A swimmer in the waves off a beach is attacked by a shark --- it's a frightening scenario. But in India, the victims aren't in the ocean ... they're waist-deep in a river.

There are already fully freshwater species of shark, such as the Ganges and Bornean river sharks, they grow one or two metres in length and are bottom feeders. They are closely related to bull sharks. Also, Pondicherry sharks, which have been rediscovered, can and do spend most and if not all of their time in freshwater.

Way late, but they won’t be in lakes unless they got in there through a storm (like breaking open an access point, etc.) or if they were chasing prey and physically moved over a point of access or barrier. Or unless someone puts it there, which apparently happened in my town in the 1970s or 80s. Someone (allegedly) put a really young shark in a lake after driving it back from the beach (30mins-1hr drive) Rivers on the other hand are absolutely common for sharks to frequent but apparently humans don’t see them too much, that’s what google says.

!st comment was spot on. Bull sharks are the #1 attacker of humans in Florida where their are plenty of aggressive species. Tigers and Hammerheads to name a few. Oh yeah, the vast majority of these attacks occur up condo laden rivers. Dive off the dock and risk bull shark attack but this is a well established fact. Don't see why a trip to India was necessary when it was a forgone conclusion.

Almost any predatory shark will hunt humans that have fallen victim to them a couple or so times because then they acquire a taste for them. Just like many Crocodiles in various regions of Africa will not hesitate to stalk people over other prey, because the way those African tribes bury their dead by putting them in rivers, the crocs feed on them which results in acquiring a taste for people and that's what they go after.

What inlet? The barrier islands in my state have bays that separate them from the mainland, where it’s mostly salt water, might be brackish at a few spots where rivers open up to it….not a stretch that sharks would make their way through the inlets and into the bays. Never in my life have I seen one in the bays, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

Depends on the species. Great whites will “test bite” something to see if it’s edible. If it’s not, they spit it out, and the bites usually aren’t that deep. Bull sharks however will bite anything and not let go and are more aggressive cause they have very high testosterone levels.
