The original amateur-built category D18 was adapted to comply with the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale microlight rules with the addition of larger flaps and renamed the D185. Both the D18 and D185 feature a cantilever low wing, two seats in a side-by-side enclosed cockpit configuration, fixed conventional landing gear and a single engine in tractor configuration.
The D18 is made with a wooden structure, covered in doped aircraft fabric. The 7.50 m (24.6 ft) span wing employs polyhedral configuration with the outer wing panels exhibiting much greater dihedral. Engines used include the 85 hp (63 kW) Jabiru 2200 four-stroke powerplant as well as Rotax, Limbach Flugmotoren and 58 hp (43 kW) Volkswagen 1600 automotive engines.
General characteristics
Crew: one
Capacity: one passenger
Wingspan: 7.50 m (24 ft 7 in)
Wing area: 10.5 m2 (113 sq ft)
Empty weight: 230 kg (507 lb)
Gross weight: 450 kg (992 lb)
Fuel capacity: 65 litres (14 imp gal; 17 US gal)
Powerplant: 1 × Jabiru 2200 four cylinder, air-cooled, four stroke
aircraft engine, 63 kW (85 hp)
Performance
Maximum speed: 235 km/h (146 mph; 127 kn)
Cruise speed: 220 km/h (137 mph; 119 kn)
Stall speed: 60 km/h (37 mph; 32 kn)
Rate of climb: 6 m/s (1,200 ft/min)
This build took me around 80 hours over 17 days to complete.

Thanks for the vid. Just ordered one for myself to trim and fly. Want to watch this for tips!

Looks like quite a stable flyer, that one. Great job again Rob!!

This was the other plane we took out but again the gusts just threw it all over the place.

I can see already that in any kind of breeze, larger, more powerful Planes will be needed. Here in the Desert, we get a LOT more than the typical "breeze".... I'll have to consider that, unless I only want to fly between 4am and 8am!! 😱

Another flawless covering job Rob. Just beautiful.

Many thanks Eric. But I think most of it is down to the tissue paper and how much it shrinks.

Another great video - really love these: they're always an inspiration. For me, only one little sequence is missing - do you ever fly them? I'd love to see that too! Thanks for the builds.

Depford Marketing .They never show them flying. Have you noticed how short the noses are on all of the kits ? The amount of lead required to get the CG in the correct position ,would make them to heavy for flight. Yes I do know about model design having had quite a few plans published.

@@tonywright8294 Interesting Tony - hadn't noticed really. I'm still going to build one though and do some testing...after my next Keil Kraft - which I know will fly!

sorry about my ignorance...but you say you used various templates for the covering? I've struggled for weeks without knowing these videos existed or even the help on the web site lol but i would love to finish with a florish...what templates and where do i find them ?
@robbrennanrc
@robbrennanrc 3 года назад
Hi David. The templates I used I made myself from sheets of A4 paper that I roughly measured then cut out and then trimmed until I was happy they were the right size meaning I didn't waste too much of the tissue paper.

Nice video. What canopy glue did you use? I ruined the canopy that came in my Jodel kit, trying to work out a major "dent" that it came with. I've seen pics of D-18s that have a "flat wrap" canopy, so I'll give that a try. Too much of a hassle to get a replacement part.

Hello David. I use Tiny amounts of Cyano (water thin super glue) which I apply with a spare bit of piano wire leftover from another kit. Sorry to hear about the dented canopy, must have been a real bummer!.

Quite interesting to see someone take on Rubber power....I flew it for many years, but have been away for almost 20 now. A good regular venue would get me back to stripping balsa and rubber once again......here is a link to what we were doing 20 years ago if you are interested...... www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?74297-Canadian-hotbed....at the time of most of these posts, electric indoor was just being worked on to check for feasibility......enjoy .... Ken Wiberg ...biggest secret to this endeavor is " wing loading "......minimize the weight and you'll have less inertia to do damage in a crash during initial testing.........less weight = lower power req and slower flight speed.....

I've got a good regular venue with a brilliant group of modellers over here in England - probably a little too far to come!!

As ugly as the model is, it is a well constructed plane model for 2 cell conversion R.C. plane model with just minor modifications for a trainer plane. Awsome build!
@robbrennanrc
@robbrennanrc 5 лет назад
Hello Richard. Yes she isn't much of a looker but yes I would say you could convert it to RC. On the plans there are markings showing where you could split the tail plane and rudder to make moveable surfaces. But honestly I wouldn't know where to start on that kind of conversion. Thanks for watching.

@@robbrennanrc No problemo, Rob! I've done 2 cell conversions on peanut scale planes made by Guillows. It very easy to convert if you know where and how to mount the engine, battery, speed controller, reciever, and servos for proper center of gravity(CG). I like using parts from a Eflite P51 basic BL 19" (self leveling reciever) wing span model. (Eflite.com). Great for trainer planes. The servo are tiny 2.1-2.3 gram long throw metal cylinders that can mount inside the wing. The motor is a 3000kv 2 cell. Plenty of power! The rudder, stabilizer servos, speed controller and reciever are on one board. The battery can vary. Very light weight. Easy to mount on 1/8"×1/6" balsa strips. "Warning..Eflite's R/C parts are very expensive. About $127.00 U.S. for all the parts There is another company named TestFlite that are much cheaper. They have flite packs with everything in it including tools. You would have to purchase a reciever and battery that is not in the packet though. (TestFlite.com). I hope my info is helpfull mate! "ENJOY!"
