Ranger also participated in raids on German shipping off Norway in 1944. And she was twice erroneously reported sunk by the Germans. I have a newspaper article reporting one such erroneous sinking by the U-404. Sadly, Ranger was sunk for target practice after the war.

Amazing work as always Andy !! The only thing that you should modified a bit is the deck I think. It looks too much clean, there's no wear on the surface while the repeated passages of the planes should damage it. You have added rust to the sides so I guess the idea was to age it a little so why not age the deck also? :)

Hey Andy, I am a Moderate LD Special Education Teacher in the Watertown Massachusetts Public School System. I want to let you know that 7 students in my school love watching your kit builds. 3 times a week I host a 'lunch bunch' for these students who have a hard time socializing with their classmates in the school cafeteria. Instead we build models, while we watch your videos for guidance and inspiration. You are the Bob Ross of scale modeling. So I wanted to say thank you for helping these students learn the importance of teamwork, following directions, applying arithmetic, making historical connections and most importantly the confidence that comes from a job well done. 121 pounds in the UK which seems like good value. Scale 350 looks like a good compromise giving a reasonable size to the small parts while not having too big a model overall. Aircraft do not look in scale otherwise looks good.

Spaghetti decals.....pool up the decal area with water, and "float" the spaghetti decal on it. It will straighten out naturally. Use a dry brush to pull the excess water once you've got it into position. Still have to mess with it, but you can get it flat on the deck by pooling water. I build trumpeter model ships all the time and I know all about those &U*^( decals lol!

Both Rangers have ended up being scrapped... ex-CV-61 is currently being scrapped in Brownsville where her sister ships were also dismantled or are in the process of being dismantled. The USS Langley CV-1 has an interesting sidenote. Her sister ships, ALL colliers of the Proteus class met with tragic fates. One was sunk in foreign service during World War II. The other two, Proteus and Cyclops, are linked to the Bermuda Triangle mystery but it's thought that Cyclops actually sank far closer to the east coast of the US. There was a Navy diver who chanced upon a wreck in the late 1960s that had the same configuration as the Proteus-class ships and it was most likely the Cyclops in that case from what they know about the last sighting and position of that ship...

When I built Trumpeters 1/350th U.S.S.Hornet I removed the molded in hanger deck doors,added a Eduard hanger deck detail set,rigged up 3 Red(dimmed)led lights. More F6F,SBD A/C and pre painted crew figures..Tom's modelworks p/e set allowed a good deal of details on the inside walls..Have to look close but,the effect was worth the effort.

Thanks for this review it was very helpful in deciding to purchase this release. I am curious on your thoughts about the decals and version of the ship. It appears to be the Ranger as it would appear in 1944 since it has the 33-1A dazzle camouflage scheme, but the decals for the aircraft are for 1942-early 43, Do you know if its configuration (Anti-Aircraft fit, boats, Radar, etc.) reflects 1944 as well or some other timeframe in its history?

Acetone-based paint? That sounds like insanity. Acetone is one of the key ingredients in your extra thin cement. Just thinking about putting that kind of stuff on plastic gives me the shivers.
@leodoz1016

