Bulalo, Polvoron & Barquiron 🇵🇭 | Trying Filipino Food in Manhattan

I tried Filipino food for the first time in Manhattan at a restaurant that specializes in cooking from the Philippines. See me react to Bulalo (beef shank soup) that had bone marrow and lots of pechoy. You can also see me try Filipino candies like polvoron and barquiron at a Filipino grocery store in the East Village. This restaurant is known to have some the best Filipino food in New York. The Pinoy hospitality was great and my server helped me with how to eat each dish. I highly recommend Bulalo soup for a comforting cold day or this warm, 100-degree day that made me feel like I was in the Philippines!
Episode Intel:
Grill 21
346 E 21st St, New York, NY 10010
Reggie Ate: Bulao (beef bone marrow soup)
Johnny Air Mart
214 Avenue A, New York, NY 10009
Reggie Ate: polvoron (ube and pandan Filipino shortbread), Barquiron De Casoy (Filipino candy)

As Filipinos we like to feed people, it’s just ingrained in us. specifically people that appreciate Filipino food. I think I can speak for most Filipinos when I say that watching you trying to figure out how to eat certain dishes & also watching you shop, we’re all wishing that we were there with you to offer some coaching lol.

What I like with your approach is you know that the "ulam" or dish, is eaten with the rice. Oftentimes with non-Filipino youtubers you see them just eat the ulam by itself and try the rice maybe 1 or 2 times (sometimes even the rice by itself), without realizing that the "dish" is what's used to flavor the rice, the way you don't eat the pasta noodle by itself and instead eat it with the pasta sauce, or the way you don't eat solely the bread from the sandwich by itself and instead eat it with the rest of the sandwich. Also, oftentimes the taste of the dish is made much more concentrated or flavorful because the intention is it's the rice that will balance its taste.

Just a small thing as a guide: whenever any Filipino item has a name spelled with a "c" in between, it is usually read in spanish, sound like "s" unlike how Italian "ch" sound. So tocino should sound like "to see noh" You've been consistent with liking the Filipino cooking. Thanks! I was salivating while you were eating that Bulalo.

@@unculturedtravel if you're also fond of cooking at home, you can make a tender, spicy variation: you can start by boilng half cup of water and cut up the meat to bite size with a kitchen scissors before laying it on the boiling water. Medium heat. Drop some chili flakes or cayenne powder (according to your preferred spiciness) and keep stirring until the water is almost dry. Put some oil and turn the heat a little higher to quickly sear the meat but keep the tenderness inside. That's it. Happy eating!

@@unculturedtravel gee, thanks for responding! Polvoron goes well with coffee, yes... but it can't be dipped, since it's just compacted powder, it'll just break down in coffee instantly, it'll be like coffee mate 😂 btw, if you can get a hold on Philippines' Baraco blend coffee, its aroma is so fragrant and its flavor so robustly wakening. Warmest regards from Manila, Philippines!

For Bulalo, I prefer the knee cap than the bone marrow, w kalamansi, fish sauce & chili (combined) at the side to suit your taste. And to help you say things in Filipino, read/say the words by syllables w the normal A, E, I, O, U sounds. No "schwa" sounds. Hope that helps.

Thank you! The tip "read/say the words by syllables w the normal A, E, I, O, U sounds. No "schwa" sounds" is very helpful! What is the knee cap cut called in the Philippines?

@@unculturedtravel dont know what the knee cap cut is called but you can ask when they have bulalo if they have the knee cap. The collagen / cartilage gives it more flavor and texture.
