BN on Crawford Hill, March of 1994. The SD70MACs are arriving in numbers and will eventually spell the end of the SD40-2's and C30-7's as head end coal train power.
Videos are shot starting at Bellmont, summit of the hill, in and around the big cut that replaced the tunnel, and about 2 miles down the tracks to a favorite area of S-curves.
Originally shot on 8mm tape with a Sony camcorder.

I Always loved that MACs.. its music to my ears listening the horn, the engine sound, that particular sound when they're in notch 8.. i'm glad to see them here in Mexico when they were giving service here and i was 12 or 13 years old i think, since that moment i loved them so much :)

It breaks my heart that the mighty *BURLINGTON NORTHERN* merged with the Santa Fe. BN Cascade Green, with the white stripes and black tops, replete with the interlocking BN LOGO were simply spellbinding.

I loved the Burlington Northern - especially the original paint scheme with the black roofs from stem to stern. Read once in Trains magazine that BN was actually pro-passenger the short time they did operate passenger trains.

It's great to see the old SD40 pushers with their dedicated fuel tender attached.

Nice work here, great job. Gosh, I miss the BN, GE's, SD40-2s. Railfanning just not the same anymore.

All of the C30-7s went to Brasil, while some of the SD40-2s followed....amazingly some of the C30-7s still run in BN paint on the meter line, however all the metric C30-7s were repainted before regauge….

Beautiful compilation of videos that really capture the feel of Crawford Hill. This is one tough piece of railroad from both a maintenance and operational perspective. With over 100 MGT annually operating over this trackage through very sharp curves, it's a challenge like no other to keep in good condition. Thank you for capturing this for us to enjoy!

Part of me always wondered what today's railroads would look like if BN and Santa Fe never merged... I know at one point in time Santa Fe and Southern pacific were supposed to merge.

Love the MAC's and wish that they were still abundant as they were starting to show up back then... Would have loved to view this history in the making

Love the executive colors!! Too bad none of the SD40-2's didn't get repainted in that scheme. They should've kept both the SD40-2 & the SD70MAC as head end coal train power. Today, it's all ES44AC's & AC4400CW's as head end power.

So, those are SD40-2's and not straight SD40's? The porches seem shorter than the SD40-2's, but then again, no profile shots whereby you could really tell. Great video. Never been out past Dallas, TX.

Read in Wikipedia that Burlington Northern purchased over 800 SD40-2 locomotives. That's a clear indicator of the faith the road had in the reliability of these engines. Only the GP9 outsold it.

What's with the fuel car(?) between the tail end loci's at 5:40'ish? Some one said in the comments that they were the replacement models. Funny to see that tanker car in there w/ the same colours as the locis. Nice Vids. I think it would be a great way to spend some time. Sitting by some tracks filming the trains and watching the world go by. Thanks

+Gra Gor It's a fuel tender for the locomotives there's a few videos out there of trains with fuel tenders but they're hard to find.

why's the tanker in with the engines
@ictrains9731
@ictrains9731 5 лет назад
chuck timm Those are fuel tankers for the engines. I am assuming those engines sets are assign for helper engines and use more fuel and do not have to refueled until end of shift.

BN traveled across Wyoming without re-fueling to save on diesel fuel by cost differential with Nebraska. I learned this while at the BN shop in Lincoln for GE in the late '80s.