Tsorovan Zero i think the acetone is there to bite in to the plastic more, like Andy said in the video. And not in such amounts that it will melt or deform the plastic, i think
@tonimg9193
@tonimg9193 7 лет назад
Enamel paint solvent is acetone derived and I painted countless models with paint diluted with it. Superb bite and finish, but you can't remove it from your model after painting without ruining it and if you spill some solvent into your model you're likely destroying it. That's the bad side of it, but well handled is totally fine to use into your stirene model. Bear one thing in mind: TOXICITY is a real concern, keep your room well vented and preferably wear safety googles and air filtering mask and you are good to go.
@chemech
@chemech 7 лет назад
Back in the 1960s and 70s (my childhood), we used enamel paints which were thinned with mineral spirits, and lacquers which were thinned with a mixture that includes acetone, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), toluene, and iirc, xylene. The enamels were considered to be child safe back then. They aren't as low toxicity as the water / alcohol based acrylics we mostly use today. The lacquers were for adults, but we used them as teenagers. Sprayed through airbrushes. Toxicity and carcinogenicity are issues, and I know of one case where a professional painter of model trains (he worked at the Original Whistle Stop in Pasadena, California)got sick and died from inhalation exposure. Lacquers are still sold and used commercially for cars and furniture and various other applications. You can get some extremely fine details when using them, because the combination of the binder and thinner has a very thin viscosity. Safety precautions include: a well ventilated area - outdoors, or with a fan blowing fresh air past you towards the work, or in a spray hood; nitrile rubber gloves rated for solvents; safety glasses or goggles; and you may need an organic vapor rated respirator, preferably with a NIOSH rated N95 pre-filter for dust. An apron to keep splashes off of you is not a bad idea. If you are doing a lot of spray painting with lacquers, such as commercially, this may not be enough. We had none of that safety gear back in the 1970s - by 1990, I was using most of that list when I'd work with lacquers. These days, I can buy much better quality acrylics, and seldom use anything with more volatile and nasty organic solvents... Except for the clear coats and dull coats... Which is not to say that the alcohols from acrylic thinners, nor the micro-droplets of the pigment and binder, are in any way good for you to inhale. Airbrushing / spray painting can still make you sick or worse if you aren't careful. Also, the solvents in our cements and glues are nasty. If you work a lot with ABS and acrylic plastic and/or poly carbonates, you'll be using cements which contain methylene chloride, which while safer than the carbon tetra chloride (carbon tet) which is replaced, is not something to be treated casually. When I think about the huffers (glue sniffers) inhaling these solvents in an effort to get high, well, *that* gives me the cold shivers... talk about dumb things to do... Bottom Line: You do not need to fear the chemicals we use in our hobby, but you do need to follow some basic safety precautions in order to use them safely.

Wildcats are F4F. Hellcats are F6F!. And if you want to get real technical, F4F-3 Wildcats had non-foldable wing's, F4F-4's did!. Also I believe that the kit is what the Ranger looked like when she was regulated to a training carrier after Operation Torch!. F6F Hellcats didn't start being issued until 1943, and I believe Torch was in November 1942?.

Hey Andy! I am new to this modeling thing. I knew i wanted to get into it so i started off small and bought some 1:76 scale tank models and i am getting better at building the models however i have no idea what equipment i am meant to be using or how to weather. You are awesome when it comes to explaining what you are doing however for someone who is just getting into it it is hard to understand. It would be awesome if you could do a vid where you go into every detail that you do to complete a model such as how use an airbrush and how to clean it and how to thin the paint. You could also explain different techniques and stuff. Now i know you have a lot on your plate right now and i cant wait to see the other models you have in store for us but if you were to do this video and use a cheap model that people who are just getting into the craft can get and afford to make mistakes because lets face it all the models you do are great but fo someone starting off i just dont know what i am doing. Again i understand that you are busy but a vid like this would be really helpful to people like me who want to get into it but dont have the money to mess up a kit that costs £50. Thankyou for reading this if you did :)

Hi man, first I can recommend you to join Andy's Google+ community (Andy's Hobby Headquarters Modelcon) where are plenty of beginners and also plenty of skilled guys who will explain and tell you the stuff you need to know, you just need to ask. The second thing, I can help you with some thing I know as I'm in the hobby for some time building ships, planes and armour ..I'm discovering new techniques overtime I'm working on something so it's really hard to do a video explaining all that stuff. I you need some help just email me on noobman301@gmail.com

Robbie Guy Yea, like Lubomir says, it's pretty time consuming to put out videos to cover all the bases which is why I recommended just searching Andy's videos. Sounds like he put you on the right track, though. Good luck.

There have been a total of eight ships in the U. S. Navy named RANGER. The first RANGER was commanded by John Paul Jones during the War of 1812. CV-4 is the seventh RANGER. RANGER CV-61 is the eighth ship named RANGER and is the first carrier designed from the keel up with an angle flight deck. The French battleship Jean Bart was damaged from an air attack launched from CV-4 but Jean Bart was actually sunk from large armor piercing shells fired from thebattleship USS MASSACHUSETTS to keep her from being captured from the Germans.
