I really loved the line up with Brett and Jim, but what Doug, Theresa and Melanie are accomplishing right now is mindblowing. I really love this line up. I hope there will be a proper live record and I hope it will feature Broken Chairs.
I would have agreed shortly after they became a three piece again and you could feel that Doug was thrown out of his comfort zone and had some trouble, but now they sound ridiculously amazing. Like the other comment said, the audio quality doesn't do it justice
Way I see it, it's a different band and this band interprets these songs in unique and innovative ways and that's really exciting. I loved the triple-guitar attack of what I guess you could say was the "golden age" of the band -- like, duh, of course I did! Lol-- but to hear how Doug approaches these same songs (these old songs, that sound like they've been here forever ;) as the lone guitar provides an insight into his mind as a player and as a songwriter... it would be a fascinating experiment EVEN IF it were a failed one. But, at least imho, it's an unbridled success. One of my favorite things about BtS is Doug's willingness to embrace change, to never stagnate, to shake up the status quo whenever things start to feel to comfortable. One day, who knows, BtS may retake the form of a sextet with three lead guitarists. Maybe not. But one thing I know is that whatever form this band takes, it will take entirely in order to serve Doug's artistic vision. It's rare (and getting rarer all the time) that an artist achieves the kind of autonomy that Doug enjoys and it's our privilege to be here for it. That's how I feel anyway.
