад
Thanks for that. I hadn't considered the lubrication of the internal components. It's interesting that the prop is actually pulling the crankshaft forward against the thrust face of the crank disk. I try to mention this in the next instalment. Regards, Mark

@@Preso58 Hi, End float and clearances are important in these engines. If this was going to be used in anger for extended periods, additional thought as to the lubrication would be required but as it will be a display piece I would suggest you make a note that it not be over stressed if ever used. Mark, as a kid growing up in the states, I built many U-Control (60 ft or 18.29 meter) control line model airplanes. I had a McCoy .60 Red Head engine.that powered many of my creations. I was the envy of my neighborhood. I built and flew some wild models. I concentrated on speed and aerobatics. I had ZERO appreciation of the engineering detail that goes into making your engine. I am so impressed with this project. I look forward to the day it runs.

Rex, as creepy as it sounds, I am now seeing recommendations for all sorts of videos to do with old glow plug engines on RU-vid. Just today I saw one reference to the McCoy Red Head engine. I think the biggest engine I had as a kid was 5cc. However I was given a 4 stroke .60 motor a few years ago and the same donor gave me the plans and balsa wood to make a very large RC aircraft which flew a total of one time! Part of the wreckage is still under my house. I think I formed the view that I was better off making engines than trying to fly them. Regards, Mark

I may be watching this backwards but I am sure enjoying it. I worked for 15 years as a machinist making ships engines and pipe line compressors. That and time as a naval machinist in the Canadian Navy. Retired now and pouring silver to maintain my sanity I have no real machine shop tools aside from a lot of well cared for files, a bench top drill press and various hand drills and a small lathe (a 1950 3 speed, belt drive) with a bunch of tooling that gets me by for most things. This looks like a fun build. Good to see you after a good long time eh.

He was Electronics Engineer there. He studied at Cornell in Ithaca, New York and had a PHd in Electronic Engineering and a teaching degree. And even better....when I was in grade 1-6 school, I walked right past the original COX manufacturing plant, twice a day...it was a pretty old grimy place, maybe 50 X 60 foot building, but it was a start for them! And yes, every kid I knew had a COX .049...! I think they cost about $3...a couple months allowance for me. For those with less money, there was the .020.....

That engine design is from the 1940's-1950's. By the 1960's most model aircraft engines had the exhaust port on the right side. That way the crankshaft rotation would assist in sweeping the air/fuel charge up into the bypass and into the cylinder. You properly identified the glo-plug tap as 1/4"-32, a little finer than what might be mistaken as the more common 1/4"-28. Many heads have been ruined when modelers tried to clean up the threads with the wrong tap. The counterbalance and cutaways on the crankshaft have to not only balance the crank pin, but the mass of the lower end of the connecting rod, just as on locomotives, as well as the reciprocating weight of the upper end of the rod and piston. And to think they used to figure that out with a slide rule! This will be a fun project to watch.

@Preso58 3 года назад
The drilling of the port comes fairly late in the build. The main crankshaft bush has to be pressed in and the venturi drilled. Surprisingly, the notes aren't too specific about the angular orientation of the hole. It just says to position the crankpin adjacent to one of the mounting holes in the rear cover and then to mark the crankshaft with a scriber poked through the venturi! Regards, Mark

I love seeing old school machine work. the way I learned in High school, on an old South Bend lathe and Bridgeport mill. the school shop only had one lathe with a DRO and one mill with a DRO. they upgraded one of the mills to a CNC the year after I graduated. I also worked after school for the shop teacher as an apprentice teaching adults the basics of machining, mainly as a gopher and answering simple questions and in his personal shop rebuilding hydraulic cylinders, basic welding, and rebuilding automotive engines and other odd jobs.

Hi Mark. I'm John from Florida in the US. Google thought I would be interested in your' channel. I guess because I occasionally check out machining videos. I am a retired Tool and Die and porotype tool maker. At the end of WW2 my father came home from the Army with a passion for U control model airplanes. Him and I flew almost every Sunday at a local Base Ball park (you can't do that any more) along with about four or five other enthusiasts. I had an Ohlson 60 engine much like the one you are building. At first we needed ignition. Then they invented the Glow Plug. That was a big improvement over Ignition. It did away with Battery, spark plug, Points, Condensers and ignition timing. I used to take the remanences of my fathers crashed planes and build one of my own design. We couldn't afford to supply two pilots with airplane kits. I finally acquired a pilots license in 1958. I ended up building the full sized airplane in my thumb nail picture for my flying pleasure. All that boils down to I always wanted to build an engine like you are doing when I was working in the shop. Sadly I did not. I still have a few of the old engines stashed away somewhere and a 36 inch WS Corsair hanging on my living room wall. Sorry this is so long. Thought you would find it interesting. John

Very cool project... I was unaware that somebody was making machinist kits for those vintage engines. I say vintage because those were quite old and used on free flight models and line control. Now I have the machines, but it's 50+ years later. I have no want to...so I'm glad you are doing this so I don't have to. Lot's of fiddly stuff. I don't do fiddly stuff as well as I used to. I'm glad you do fiddly stuff well. Good luck. I'll watch on the side.

