It could happen, but it would require some unique circumstances and perhaps a judgment call by the score keeper. In 2015 WS, KC player hit an inside the park HR without an error. It happened because the Mets outfielder made a try to field a difficult fly ball that then deflected off his glove to roll some distance away from any fielder. KC player made it home without a play. It was debatable whether it was an error by the outfielder or not, but it was reasonable to say no. If there was a scenario where a collision happened between two infielders trying to catch a bloop bunt (say, 3rd and ss) knocking them both out of the play, and the ball then rolls into shallow left field, and the outfielders are deep for whatever reason, or perhaps not paying enough attention. The 2nd baseman was holding 2nd for a possible play there, and the pitcher chases the ball rather than holding 3rd. The batter rounds 3rd at full speed as the outfielder picks up the ball and throws home. The ball is not well thrown enough and draws the catcher off the plate, and the batter beats the catcher's desperate lunge.
@jefftX
@jefftX 2 года назад
What I learned from this: if the throw to first is overthrown, just throw the ball to home plate immediately.
@nacoran
@nacoran 2 года назад
That, and that speed makes players hurry throws and hurried throws often end badly.
@mandark8561
@mandark8561 Год назад
So you would just let the runner go to third? How about just make a halfway decent throw? It's extremely rare to overthrow the base that badly at the MLB level.
@jefftX
@jefftX Год назад
@@mandark8561 yeah I’d rather have them stopped at third than risk giving up a run on a bad throw to third. As long as you stop them On base you can get out of it.
@LucianDevine
@LucianDevine Год назад
@@mandark8561 Another question is how often do you think they practice a throw from the fence to third like that. Then factor in the chaos of the moment and the adrenaline likely running through their body, and it's VERY easy to miss your mark or overthrow.
@scottboyenga7532
@scottboyenga7532 2 года назад
I feel like if you’re the right fielder and paying attention, any time you see the hitter lay down a bunt you should start heading towards the foul line just in case this kind of thing happens.

Absolutely. One of my high school coaches always preached moving around and anticipating where the ball could end up.
@94n8dog
@94n8dog 2 года назад
@@jamesage24 absolutely. Every fielder of mine knew their situational responsibility before the pitch: ball, base, or backup. RF sees the bunt go down and they are SPRINTING to the right field line. Every base counts.
@MoMoMyPup10
@MoMoMyPup10 2 года назад
They were likely taught at some point along the way that _any_ throw to first base the RF should be moving quickly to the line, but especially for tough plays at 3B where the throw angle makes backing up that much more important. But the quality of arms in the IF at the pro level, and getting lazy, usually means throws to 1st will be caught, so why exert energy.

I agree at lower levels. At mlb level I'm not so sure. These are extremely wild balls thrown really hard, I'm less certain it would be helpful.

In 1972, I saw one of these in person in a game at Shea Stadium. Bud Harrelson laid down a bunt, it got thrown away, and he ended up coming all the way around to score. Game vs. the Dodgers. There was a runner on base, so two or three errors on the play (I'm not sure), two runs scored and no RBI's. Harrelson only hit about seven or eight actual HR's in his whole career, so maybe that should count as one, though obviously it doesn't.

@@johnboehmer6683 I thought Dennis was correct but didn't want to defend him because of my own perception of my baseball knowledge. So, first clip is from a game on September 23, 2017. Dozier is the man that laid down the bunt in the 1st inning. Scoring reads for this AB, "Dozier reached on bunt single to third, Dozier scored on throwing error by third baseman Candelario." Also, the only HR listed in the box score for the Twins that day reads, "Granite (1, 8th inning off Hardy 2 on, 2 Out)". Nothing about Dozier. I'll check the others as well just to be sure but the first one is definitely not scored as a HR.

In most of these, the ball is following the runner. Because of the bad throw to (or bad catch at) first, an error makes getting to third easy. Home only requires a missed catch. The weird one is the NPB pay from Japan because the ball is going ~toward~ where the runners are going, not coming from behind.
@jwilliams6002

Something is particularly funny about watching the first baseman right fielder absolutely sail the throw to third.

As opposed to Rick Ankiel, who couldn't throw 60.5' accurately, but could throw a strike from >300' away.

@@gregmead2967 I mean, some guys are doomed/destined to be outfielders.. but pitching is so stupid specialized to get the ball where you want it 96% of the time, you alter any one thing, like his elevation above the target, and its all worse than a stepson I dont have..

I knew going in this was going to be a bunch of errors. Having said that, it would have been cool if the guy on the Rays had lightning strike as he was heading for home, like "The Natural"

Not technically home runs. I'm not the first comment to say that, probably. Nevertheless, much more exciting than the over-the-fence home run which, despite the common belief, is really not near as exciting as a single, stolen base, and scoring from 2nd on a single. Another version would be a single and scoring on a hit in the outfield gap.

Sounds like you're a fan of the "dead ball" era.

@@keithhakanson7040 I probably am a fan of the dead ball era. When I watch tennis, I like seeing rallies, not single serve aces. Kind of the same thing.

More properly titled "defensive misplays on bunts" or "scoring from home on bunts"

All these clips are like: bunts to make it a tough play: Pitcher throws it away: right fielder gets it and throws it to third and misses: runner scores

I know they made it round to home on bunts, but in the stats, was it an in the park run, or is it he got home on two throwing errors, to first, then again to third base.

Don’t see many bunts anymore in baseball especially since the pitchers don’t hit anymore in the NL. Baseball used to have more strategy but I still love the game.
