These are the same interpretations I was given in the 1970's while studying Shotokan. Trying to make sport Karate movement into self defense applications is not worth the effort. Go back and purchase Funakoshi's "Karate Jutsu" book reprint (from 1925). Learn the down and dirty, up close and personal fighting needed in close quarter combat. Leave all this other silliness for Hollywood. Wrist locks, arm bars, knee/elbow strikes, grapple, throws, chokes, stomping on feet. All in the katas.
@karatearmchairhistorian9825
Meh. I have two different reprints of Karate Jutsu as well the original Japanese version and very little of what you claim is actually in it. It is very fashionable to dismiss the Nakayama-style bunkai nowadays, but the truth is they do work as self defense applications, especially against multiple opponents. Now don't get me wrong, I am not "dissing" the Okinawan style close-combat applications, and they are certainly present in some Shotokan kata, but I think that the evolution of Shotokan from the 1930's to the 1970's was the correct path.
@bradlong7941
@bradlong7941 Год назад
@@karatearmchairhistorian9825 It was the wrong path. Your comment tells me you are another JKA hard head unable to see beyond block, kick, punch. How about getting off that armchair and study judo or aikido or ju jutsu for several years. All I mentioned in my post are present and will leap out from the exact Kata movements. Drop the stylized and the sport. Seek simple direct applications. Or waste your life in point scoring athletic competition with trophies, ribbons, and ego.

This is a must-watch if you want to appreciate why you are doing certain moves in the kata. Otherwise, you are merely doing karate dancing. After showing the martial applications of individual movements, the video shows at 6.10 the entire kata with the applications in the inset. Very, very good. Thanks.

I think for traditional bunkai (application of the Kata) it makes sense and you can see how the moves fit in a very basic way but for an application of self-defence it is not practical

Em um kata não existe só uma forma de aplicações existe varias tanto como demonstrativas como defensiva e claro que em uma situação de rua agente não vai fica parando como na demostração do kata tem gente leiga que não sabe diferenciar uma situação real de uma demostração a penas

Japanese version which is not realistic Bunkai. The version taught in shotokan is a sport version where the actual application is not shown.
@muhanaur8267

The karate movements are very good, but what I have felt so far has little to do with the moves with actual combat, in fact, because of that, in kumite, you should use the moves you have learned so that you have the reflex ability to apply these moves, you also need to get used to practicing them. facing attacks from street fights.

Well that's some interesting bunkai. The first pattern is completely ridiculous but it's all in good fun. I don't see the white black belt often so I give respect to his time on mat, but these applications are for teen karate, not adult.

This is as effective as a paper straw in a cup of water. Real karate is in your face. A mixture of grapple techniques and strikes.
@ankyspon1701
@ankyspon1701 2 года назад
Interesting analogy, as a paper straw 'floats' in water. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about, as the purpose of this video is actually 'very effective', ie, to help students to understand that a kata is more than just a set of random movements, and moreover, help them realise that when performing kata, they should consider every move they make as either an attack, a defence, or both at the same time. You should also know that the Heian Kata being performed here, is taught to students who may have only been studying karate for 6 months or less and this video is meant as an 'example', to show the student how those Heian Nidan moves 'could' be applied in a self defence situation, 'not' how they 'should' be applied. You should realise that the teacher in this video and most other senior Karateka could also show you, a multitude of different ways of applying the same moves in this Kata, to many other different self defence situations. Every move depends on your own perspective eg, is Age-Uki just a rising block, or an actual attack; a forearm strike into the arm, or into the face? Personally speaking, I think this is a very instructive teaching video, with some great video editing, one of the best presentations on RU-vid. You're watching it for free, so why not give the creators some credit for their level of skill and the time and effort it took putting this together. Alternatively, if you are a also a good teacher, then why not create your own video and show us what you can do, so we can all learn from your experience. Happy training.

Some of the comments written here are ridiculous and show that some people have absolutely no idea of the concept of karate or the purpose of videos like this. Yes it's simple, yes it's safe, yes it's staged, and yes, there may be better out there, but for some it is useful and informative. People have a right to an opinion but not to be rude. Those who post comments such as some of those here have clearly not learned that REAL karate is a way of life. Go study the Dojo Principles. If you cannot say anything constructive then say nothing.
@danielromero8999
@danielromero8999 Год назад
Good as a reference, but this is considerably basic. More importantly, the application of each technique must be effective even if it is a demonstration. Here you can see that many strikes don't have the proper depth, meaning the attacker doesn't even try to really hit the opponent. As a matter of fact, in the slow motion, you can see how the attacks stop well before reaching their supposed target way before the block is applied. Which takes me to the second thing I don't like about this demonstration: timing. Blocks continuously miss the attacks, which is a big no-no in bunkai. It HAS to be real, otherwise it's just a dance or a performance like we see in the WKF kata/bunkai competitions. Pay attention and you'll see how the attacker needs to stay still for a moment so the defensive technique can even start its application.

