John and I had such a fun time in this video. While im still not sure air is for me, this kit is awesome, and we had a blast. You should check out Johns video. And be sure you tell him I sent ya. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g7hlGKO_Ybg.htmlsi=s8FsCnY4cwTIsc-C
Installing air bags on this kind of car doesn't feel right. Maybe if it was an OEM system.... But with the chrome tank and compressor inside the car feels cringe.
My MK7R is on AirLift 3P. Everything is hidden in the spare tire well. This is my first car on air and it’s better than any coilover car I’ve ever had. My R has DCC and it’s better than that. Like rails through corners and I can get it on a lift easy. I’m not sure I could go back.
I can definitely see Charles keeping the air suspension but getting longer struts and bags because this is just far too low for actually having fun driving.
Gotta side with Charles on this one... Air is for parking lot queens. Springs are for performance cars. The spring rate for bags is all over the place and they are nearly impossible to control with a damper. It's why even the best guys in the offroad scene won't touch a rig with just bags.
I love this episode!! @JohnLudwick , what a great job. There is something about forcing Charles to (in his eyes) make bad decisions on his builds that is just so funny and great to watch! Reminds me of the Passat Nos days
Air ride seems to be counter to the overall ethos of an RS3 swapped Golf R imo, especially a setup that low to start and that only goes lower from there. Would much rather have seen this on some nicely dialed in coils and I suspect Charles does too lol. Excited to see the car at wookies and hear a more complete verdict overall lol
@@HumbleMechanic There's a couple reasons why they won't compared to a dialed in static coilover of equal quality, but you're having fun with it, all good.
Absolutely adore the fact these episodes are a proper length and not just 3x 15 minute episodes of trying to fit some brackets. Quantity and quality - a rare RU-vid combo.
I stopped modding my gti after doing an IS38 with e48 map, new springs, bilsteins, rsb, poly bushings, bigger intercooler and uprated clutch. I was glad to be done. Watching Charles makes me want to start again. Take all my money
Commenting mostly for the algorithm since this series deserves a million views -- not just for the swap and mods, but for your showing us the thought process of solving problems such as welding together a radiator mount, splicing together an exhaust, wheel spacing, sifting through a hojillion parts catalog to find a shifter that works, etc, etc. Truly epic work!
Most epic golf swap project ✅️ Worst suspension option ever✅️ I guess that works if the car was on its 5th owner and if you plan on keeping it in primer and no bumpers.....
I think im in agreement with charles. Coilovers and would be done in a short time. No running lines, no buzzing compressor, no trunk space compromised. Im not an airride hater, those cars look cool and all and the adjustable aspect is cool too but i think this choice is outside charles usual MO
I would like to see more of the “issues” and “research” and “struggles” and plastic welding. A 10 hr video version of the nitty gritty stuff but all in all I love this serious 👍
I agree with Charles 100%. A good set of coil overs is so much more reliable and simpler to install. I don’t understand why people want to bag your car and lay it out like a spatchcock Turkey. Bottom line to each his or her own.
Yeah AirRide is controversial, but I dont understand why it has to be THAT low in the highest setting when Charles is clearly interested in driveability. These little bags are too low and have not enough travel in my opinion. Also the sporty RS3 engine, big- brakes and 4WD setup clash wioth a floaty air suspension. Atleats it can be all turned back to stock, I predict that a good set of coilovers is going to replace the air setup soon :)
I was open to the air suspension idea for a bit, until I heard it was the super low kit... Seems unfortunate to spend all the time and effort on the performance mods, just to completely slam it. Very autosalon spec.
@@HumbleMechanic Its more the model name implying its intended to be operated while slammed, compared to other air suspension kits that are more intended to operate around a normal lowering spring/coil over height. The brand names in the air industry I'm unfortunately not very knowledgeable about compared to the traditional strut/coilover companies. Not knocking the quality, more the product/model choice. By the end of the video it does look like it goes up to a reasonable height at its max setting, but because of the PSI required to bring it up to that height vs being slammed I wonder how it will ride/handle at a more normal height. Especially with it looking like it does not allow much suspension droop at all.
All good points. What we didn’t cover was that we raised the overall suspension after we filmed. I kinda wish we’d have made more of a point in the video. But we will cover more on the next video.
Installing the pipe tape backwards does indeed leads to bunching and leaking. This is a big nono in oil and gas but I guees in automotive it doesn't matter, lol.
I appreciate you giving the air ride a chance. I think they can be ran tastefully without slamming the car to the ground. With your setup, it seems like the highest setting is quite a bit lower than I'd be comfortable with. I have bags that I've been holding on to for well over two years now and in that time I also purchased and installed two sets of BC Racing coilovers (newest set is DS Series). I still don't know if I'll ever run the bags on my car, but I appreciate your video giving me a clearer picture of the process. Thanks for this series!
I don't care too much about the ride height, but I'm just really curious if a Golf on air bags can handle like a normal Golf R on steel suspension or something a bit stiffer like a Mk7 GTI Clubsport S or so on? Conventional steel springs and steel rollbars do ofter a certainly predictability. You don't tend to see air suspension as OEM on sport compacts (not so much even on the A45s, C63s, M2s & M3s? only on the E63s and M5s and above I think?), you don't even tend to see hydraulic suspension on sport compacts anymore -- not since the days of the MG TF and Citroen BX 16-valve.
