The Maconnais is named after a central town in the region called Macon. This is a great region for value white wines. Only 10% of the wines produced from the region are red wines.
Maconnais has no Grand Cru vineyard site. It has 22 1er Cru vineyard sites in the region of Pouilly Fuisse. All other wines are basis Macon AOC wines or Villages wines. The general classification that applies to white wines produces in the region is Macon Villlages (meaning the grapes can come from any of the 20 specific villages or the named villages below). There are 20 specific village wine regions called Macon + a villlage name. Currently in B.C. Liquor stores now, I see some wines from Macon Lugny and Macon Verze. The other named communes, which are still villlage wines are:
Pouilly-Fuissé: probably the most famous Maconnais commune and the only commune which has 1er Cru vineyards.
Saint-Véran
Viré-Clessé - I love the wines from Bichot and from Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon
One thing I didn't mention about pricing. Since most Macon wines are village level, the price for some of the wine are higher to reflect the better producer. So when I am saying you should drink higher level Macon, I mean a better producer.