Apparently, there is a secret society of former aero modellers out there who are reliving their childhood memories and this build has generated a lot of love. I hope it works out and that it will actually start and run. No pressure, right? Regards, Mark

You're a lucky man. At high school I never had a turn on the metal lathe. It could only be one student per week and the teacher had a few favourites so I missed out. Have always regretted it as I would love to turn something.. anything. I often think I should go back and demand my turn, even though I am now 73. I had a magic engine - an Enya 29 3B Super Typhoon. It out performed Ron De'Chastel's imported engine in the QLD 5cc team race championship.

This is going to be very interesting. For me (being a aeromodeller many years ago - still have a couple of motors ,OS, Merco, Rossi - and small time hobby machinist I will follow with interest. I think this I an advanced machining project. Thankyou for sharing. ( I like your technique for information sharing)

It seems that this project has drawn a lot of former aero modellers out of the closet so to speak. Certainly the nostalgia factor is very high. I too have very fond memories of flying control line aircraft and the all too common sight of a finely crafted model voiding the ground contact warranty! Regards, Mark

My father used to be big into RC airplanes and helicopters and have a bunch of nitro engines lying around. They're a lot of fun to play with. The neatest one is a rotary engine
@Preso58
@Preso58 3 года назад
I recall a number of articles in the Aeromodeller magazine when the Wankel Rotary came out. One of the selling points was that you could hold the engine in one hand while it was running. It was supposed to be as smooth as butter. Regards, Mark

Beautiful work Mark, like many other subscribers I'm really looking forward to how this comes together and whether you can do what so many haven't been able to achieve, make it run. What an honor it would be to have a Hand Made piece made by yourself in the Joe Martin Museum, no pressure though. Cam
@Preso58
@Preso58 3 года назад
Believe me, the pressure is real. It also seems that there is a huge amount of love out there for nitro engines and model aircraft. I am guessing that anyone watching channels like ours also messed about with model aircraft as kids. Regards, Mark

George submitted a full set of plans in the "Home Shop Machinist" ( I forget the year and month, but can dig around for them) for this engine to be built from scratch..I built on and it ran like a top. The only change I made was I used a commercial carburetor with a spool throttle Instead of his venture carb. I have a couple hours run time on it on the bench so far.
@Preso58

I believe the notes that came with the kit are the original articles serialised in the Home Shop Machinist. Roger Taylor has approached the editor of Home Shop Machinist to secure digital copies of the original articles for those that may want them. Regards, Mark

Chris, I will be making some prints available for a similar engine designed by George Genevro. It is called the Crusader 60 and it can be built entirely from billet and bar stock. Evidently, there are no more kits available for the Titan so the Crusader would be a better option if you want to build something of this size. Regards, Mark

Gday Preso, I can say already this is going to be a fantastic series to follow, I have no doubt it will run like a clock when it’s all done, I wish I had the skill to tackle a project like this but the would be a pile of shit on the corner of the bench that would block the sun out I’m afraid, really enjoyed watching mate, have a great weekend, Cheers
@Preso58
@Preso58 3 года назад
Matty, I am sure you would have no difficulty with something like this. It is actually considered to be a beginners engine due to it's size. All the parts are "industrial grade". I am thinking the only really serious metrology is going to be in the fit between the piston and the cylinder liner. The notes call for 1 to 2 microns which to me seems to be Robin Renzetti territory. Regards, Preso

Hello again. I'm very excited to see this through. You face some challenges outside of the lathe. A bit of Gearhead is needed in calculating the timing and fuel mixtures. My world is the Oscilloscope and Transistors, but I have a few Fox, Mccoy, Enya and K&B engines not using a throttle valve, only the needle to adjust fuel flow. Timing is everything. Fuel is science too. Break-in and lube mixtures, ect. This is going to be good. Count me in on every installment. Good Luck!
