Laurence Dickie is widely considered to be one of the world’s best speaker designers. He started his career at Bowers & Wilkins, where he invented the patented Matrix cabinet enclosure and designed the Nautilus speaker, which featured another Dickie invention, the tapered tube, designed to dissipate the reward-directed energy from a driver diaphragm.
The Matrix construction and tapered tubes are still used by Bowers & Wilkins today, while the Nautilus loudspeaker has been in constant production for over 30 years, relatively unchanged from Dickie’s original design. That is an astonishing achievement. Today, Laurence Dickie is credited with cofounding Vivid Audio, where he holds the title of Technical Director and continues designing speakers based on the Nautilus concept.
What the Nautilus and Vivid Audio speakers have in common are tapered tubes and curvaceous cabinet shapes. In this video, Dickie describes how the ideas for the tubes and cabinets came to be-and he let’s the world know what he’d do if he could get his hands on a Nautilus loudspeaker to make it even better!

I heard a Vivid Giya G3 last week. Great speaker and beautiful design. For sure I will never spend 100k on a Nautilus (never heard but find it amazing) but would live happily for years with a pair of Vivid, which is at least 60% less expensive.

Outstanding video, designs and designer. I’d like to see the exponential bass taper within the Vivid Audio loudspeakers (maybe that’s trade secret thought). The Nautilus is such an icon, very cool how’s its revered and kept original by B&W to this day. I’ve actually never heard one. Absolute Audio in Calgary reps Vivid. Gotta go there in December.

Is there a more iconic loudspeaker than the B&W Nautilus? And will the Vivid Audio loudspeakers become just as iconic?

In a world of deep 6 figure speakers, he doesn't get the credit he deserves IMO. His engineering concepts brought to production yield some of the best sonics currently possible at a fraction of competitors' prices.

Mavericks are rarely recognised in their lifetimes. WIth that in mind Laurence Dickie is at least fairly well known!

I love the look of the Vivids - I'd rock a pair if I could afford them haha.
