Buried Alive - Avalanche accident caught on helmet camera

This is the footage of me getting buried in an avalanche in Verbier, Switzerland on the 28th of february in 2011. My friends spotted and excavated me within five minutes even though I was buried at a depth of between 1.5-2 metres. Luckily I was wearing the right equipment and managed to create an air pocket in front of my mouth by holding my hands in front of my face when the avalanche stopped moving. And YES, we have proper shovels, the guy digging with a ski is just a random guy who happened to ski past after I got buried.
Uploaded this for everyone to watch and learn. Stay safe friends!

Thank you Kristoffer! My husband ded under a big alpine avalanche with 11 other friends on 1990. Now, I know really what happened under snow to him. It was really difficult to me to see this video, but very important. Happy you are alive, happy today there is right equipment to create an air pocket in front of face. I never more went for ski mountaineering, nor ever in the snow (I raised alone our little girl, now excellent diving). But this year I'll come back with snowshoes. Thank you!

This run started on the summit above Vallon D´Arbi, on the north-west face down towards the moguls that you pass when coming from Lac de Vaux. There are a lot of good transceivers out there, the most important is that you use one with three antennas. Both me and the guy who performed the searching use Arva transceivers. Also don´t forget practicing with your buddies :)

This feels pretty bad, and to think that people died like this. I'm glad you're OK and that you you were equipped and prepared. I am not a good skiier, I can't even properly ski outside the slopes, but when I watch the beginning of the video, it does feel to me like you are are in a very avalanche prone situation. The snow is very soft and powdery, and you are skiing over ridges and breaking them.

Both actually. In the first slide, my feet were taken away from the power of the snow. I tried to ski out of it but it's not very easy when you're falling over rocks and cliffs. I eventually come to a stop, and my fall down the cliff plus the weight of all the loose snow triggered the second avalance, the slab avalanche, which was the reason I got buried. Double bad luck you might say..

Kristoffer, thanks for sharing. I was very happy to read your description as I was, indeed, very terrified when I notice the ski being used has a shovel (seriously that skier should get properly equipped). - Could you tell us if your group look up the avalanche report for the day, the snow stability, terrain (simple, complexe or challenging) and how big was the avalanche. These would be helpful information.
@jozelazarevski1
@jozelazarevski1 5 лет назад
@Kristoffer Carlsson, I'm glad you are alive and you shared the video with us. We all can learn a lot of this video. I instantly recognized the mistake you did even before seeing that there will be avalanche following up a few seconds afterward, just by carefully following avalanche courses and books, where they talk about skiing on a wind pilled up snow on the leeward side and crossing the deposited snow just like you did. That's is my point taken. My question: I ski with airbag as well. I didn't no notice you had airbag nor avalung. Now that you survived one avalanche, do you think it's worth investing in airbag and/or avalung? If yes. What airbag type: Traditional CO2 canister airbag that stays all the time inflated of air, or the new jetforce tech that deflates after 3 minutes with the idea of creating an extra air pocket. I welcome everyone to reply their thoughts as well
@charityrocks
@charityrocks 6 месяцев назад
Yes, I saw the mistake too right away. He had a need to carve fresh trail though. This is tantalizing for a lot of skiers. I live in the mountains and this is most common mistake. The need to break fresh trail. Make their own path. Drifts and ledges are danger! Need to be avoided always.

For anyone who doesn't know (or is just plain to dense to get it) An avalanche occurs when the snowpack - or the layers of accumulated snow - on the side of a mountain is in some way disturbed, leading to a fracturing of the top layer and a downward torrent of a large mass of the white stuff.
@DBoonful
@DBoonful 9 лет назад
Wow, hitting that cornice was either outright ballsy or you were trying mitigate the speed by keeping high instead of dropping the more obvious line which is a typical mistake that everyone makes when they are in a bit over their head -been there myself. . Glad you are OK. Speed is your friend in those back country conditions -you are blessed to live and learn. Great Video and this video might benefit someone in the future.

This mountain may not have marked slopes. I don't know for sure obviously, but there's HUNDREDS of people who go out and do this on a regular basis. There's also many occupations that require things like this, such as certain fields in geology and mountain surveyors. For all the armchair commenters - this video illustrates the UNPREDICTABLE risk and seemingly innocuous conditions which can precipitate burial. The fact the slop released is not obvious from the top. Instead, compliments should be paid to the uploader for investing in the right kit, skiing one at a time, with his safety minded friends and ultimately avoiding a fatality. Being dug out of 2m of avalanched snow (which sets like concrete) is testament to this. Thanks for sharing this.