Yup, sport karate being passed off like real self defense karate. The principles of real martial arts are not really demostrated. This is the school boy karate introduced near the beginning of the twentieth century. The made to be safe kind. Note, there is nothing wrong with sport and competio n karate, as long as that's what's being communicated. There are too many blackboard that think they can protect themselves, but really don't have an understanding of the original types of applications and how to apply them. Everything can be done safely. You just need the principles, concepts, meanings of codifications. Most situations will be close quarter in your face. My issue, is th at of false sense of security. If this is the stuff you know, dig deeper, do some real research, you will be amazed on how you can use what you already know, if you had more knowledge and undetstanding.

those who are saying it's great video have no idea what those techniques are for, so this so called black belt instructor, those applications are totally wrong, not even one is correct, I can see this instructor never really practiced martial arts but just movements and created, base on those movements, henka or kakushi but it's not bunkai. I appreciate efforts of those instructions but first after all try to educate yourself and then try to show the others your knowledge, so far this video shows lack of knowledge

What do you suggest? How about you post a video of your own?
@selmas8257
@selmas8257 6 лет назад
What I suggest? Just visit me in my Dojo and I show you what really those techniques are for. In order to understand meaning of those techniques you need specific knowledge that most Martial Arts practitioners don't have. Martial Art is not for RU-vid, Martial Art is to practice in Dojo, you can try, of course to enhance your understanding of Martial Arts from RU-vid but you already should have some basic knowledge to be able to figure out if this what you are watching has some values or just movements without meaning

Mr. Lesski, I don't know who you are, and I don't care at this point. Simply debasing other people's work is not how I was educated. Post your own videos and let's see how practical your technique is. Many out there know the Fischer was a national and international karate champion. I haven't seen your name anywhere whether in budo or tournament karate. Let's learn to be humble and critque wisely.
@selmas8257

Dear Etienne, my intention is not to debase anybody and anything, I apologize if my comment sounds like that, I just want those who are really interested in all this to stimulate for explore the subject and that's why I still saying that videos of this instructor don't have too much values. I mentioned about knowledge we should have to be able to interpret martial arts movements, this knowledge is Tao philosophy, 5 Elements Theory (Wu Xing) plus Yin/Yang Theory and good expertise of Chinese anatomy. Each movement in kata is attack, there is no blocks in real karate, for example, we don't "block" kick with crossed forearms, it's one of the major interpretation of karate techniques by many instructors, who didn't explore karate enough and try to teach their own interpretation or their instructors interpretation of those techniques without understanding them because lack of their knowledge I earlier mentioned about. I believe in good intentions of those instructors but I just think they don't even know what possibly might be behind those techniques. One more think, just to your knowledge - I practice Martial Arts for over 50 years, I've been traveling for decades to Japan and China learning Martial Arts from the best in different places including Shaolin Temple. I'm a Grandmaster of two different types of Martial Arts. I'm also acupuncturist, I study anatomy, kinesiology and biomechanics for 45 years teaching all this for 38 years, I also learned and finished Shiatsu School, I'm an instructor of Qigong certified by Shaolin Masters and it's much, much more about me to give me rights to express myself. Believe me Etienne, I know what I'm talking about, you mentioned about being humble, believe me I'm much more humble than all those who post their videos and mislead people to wrong conclusions without understanding what they teach. Real Martial Arts is in Dojo not on RU-vid. Thank you for your time and by the way, you can see my videos on RU-vid because my disciples posted them not even asking me about it, they know my attitude towards those things and here I don't use my real name so you not gonna find anything under this name but if you gonna explore enough ☺ you definitely find me because I'm very well known personality and I'm in USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame. It was nice talking to you ☺ good luck with exploring and remember - Black belt is a white belt who never quit and success is the journey not the destination. And now my own line - "Sport karate is fighting for victory but real karate is victory without fighting" OSU! ☺
