Archeoligists found numerous spent rounds years later half buried on the original firing lines. The right flank where Durnfords native rifles were positioned was far too wide and had to fall back allowing the zulu left horn to push through. Also the firing lines were too far apart or thinly spread. The combination of these facts and the determined forward attack by the central Zulu loins made the whole British line fall back onto the camp. The right came around the otherside of the mount and attacked the British rear. A very deadly ending for the 24th Foot old boy.

@@aidanjoyce3248 Correct, they were too wide and forward from the rest of the British defenders. They had to retreat back towards the camp before the Zulu numbers engulfed them.

I think it was the next battle where the archeologists found a bunch of bent screws. The lids of the wooden ammunition boxes were fastened down with screws, and the soldiers had apparently been just smashing the screws out with rifle butts.

@@mitchellminer9597 The next battle you refer too was the defence at Rorke's Drift. I would assume that the ammunition boxes would have been hastily opened as you mentioned, with rifle butt or bayonets at both battles. I was referring to the spent Martini Henry shells already discharged around the firing line at Isandwana.

@jckoibra2662 They using using Martini Henry rifles standard issue to British infantry of this time period 1879 the Anglo Zulu war. Except the rifles used in this scene are carbines

@sasquatch_reporting The rifle was the issue, the carbine was only for artillery, engineers, and cavalry. I mainly meant that the film makers clearly could only get carbines instead of the rifles.

I believe you are correct Sir. Not sure if it was from dirty powder, not cleaning weapons or just in the field the guns got dirty, hot and filled with powder residue and led to disaster. Not many weapons keep working properly when extremely dirty like the modern AK47 that is Unrivalled for Functionality in combat conditions. Maybe a little sloppy but they work regardless and that is why I own a couple of them in PURE RELIABILITY!

I like how they formed their lines but they lack of infantry, and bullets and number of men. When the zulus came close they could've formed a last chance firing line at the camp instead of 2 lines it will be multiple lines at once.😮.
