Skipping warm ups? Got some skills and causing some trouble? Being the middle child of the BJJ family you are taking shots from above and below. JT & Joey both recognise the risk and potential of a good purple belt and if you don't pay attention they can catch you slipping.
Your experience at purple belt is good enough to threaten the higher belts but the lower belts have a target on your back.
Depending on your journey a lot of your BJJ game is built at this stage in the game and you are starting to wake up to your potential and starting to come into your own. Competing, full-time training, travelling internationally but how long can it be sustained?
Is purple the most important belt? Whether you agree or not it is a great time in your jiu-jitsu life so live it up.

You guys hit a topic that hits me really hard. I'm at purple now, but I feel so lost. Like, where is my BJJ going? I feel like my game is extremely broad and Jack-of-all-trades... I know it's not a bad thing, but I'm not excelling in one spot in particular enough to really work on building an a game.

In a journey of such length, it's easy to get lost at any point on the path. Sounds like a good time to zero in on some things you want to develop within your game : )

Love to view this podcast for, yet another time. You guys mentioned: good memories for blue belts. Could you expand on that ? All I often hear about the blue is: the beginner belt, the Walt Disney belt (Firaz Zahabi, says). I could go on and on, I just see how many people spite on the blue. Please tell me how you give value to the blue belt, for the ones who earned it.

There is a guy at our place that your story reminds me of lol. He has a delightful & friendly personality and you would never have guessed the he was a complete freaking monster once he rolls! It's hilarious because the best way I could describe him is the personality of Richard Simmons but is legit Jiu Jitsu master! rofl

I honestly don't understand how you warm-up less as you progress. For me the natural progression as I develop is to be more aware of my body, which means working to prevent injury and train for longevity. Seems like someone that does that is learning jiu jitsu technique but missing a lot of other lesson available from the art.

Completely agree and I warm up more and pay far more attention to my body now as a purple belt. Conditioning is king as far as I’m concerned. It exists in styles such as karate but for some reason Jiu Jitsu seems to disregard it.

I think warm ups are good. But they can take up class time. I personally go early and get a little extra but i can see that if you don't do the warm ups you get warm with the techniques alone. Those that want to can do it on their own early, some classes I heard don't do warm ups. To each their own.
@johnmcdonagh374
@johnmcdonagh374 Год назад
@@alexvalles4153 take up class time yes, but as they say a stitch in time saves 9. For overall longevity, it's best practice. If you don't make an effort to warm up, and activate various muscle groups before something as strenuous on your body as BJJ your asking for trouble down the line. I agree each to their own, but just because a class does something doesn't automatically make it good practice. You can be a black belt in BJJ but a blue belt in diet, conditioning or basic knowledge of human physiology. If my class had no warm-ups I would definitely do as you said and arrive early and get it done.

I’m a 26 yr old brown and I’ve definitely decreased my training due to life lol. Started going to school and got a girlfriend. I don’t see myself quitting but I’m not going to compete as much. Trying to focus on getting better at coaching

I'm actually looking forward to earning my Purple belt within a year to a year and a half from now. I have been Blue belt for roughly a year and right on my way to Purple if I keep training hard. It's not so much the belt I am after, more so the able to just be freaking competent and effective in what I am doing! lol both in terms of rolling, but more so; Self defense on the street, which also includes striking, take downs and throws/trips. I am adding in technical sparring, Judo and No Gi/Wrestling into the mix 2023.

@@soonahero Not yet. I did however add Judo and more grip work and take down stuff into the mix since then and it balanced my game out overall. I’m also making all the right connections and transitions that I want to, so I’m on the right track 👍

Last. Promise. Been in grappling for 20 years. 2 years or so with the gi (blue belt) and the rest in the nogi realm. For me, a promotion =learning acquiring a new effective skill, and making work on any student. The next level = new skill set. You say by the time you reach the purple, you should reach the black belt, but I prefer, at my actual stage, when I reach the decade benchmark, I knew I was in for all my life. Switch the color belt label for something else, it pisses me off to read or hear about this belt doing that, and that belt means this, ok cool. About? It's man vs man, and style vs style? Cause what really matters, in the end, is this.
@bulletproofforbjj

thanks for the comment. belt colours do make for a simple reference point most of us can understand tho.
@tededo
@tededo Год назад
I don't believe there is such a thing as the most important belt. I think there is such a thing as the most critical, most effective technique after a year or decade. Don't care if you're purple, I viewed a BJJ class (Gracie Barra), where the pissed-off instructor was teaching the darce, and many upper belt students couldn't get it right at all, it was awful. The instructor was beside himself. I am a senior old-time seasoned blue belt, and I master the darce better than these shallow purples of that class. I just did my homework, train, drill, and roll to darce. *Over here, our upper belt are super-humans. One day, I caught my instructor with an americana. My instructor NEVER taps. So I yanked the americana thinking, I never get it right on him, so let me jack this one. I heard a pop in his arm, and yell, you ok coach?
