I love mine!!!!! In my younger years I could dig holes but being older now the auger is my best friend. Lol. I also use the high pressure water nozzle to clear the soil away from the roots or around any obstructions such as rocks. I actually got the idea of using hp water from watching a Badger video for removing large trees.

I was told by a local gentleman who grows acres of garlic to plant my garlic cloves after the first freeze in the fall. Last year, I left it a little later than I should have.🤷‍♂️ I had bought the set of the drill bits (3, maybe 4 of them🤔🤷‍♂️) each a different size, a year before & used them to plant my fall garlic cloves, both in a container and in a garden bed. Last Fall, being late to plant my garlic, I actually drilled through about a half inch of frozen soil to get my garlic planted.🤦‍♂️ I confirm, this Spring all my garlic planted using one of these drills are doing just fine!

I bought a set for my naturalized food forest. I tend to have a sandy loam soil. It has become one of my favorite garden tools!

I broke 3-4 of those bulb augers using a 9amp corded hammer drill. I was trying to aerate my soil and amend it but it would get caught in roots or hit a rock and the weld on the blade broke. I ended up ordering a couple 4 in drills one being 2ft long and the other 3ft long. Those things are built like tanks cutting into my heavy clay and hard pan making a clean wide hole.

For thick clay soil and weaker drills, get the skinnier auger. Or you can wait till it rains to soften the soil first before drilling. To evade squirrels from digging, I prefer drilling under my perennials at an angle so squirrels trying to dig straight down will have a harder time.

The small auger works great for garlic. We use the 3" one for planting starts in 2" soil blocks. The best tool ever for planting leeks to a great depth and you don't have to fill the hole in.

It's great for vegetable gardening, used a larger diameter one to core out soil , refill with sieved compost for parsnips

Augers work very well for pre drilling a hole for tree food spikes. No more broken spikes shattering. Also thought about just adding timed release fertilizer in the hole and forgoing the spikes.

I have lots of shale here in Nova Scotia. I love my auger which easily goes through shaley soil

I have the larger version and really like it. I found it was much better on low speed, I also really like it for mixing amendments in and breaking up new compressed potting mix's. I use it to plant my starts too as i grow them in larger pots.

About 20 years ago the bulb auger was my go to when getting young people interested in gardening. 😂😂 Our church would have a class out to plant bulbs every fall and bored faces would change drastically when taking turns with goggles and a bulb auger in hand. All would have a great time then when they left for home, I would spend hours redigging the beds and planting all the bulbs properly. Would add 3 times as much work for me but hopefully some went on to become gardeners after all their "garden help".🙄

I love these augers. I use these with no issues. Roots can be a pain but for rooted plugs they are quick and easy.

If you go over to the channel Garden Answer, they have bigger augers and bigger motorized tools. They have powdery soil and make holes for transplanting from cans.

Bought the original Lee Valley unit a decade ago, when I planted boxes of bulbs from Veseys. Thankfully redesigned it to remove the stupid 'flag' that practically prevents a hole deeper than 7 inches. You are right about the 3" diameter Robert, one size works for all. Another feature to look for --- the part that fits into the drill chuck... is it square or triangular? Had a metal working buddy fix the original round part so it wouldnt slip when it hit the many maple roots. And buy a big a$$ corded drill.

I have had two augers for years. Do I use them? I am on Sandy loam, so the auger backfills quickly. In areas where I have built the soils up with compost and clay, they are great. However I use the large one the most for turning and aerating compost. Well worth the expense. Buy a good torque drill though😊. And mine are much sturdier than the one you are displaying

I saw a video of an older gentleman using one of those to blast out 30+ onion start holes in about 2 minutes for his family garden. It just makes sense. Work smarter and not harder. I've seen people use large ones for potatoes, but at that point I find it a little silly if you're not mass planting them.

Very important to use both hands to hold onto the drilll!!!! You could very easily twist or break your wrist if you hit a rock. 😮

I have a manual bulb planter that digs a hole abad holds the soil until you want to release back in the hole. I used it to plant garlic. No electricity required.

It’s much better for mass planting of quart size transplant with 4 inch auger. You can also make bigger holes by spinning the auger bit. But watch out for kickbacks. They hurt.

Would you use a 3 incher to plant seedlings directly into a lawn and then put some wood chips on after ? Or is that a bad idea. I have an impact driver and a drill but I'm thinking the impact driver might have more gusto especially if there's small stones or roots.
@79PoisonBreaker
@79PoisonBreaker 5 месяцев назад
Impact driver will have a hard time to attach as it is like a drill bit round. Mine is anyhow. I started some corn and used drill to plant in the grass heavy clay and they grew 6 ft and gave plenty of harvest. not sure wood chips be best much choice as it likes to lock up nitrogen but probably work ok IMO

I planted >800 bulbs with the 3" auger last fall. Didn't break my wrist but it felt like it. Learned to brace the battery against my knee to lessen the spin when it hits a rock.
@Ana-qd7zh

Use a battery drill with a solid side handle and a reliable anti-kickback feature. But you should still brace the drill against your leg to protect your wrist..

I use a 1/2" Ryobi and adjust the torque and speed to minimize kickback. These are a real time saver.

If you don't use it you'll lose it. Use a manual planter and be stronger for it. If the soil is too hard then soak it first.
