When he started to horizontal spin at 2:36, just look after 180 degree turn, he almost pushed the machine into the ground at 2:38 - what he luckily did was pushing the stick strongly in front to get the nose heading higher and ensuring a safe spin back. Very quick reaction.
There are many better clips of the same flight, but labeled in Bulgarian. The pilot piloting is General Radev, internationally acknowledged as Bulgaria's top ace pilot. The display is meant to look breathtaking, but in reality every element was very carefully rehearsed multiple times and then approved for public display by higher commanders. I would not attribute any of what looked like near crashes to bad luck neither getting out of them to luck and quick reaction to danger. Gen Radev has been known since the 80s as one of the few outside the MiG bureau test pilots who actually knows how to operate a MiG 29 at extreme regimes. This knowledge is very well displayed here. Amazing pilot!
Actually the maneuver was done after touching the tarmac with the landing gear and it was done with the gear down. Doesn't make it any less dangerous if anything it adds to it. @@NazarovVv Ya, its dangerous but a majority of airshow maneuvers are dangerous, it's why a ton of display pilots die from misjudging altitude or just forgetting to set the QFE for that specific airfield at that specific day because they didn't listen to the ATIS. That being said, this display is exempt from a ton of safety regulation for international and US airshows, like maneuvers towards the crowd being banned. Going inverted with the gear down, under 100 feet, in mil power or possibly in AB and pushing almost full forward stick to keep the aircraft steady is suicidal, good pilot or not. This wouldn't be allowed anywhere outside of BG my guy.
