This video contains adult material, including harsh language and graphic descriptions of violence. The Chinese American Museum serves to preserve and share Chinese American history whether triumphant or somber. The Chinese Massacre of 1871 is a tragedy rife with subject matter that may be disturbing for some viewers.
Step into the past with a walking tour of significant sites of the Chinese Massacre of 1871. This tour was prerecorded and featured locations from Historic Chinatown and modern-day Downtown Los Angeles. The tour was hosted by retired City Councilmember Michael Woo and featured interviews with FCAM Board Chair Dr. Gay Yuen, Asian American Studies Professor Dr. Juily Phun, El Pueblo Commissioner David Louie, and historian Scott Zesch. Watch to learn about and envision the hidden, buried past of 19th century LA. This production was a part of the Chinese American Museum’s eight days of programming in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Chinese Massacre of 1871.
This production originally premiered on Thursday, October 21, 2021.

On 12/18/2021 my father was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal with other Chinese Americans that fought in WW2. Over 40% of the Chinese that fought in WW2 were not even recognized as US citizens because of the Chinese Exclusion Act.

Thank you for producing this historic record about such a horrific chapter in Los Angeles. We are all aware of past and ongoing violence against people of differing backgrounds, and yet this reminder of something most of us never knew about until your film underscores the necessity of teaching new generations about the levels of hatred in our society and how we can not tolerate such violence. Well done, and thank you.

I've lived in LA for over 50 years and only uncovered this part of history a few years ago. Thank you for bringing this to light CAM and everyone involved. Programming this week has been incredible.

I lived in LA's Chinatown for almost 2 years in the 70s and never heard of this event. I only learned about it this year when I did daily lessons for my company during AAPI Heritage month.

My ancestor had arrived in California at around 1861 or 1862 but not in Los Angeles, rather Salinas Monterey area, to fill the labor void as some whites had gone back east to join the Civil War. Hell had to pay when these decommissioned soldiers returned and wanted their jobs back. From this rose the Workingnen's Party.
