Bulgaria is in the grip of a prolonged heatwave with temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius.
June was the warmest month since records began and locals are flocking to parks, rivers and lakes to cool off.
STORYLINE
Shade, a hat and water - essentials in Bulgaria where temperatures are soaring.
Meteorologists have warned the record-breaking heatwave will continue over the next few days with sizzling temperatures in most of the country and a high of 43 degrees Celsius.
Authorities have issued a nationwide warning for dangerously high temperatures.
The mayor of the capital, Sofia, even ordered cold water to be pumped on the sweltering asphalt-covered main streets where temperatures have hit around 35 degrees Celsius.
Hospitals and health centres are on alert for patients suffering from the effects of the heat. City authorities have set up spots where bottled water is offered for free.
Bulgarians are flocking to parks, rivers and lakes to cool off, such as this idyllic wild swimming spot near the village of Kokalyane.
“We come to the rivers, to the waterfalls to cool off, sometimes to the pools," says 32-year-old Vera Vergilova after taking a dip in the river Iskar.
"It's 40 degrees in the northwest, it doesn't feel that much here, while where we're from it does and it's very difficult," she adds.

Marin Kirilov, a 25-year-old mountain biker, escapes the scorching heat of the capital by heading to the nearby mountains or for a swim.
“I often go to a swimming pool or swim in a river or lake. It's good when I'm not at work to cool off and take a swim. I often combine a walk with a refreshing dip," he says.
The prolonged hot weather began in June, which was the warmest month in Bulgaria since records began in 1930, according to the National Weather Bureau.
No significant rainfall is expected in Bulgaria this month.
