Laurence Dickie is widely considered to be one of the world’s best speaker designers. He started his career at Bowers & Wilkins, where he invented the patented Matrix cabinet enclosure and designed the Nautilus speaker, which featured another Dickie invention, the tapered tube, designed to dissipate the reward-directed energy from a driver diaphragm.
The Matrix construction and tapered tubes are still used by Bowers & Wilkins today, while the Nautilus loudspeaker has been in constant production for over 30 years, relatively unchanged from Dickie’s original design. That is an astonishing achievement. Today, Laurence Dickie is credited with cofounding Vivid Audio, where he holds the title of Technical Director and continues designing speakers based on the Nautilus concept.
What the Nautilus and Vivid Audio speakers have in common are tapered tubes and curvaceous cabinet shapes. In this video, Dickie describes how the ideas for the tubes and cabinets came to be-and he let’s the world know what he’d do if he could get his hands on a Nautilus loudspeaker to make it even better!
