Burlington Northern, Metra E9 units at LaGrange, IL 1990

These are video shots of Burlington Northern, Electro Motive E9A's arriving, departing and passing nonstop through LaGrange, Illinois. The tape was recorded in August of 1990. By this time, the BN (now BNSF) was the last operator of the E-unit or "covered wagon." on the entire Metra system (the Chicago & North Western Railway had retired its E-units about a year earlier).
A number of things to note while viewing this video: the lack of ditch lights on the EMD E9's, how a few pedestrians, motorists and even a bicyclist show little regard for the two other "live" mainline tracks (with possible speeding trains). And speaking of speeding trains, watch how one commuter train blasts through on an adjacent track while another train is stopped with passengers detraining. Today, passenger and freight trains must stop before passing through a Metra depot where another passenger train is stopped for passengers. Finally, hope you enjoy the shot at about 8:40. 3 for the price of 1. Just "dumb luck" I caught that one! Thanks for watching!

My grandparents house was in Riverside I grew up looking at the E9 everyday and listen to them all day and night it was awesome to see when they were double-headed even triple and quadruple they must have been moving units around awesome to see the triple track everyday the awesome sound of the E9 is always in the back of my mind sometimes even when I sleep now I imagine being in my grandparents house listening to those E9 go past in the evening or the middle of the night Memories Forever

I've never been to the USA, but have become obsessed with watching videos of the E9's, especially the Burlington ones. The USA built so many beautiful streamlined diesel locos from the 1930's to the 1950's, but there's something indefinably special about the E series. They are more than just locos, they are moving pieces of design art

Hello! I'm in the process of making a video on Burlington Northern's suburban E-Units. Would you give me permission to use small, short clips from this video in my video? The video is for non-profit educational purposes, and you would receive full credit for your clips in both the video and the description. Thanks for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you.

@DaimosZ

Not to mention the three track raceway was still owned by BN so considering BN would have had next to no other uses for their E9 fleet in the late 80's/early 90's it made sense to lease them to Metra in exchange for trackage rights.

Wait, did metra own these E units, or was BN the last one to help chicago's commuter service.
@DowntownWithBrown
@DowntownWithBrown 4 года назад
BN actually operated these trains on Metra's behalf, as did the CNW for Metra's 3 Ogilvie lines. The ownerships were relinquished to BNSF and UP respectively in 1997 and 1995, and both continue to operate those lines to this day. That's the most likely explanation for why BN and CNW equipment were common on these trains even after Metra's founding.

@@DowntownWithBrown Thank you. Yeah, Metra even did a CB&Q heritage unit for the service they have given us since the beginning ti'l now and made F40PHM #211 the heritage unit. And now I am waiting for a CNW heritage unit/Illinois Central heritage unit because I live on the electric line.
