The Bulgarian arms manufacturers are highly competent, and better than most, anywhere. I have several weapons that were made in Bulgaria within the last ten years, and they are rock solid, reliable and well constructed. I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to buy a gun that was made in Bulgaria. They're doing it right, without the excessive price tag.

This is an interesting because I have always wondered if the reliability reputation of the PKM is due to the rimmed 7.62x54R cartridge. If it performs just as well in 7.62x51 then we know that all of the magic is in the mechanical design alone.

The difference is in the barrel. The production of the Bulgarian barrel is very different from the Russian, which leads to slower heating and longest shooting and life. This is why the Bulgarian copy is better than the Russian original.
@tankolad
@tankolad 5 лет назад
The MG1M barrel is fluted like the original PK, but the Soviets found that it did not improve barrel cooling significantly so the fluting was discontinued for the improved PKM.
@ДмитрийЧеботарёв-щ2у
Do you understand the absurdity of your statements? That is, in your opinion, the second strongest army in the world, as well as the second largest prodavayets weapon, makes its own weapon quality worse than the Bulgarians? : D When there is nothing to be proud of, it remains only to be proud of those who make weapons of a foreign country, while fantasizing about its “incredible” quality.

@herman7661 5 лет назад
Excellent video. Interesting that this gun is chambered for the 7.62 x 51round and not in the Russian rimmed 7.62 cartridge, yet the feed system is identical to the original. The Polish 7.62 NATO version of the PKM has a modified feed system, based on that of the MG 42, I believe. This makes them somewhat heavier. Even though this gun is in 7.62 NATO, it is not able to use NATO belts. The belt seems to be a proprietary item.

Best PK evolution is the PKP "Pecheneg"
@morenamordegard8073
@morenamordegard8073 9 лет назад
Nope, you can't change the barrel on it, you don't have the bipod on the gas tube so you got nothing to grab on during firing on the move and it's about one kg heavier as the pkm... so what is better on the pkp pecheneg?
@Andriucha1987
@Andriucha1987 8 лет назад
Morena Mordegard "Pecheneg" is modernization of PKM - so you think that creators were so dumb, to create machine gun worst to predecessor??? The design of a barrel is the main feature of "Pecheneg". In it the new complex technical solutions which reduce thermal warming-up of barrel, so therefore no need to change the it. Optimization of cooling of a trunk, use of a casing allowed to get rid of the thermal "haze" arising when firing. "Pecheneg" can shoot 600 shots non-stop (3 boxes with tapes on 200 cartridges, i.e. a standard allowance of ammunition for unit) Also conducting long burst - can shoot to 1000 cartridges an hour without deterioration of fighting characteristics and reduction of a resource of a barrel which makes not less than 30 thousand shots. "you don't have the bipod on the gas tube so you got nothing to grab on during firing on the move" - lol, does the bipod role is use as handle?? Bipod were placed in to the front of gun - to increase stability of a machine gun. Also, PKM bipod position limited the sector of fire at the front without movement of the shooter. If shooter need to grab machine gun on during firing on the move he can use tactical handle like this: ic.pics.livejournal.com/werewolf0001/19818176/1405480/1405480_original.jpg or use shorted version of Pecheneg: cdn.topwar.ru/uploads/posts/2013-10/1382607695_xu1aj.jpg strela.in.ua/images/cms/data/3324835.jpg cs7010.vk.me/c540105/v540105004/112b4/bzFE6d-jKWI.jpg

***** No, my cousin serves in RU spec ops (at North Caucasus border region) and they using "Pecheneg". So, to me were interesting his opinion of this machine gun by comparing it with PKM, which I personally used during my serve time in Russian army, as conscript.
@morenamordegard8073
@morenamordegard8073 8 лет назад
XXAndriuchaXX But what are you gonna do when the barrel is worn out? You can't change it, you have to waste the whole machine gun. I guess making a new barrel with the heat casing would be a mouch cheaper sollution. And the bipod on the Pkm can be used to grab on during firing on the move, so you don't have to attach any tactical grips or rails or something like that. Also, you don't have to fire 600 rounds non stop, who should carry that much ammo? Btw the Pkp is about 1kg heavier than the pkm, also because of the frontal mounted bipod it's more nose heavy. If you like the Pkp i have no problem with that, but I'll stick with the classic Pkm or the Pk with high quality milled receiver.
@Andriucha1987
@Andriucha1987 8 лет назад
Morena Mordegard "But what are you gonna do when the barrel is worn out? You can't change it, you have to waste the whole machine gun." lol, from where you get this nonsense? In "Pecheneg" you also can change barrel, but as I said before, the resource of a barrel is 30 thousand shots when firing in the intensive modes, so for machine gunner don't need take second barrel with itself as with PKM. "And the bipod on the Pkm can be used to grab on during firing on the move, so you don't have to attach any tactical grips or rails or something like that." Does it so big minus if that replacing bipob in front - let to hardening the barrel and increased gun stability and reduced dispersion to 70%? "If you like the Pkp i have no problem with that, but I'll stick with the classic Pkm or the Pk with high quality milled receiver." Its yours opinion, but I stick with opinion of who use this machine gun in battle.

But I'm glad the SEALs are still rocking those M60s. That is how you tell its a fantastic gun. Frankly, we would have been better off adopting an MG3 variant with a reduced fire rate than the M240.

Pretty nice weapon, although it could benefit from a handguard/foregrip. At a time when the West was still going for big-ass GPMGs like the MAG, the M60, and the MG3 (only exception being the HK21, which for some reason never caught on), the Russian approach was certainly an interesting idea, maybe even ahead of its time (judging by the buzz created by the Mk48 today). Nice gun.

Like the German machinegun holding technique of WW-2 for the Russians use basically the same technique. I find holding the bottom of the rear section of the stock, with the non-firing hand stabilizes the weapon far better than the method taught to hold M-60. The PKM stock is set up especially for the underneath hold technique which you, Larry are using very effectively. I find it works better to keep the muzzle from rising than the technique of non firing hand on the side of the stock near the receiver, with fingers over to top front of the stock. Great weapon for sure.
