You didn't build a projector. You learned patience, persistence, and self control. It reminded me of building electronic circuits when I was a youngster.
Right. I'm learning soldering. I've already used it to fix 2 broken electronics though, so it's well worth it. Right now I'm trying to use a halogen chip in an 8mm projector.
I think it's why people like Adam Savage has his fan following. Seeing grown men and women break down into childish glee over new toys and creative endeavours is inherently captivating. It is an inclusive social feeling to join in the joy of creating moments.
This video project that involved so much going wrong turned into a very sweet, true video. I think if it were me, I'd have given up on making anything when the beginning involved so much frustration; maybe that's what makes you different.
As someone with anxiety, I appreciate Jourdain's "It's a cool toy!" I've been on both sides of worry that someone is mad you've taken too long doing something.

This was lovely! Thank you for going through all the hassle of assembling and reassembly and trying to keep your hands in frame. The few times I've recorded myself crafting my hands constantly drifted out of frame, too.
Reminds me so much of playing with legos. Whenever I'd get to the point of a build where there was some working mechanism, I'd spend a good few minutes just fiddling around with it and riding the wave of euphoria that comes with building something - or even part of something - that works.
I was reading about Robert Paul just a couple of hours ago. Apparently, he built the camera that Georges Melies used in all of his films. Great video as always.
There's a scene in the South Park documentary "Six Days to Air" where Trey Parker is in his office working on the script for the next episode. He mentions how everybody else is waiting for him to finish because they can't get to their parts until he completes writing it for them first. This responsibility is obviously stressful. There's a Lego set on his desk that he's piecing together. He says, when the world is expecting a lot out of you, there's something soothing about being able to turn off and follow someone else's instructions to make something for a while. He points to other models on display that they've completed while on deadline

As a crafter (I was assembling a crocheted bat as I watched this), this was an unexpected delight to watch. These are already on my wishlist, nice to have it confirmed. Apropos, its amazon page says 5-8 hours, so four hours is pretty good going. :)
This was super cute and congrats on the build! I've done wooden puzzles before (much much simpler ones) and am surprised none of your parts broke (which kills any interest in finishing since it wont be 'perfect' then)
This was fantastic! I enjoyed every moment as I listened to your stress and tension, knowing a little bit of what that's like assembling some more simple yet annoying items (At least all the parts to your small projector fit together) , and trying my hand at VERY simple modding in a roguelike game, which ended up with me editing it OVER AND OVER AND OVER just to fix some tiny mistake I thought I had fixed. You did a great job Oancitizen. Thank you for sharing this with us Kyle. I am very happy to see you and your fiance are in good health and surviving well. I was a film projectionist for about 15 years. I bought the same model. As I was assembling it, I knew exactly what pieces I was looking at and could easily tell how all the gears and rollers would work together. It still took me about 4 hours to build the damned thing. Also, the splicing tape they gave me wasn’t very sticky, so I tried to use some old IMAX splicing tape that I still have. But my splicing tape was too old and just as lacking in stickiness. So I had to use scotch tape and try to burn through the spots where it overlapped with the sprocket holes.
Hang in there Kyle. Believe me I know, it's easy to spin in place feeling like there's no outlet. But, if this proves anything? It's that you still can. (Also I feel like this would have paired well with The Deadly Invention)

But I feel it should be enjoyed as the novelty it is, so I only have come across that kind of content very passively
If you're hurting for new content, maybe try taking suggestions from your audience for inspiration. I really like how you sometimes talk about linguistics, what the origin and interconnection of certain words are. And I'm sure you have a lot of interesting things to say about the recent trend of Adult animations (such as Bojack Horseman, Archer, Rick & Morty, etc.) and their appeal, and what it is about Children's animations that resonate so much with many adults, and shows/Films that follow a similar trend as each other (such as The Adams Family, the Munsters, Disney Junior's Vampirina, etc) and how they're distinct from each other and reboots of the same IP. Heck, even a more heavily edited version of Digibro After Dark style rants would be something.
As a past projectionist for our local theater, this product does appeal to me. Watching your video was great and entertaining. had to laugh. Now, tell us just how hard is this to build?

I don't see why this has to be a subject for instilling depression in the viewers. You and your brother have even more connections through, and I'm sorry for using corporate words here, "synergy" now than before, it seems. As a (software) engineer myself, it's important not to get so caught up in the failures that you lose passion for the art. It's just like making film itself - things can't always be perfect. Anyway before I sound too scattershot in the above train of thought I would like to point out that this is the first time I heard of this Maltese cross thing and it's nice to see a little more of how the mechanics work *at all*. Also this thing actually works, unlike some of the model Edison phonographs that Tecmoan tried to assemble...

😡 the part I'm working on is really frustrating. I've just put the crank together and when I turn it the light doesn't work. Looks like there is no way for the wooden part that goes flat against the motor to turn the teeth on it. Am I missing something. HELP. PLEASE 😄