Feel the same way about air ride, but John seems like the guy to install it and bag riders does seem like the right system… I’m interested to hear about how it drives. Great video man love these daza swaps
When everything works first try, youre doing an awesome job. I was especially impressed by the engine wiring in the last video. Perfect research, execution and even finish. Youre a real pro💪💪💪
Airbags?! I see you learned nothing from your previous experiments with compressed gasses. #nos_kills #paulsglassesareonupsidedown #partbumblebeepartoptimusprimer
As a non-mechanic car lover, this whole process is simply amazing. The amount of work and detail achieved in a relatively short amount of time is astounding to me. Great work guys! You should be proud.
Love this build, but not a fan of the air suspension. Honestly, I’m not even a huge fan of air suspension even in OEM fitment. Especially in sporty cars. Just doesn’t have that linear feel. Also, changing your height changes your spring rate. But it’s your car and I hope you love it.
I know the frustrations of major engine mods and air bag installation. It blows my mind you are doing them AT THE SAME TIME! I was LOL at all Charles’ airbag comments in this video!
this is basically a distillation of years of experience showcased because you can - not for the faint of heart or basically anybody other than foreign auto pros or they will find out what true sadness really is but it seems to have worked out for you and it is pretty interesting if nor recommended
Seeing Humble keep a happy, humorous attitude throughout this Frankenwagen build has been a treat. Old school steel springs and shocks would have been my choice. The upcoming body fender mods make me cringy, if you like sausage, don't watch the process to make it!
im with charles on this one !! the ride is too low , in a daily driver you want to clear anything on the road including potholes and any bumps or raises in the road , Air is awesome but that is just too low
at this point, just buy an rs3, it’s basically the same chassis and car. also the audi looks better, drives and rides better, it’s more refined and comfy and powerful, etc
I like the bags dude there I said it . Yea kw and all that jazz but I also like bags and this is super legit setup I was always throwing around the idea but I saw a bags are for groceries sticker that kept me away. Bag chasers is only brand id consider purchasing installing myself .
Very interesting video, in fact all the videos I have seen are educational. I live in england and to benefit with a great deal of the American cars I would need a disused airfield over here , Wales has brought in a 20 mph speed limit, all very silly indeed , I have offered for someone to walk ahead with a red flag. But they are not interested.
John is a good guy but most of his bills right now are old love the Mercedes build what she would do newer cars. And his videos right now are very very short.
Charles, your video series on this Swap is truly exceptional. I'm genuinely hoping that each episode, despite its considerable duration, doesn't end too quickly. Your work is truly commendable !
Again…. Air ride is a L. Cars built for looks are a L. Been following for years but this is 🗑️. I thought you were into building quality. Not some hot boy Cars and Coffee flexing crap. Air is garbage!!!!!!
@@HumbleMechanic does not change that you still put it on the car. Blasphemy! DAZA swap on air makes us all sad. also if you feel that way about air why put it on? clicks? clout? sponsorship deal? cross promotion? if air is so clearly in staunch contrast to your ethos than why put it on the whippy? also as always appreciate that you read and reply to comments. One of the reasons I have ben following you for so long is your reception of audience input.
There are 2 reason. 1) I wasn’t sure about fit and height with the body kit. 2) and this is the one that if you meant what you said, you’ll appreciate. I’ve crapped on air for years. Like I mentioned in the video my experience has all been in mostly trash cars. So rather than continuing to talk crap about something I have little proper experience with, I used this opportunity to educate myself. That doesn’t mean reading what Greasemonkey69 on vortex did. That means actually installing a system. Taking the time to properly set it up. Then giving it a proper evaluation based on the setup being right. If I’m truly to have a valuable and valid opinion, i want it based on more than riding a pos mk4 around. You may be right. Air may be “hot boy car and coffee flexing crap” But you may also be wrong. If you watched the video I made my feelings very clear on air both before and during the install. Now I’ll get some real world experience. If that’s not suited to you’re liking then I’m not sure what to tell you
I like air rides. not hating on it but they drive like utterly trash. i guess its a love / hate relationship. they look cool but comfort... meh... I will get some on my Golf MK2 GTI tho... but would not install it on this fast golf especially now with the DAZA in i!
I have a couple questions not about this swap but I can't find the answer anywhere. First. Is there any difference between the 2.0t blocks? If both have the timing chains is there any differences? Now for some older 1.8t transmission stuff. I have a 2001 B5 A4 FWD manual, transmission code EHV. I found a few Passat transmissions real cheap, like $75, code EZG. They came from 2000 - 2005 cars. What's the differences?
@HumbleMechanic Fan from Australia. Sorry this is unrelated to the video but I have a question I hope you'd be able to help with. My MK7.5 R just had work done under warranty regarding Oil pump gasket Failure. They completed the work (gaskets, added new Engine Oil, Coolant+1 litre Destilled water stated on invoice) and I've noticed the Coolant level is now way above the indicators on the overflow. Like it's 3/4 Full, is this normal? I've tried researching and seeing conflicting info here and there. Figured I'd reach out to you before I go questioning their work. Thanks :)
Charles you're a bad influence 😂. I have an MK1 Golf with an Audi 3.2 24v which sounds beautiful but the RS3 😮 ❤. I'm skeptical about air ride and will be avidly watching to gauge your opinion on it. Keep up the great work 👍🏼
Paul gets a pass on this. I had the exact same issue with my 034 front bar. That’s the thing with 034, there’s ALWAYS something. The sway bar mounts have zerk fittings but because they need to be lubed all the time. End links are adjustable but the joints are rattle like a 79 Caddy with 4 15s in the trunk. The same end links and toe arms don’t stay tight because they want you use copper grease on them. Their front upper strut mounts don’t even fit on the bearings AND they also…you guessed it, rattle. The only things I’ll even consider using of theirs at this point would maybe be the wheels. Everything else…maybe on a track only car. Definitely not on a street car
