Good job. I found one made out of a 30-06 made around ww1 . By my grandfather that served in the army.

Well, Gary....... I hadn't made a whistle in ages, so figured to watch how you made yours. I'd never seen someone make a silent dog whistle before! Of course it wasn't silent, but my old man ears sure couldn't hear a dad blamed thing, not so much as a tiny squeak! Lol.

Years ago my grandpa had a willow tree in his back yard. One day he told me to fetch some sticks that were soaking in the rain barrel behind his garden shed. He proceeded to make me a whistle out of a willow branch. Still have that whistle 55 years later. Sits in my gun cabinet on a shelf with some other things of sentimental value. Your video reminded me of the time I spent with him on that afternoon so long ago. Thanks Gary! Cheers, Whipple By the way, how his that shoulder of your's healing up? Feeling strong again?
@garyhuston

The shoulder is getting better very slowly, it’s still very painful.

Did he make it by slipping off the bark and using that for whistle body?? I seem to remember something like that in my 1950's childhood...

@@ericsprado4631 Yes he did! After getting all the inner part of the stem trimmed just right we dried it on his stone wall and it got tight again.... Funny how that stuff stays with you. Whipple

For the deluxe version, a fellow could punch out the used primer (USA-made cases are preferred as they use the single-hole Boxer primer system) and solder ring in there for a lanyard.

That’s what i did on the 308, you can just see it at the end of the video.

I am thinking you didn’t push the plug in far enough. I make the exact same design out of dried River cane and wood, and the whistles are ear piercing.

wouldn't a .270 bullet trimmed flat etc. work as well..? It would fit casing perfectly. Don't have a lathe in my field tool kit... thanks for video I'll make some up..

Strewth, what in England would anyone be using a 270 winchester round on? It would turn a fox in to a pink mist... even a deer it would bruise a lot of the meat.
@otdj3794
@otdj3794 2 года назад
Muntjack possibly, deer most likely, fox very possibly. It doesn't really matter if it turns to pink mist, you only killing it to stop it eating other things. We have a calibre requirement for deer .243 is the smallest we can legally use on them.
@garyhuston
@garyhuston 2 года назад
Mostly fallow deer and some foxes. Muntjacs aren’t really a problem here.

As an American, I can tell you confidently that you're incorrect. .270 Winchester is actually on the smaller side for hunting cartridges.

Probably, but so what? It’s solder not cyanide!

I thought firearms were heavily restricted in the UK. How is it that someone was shooting in some random place where you were walking your dog?
@garyhuston
@garyhuston 7 месяцев назад
The deer numbers have to be kept down so the farmers don't loose too many crops. There are men licensed to kill a certain amount per month/year. Then the meat is sold locally. They have tree platforms all around the area.

Bullet casings? Cartridges old chap! Stand to for weapon inspection! "I have no live rounds or empty cartridge cases in my possession SIR!" I know it's hard to believe but a lot of soldiers used to have a nice little side line in scrap collecting.

@@garyhuston My mind is strange. I don't know the law well enough, so I would have. Although you mentioned that there was a likely explanation for there presence, seeing bullet casings would be an odd enough occasion for me to give me pause.

They were found on private land where there is a legitimate deer hide used by the local ranger. If they had been live it may have been a different story!

They certainly are! You'll just have a higher-pitched whistle. I myself would like to try it with some of the surplus .50 BMG cases I have.
