Bulb Mode Photography. The Holy Grail of long exposures. Setting 30 seconds using manual mode just won't cut the mustard. To get silky smooth seas in your coastal shots you need to enter the bulb mode. In this video, I'm going to show you how I do that and take a long exposure to silky smooth seascapes
I have a Canon 5D Mark 4, but the techniques and methods that I describe in the video will work on any DSR, mirrorless, or film camera.
One question that I am asked all the time is how I work out the exposure when using my Lee Little Stopper. I'm going to share that as well.
I have an updated video with even more information, better techniques and updated explanations

Great video as always been playing with a 10 stop in bulb mode for a bit but only guessing at the times , I have now downloaded the app thanks Brian

Great! Glad you found it useful. That works well at giving you a starting point, but I always end up bracketing. It just gets scary when a 2 minute exposure becomes 4 minutes and that’s only 1 stop!!

Yep! It’s a beast. Not as bad as it looks lots of space inside. Kind of one size fits all. It’s about 17kg on a normal day out and 23.5kg on a wild camp.

I had a remote with a timer and could never work out how to use it. I think my new 5D4 has a timing facility within, so I need to get to grips with that. Have you tried that at all. I like the beach as well so may have a trip there after lockdown
@BrianNorthmorePhotography
@BrianNorthmorePhotography 3 года назад
Deborah Hammond I try and keep things as simple as possible. The remote I have has a timer for but I manually close the shutter I just watch the seconds tick by on the timer screen. I haven’t tried the timer on the 5D. sounds more complication than I need. The stop watch on you phone or watch is all you need. If you think about it you don’t have to be that accurate if you’re shooting at 30 seconds then 5 seconds is only 1/6 of a stop so even if you close the shutter 2 seconds late it’s less than 1/12 of a stop. don’t complicate it - just go out and shoot!

How Can I know correct exposure if whatever I like releases shutter? I got underexposed or overexposed in bulb mode?
@BrianNorthmorePhotography
@BrianNorthmorePhotography Год назад
Easiest way to work it out is to increase the ISO go all these way up as high as you need to go. Then each time you 1/2 the ISO or reduce it by one stop double the shutter speed / increase it by one stop. Hope this makes sense and helps you.

This lee filter app is no longer available for contemporary android, at least in Canada.

That’s interesting. I use it on iOS so can’t comment. There will be other apps that should have the same functionality but presented in a different format.

Do you think it would help with sharpness if we all put the mirror in lock up when trying extreme long exposures? My Canon 80D has a bulb timer you can set to however many minutes or even hours you want. Then on top of that you can use the timer on 2 or 10 seconds to start the photo which is a really good way of using bulb mode if you don't have a remote, or the phone app doesn't want to connect to the camera. A bit of a funny story. Yesterday I went to use bulb made again and had set up the camera at sunset, so I could set the focus ready for when it got dark. I just couldn't remember how to use the bulb timer. 😂 It had been a while since I used it. It was set on 3 minutes, so I had to stick to that. 😂 So I had to wait till it was a bit darker then I was going to, plus it was also a bit windy and the lighthouse with sea around it, was quite a way away, so I needed a focal length of 160mm. In the end, they didn't turn out pin sharp, but no worries, the idea was there and I liked it and the lighthouse isn't going anywhere. I can try another day. I'm wondering if it would also help if I had put the mirror in mirror lock up would help with movement too. What do you think.

There are so many different things at play here in your particular situation. So using the mirror lock up will help with sharpness, only if you are using the view finder. In live view the mirror is always locked up. The other point in your case is you are shooting at 160mm focal length in windy conditions. I would think it is most likely that any lack of sharpness from camera movement are due to these 2 factors. In windy conditions you may need to use your body to shield the camera from the wind. Make sure your tripod legs are open as wide as possible, don’t use the centre column extension, find stable ground to put the tripod on. Make sure everything is locked down tight. Good luck next time. Thanks for watching, commenting and asking questions.

@@BrianNorthmorePhotography thanks for your quick reply and thanks for the great info. Yes I probably could have done some of those things better. I did have the tripod legs resting on an area of concrete, but admittedly I didn't have the legs apart more then the standard angle, though I was behind some 3ft high scrub, but still not sheltered from the wind. I also only had them extended by one section. I also used live view and the screen to save bending down as much. I didn't realise the mirror locks up with live view. I never knew that. I probably should have used the 10 second timer too instead of the 2 second one. I will know better for next time now, thanks again. 🙂

What is the stop ? And how stops works?
@BrianNorthmorePhotography
@BrianNorthmorePhotography 3 года назад
Sorry I’m not entirely sure I understand the question. But I think you are referring to f stop on the lens i.e f5.6 changed to f8 is 1 stop. And with shutter speed 1/125 change to 1/250 would also be 1 stop.

@@BrianNorthmorePhotography Is it has any role in photography ?
@BrianNorthmorePhotography
@BrianNorthmorePhotography 3 года назад
Yes F stop and shutter speed is how you control exposure amongst other things. You need to look up a video on photography exposure. I’m sorry I don’t have one on my channel.

Sorry but with a title of bulb mode photography I would have expected you to show that function in the camera menu. Also you have a modern camera so there is no requirement for an external timer. Other than that your pictures were good.

Hey, thanks for you feedback. I have got a plan to produce a new video this summer. That video is very old from when I just started RU-vid. I’m old school and will probably always use a separate timer 😂. But you are right my camera does have a timer. Not all cameras do.

May be worth mentioning never walk around the site you are photographing, foot prints in the sand are hard to photoshop out and always know the high tide times before you leave home
