probably the 30th video of axe handle finishing ive watched tonight lol i have a really old axe handle that was my grandfathers from germany and i cant make up my mind between raw flax seed oil , Boiled linseed oil, or danish oil lol. I went to your facebook page i cant believe how good of a job you have done on some of them. Any advice or tips?
Hi, I hope my video was helpful. If your goal is to retain some of the original patina on the haft I’d suggest a light sanding with 320 grit just to open the grain a little and apply Boiled Linseed oil. It will add moisture and some sheen.
Hi Sam, my website and Facebook pages both have lots of pics to see how these turn out. If you message me via email at axenutbrad@gmail.com I’d be happy to send you a few pics too.
Hi, you can burn a handle with the head on, but because the metal absorbs the heat near the head you’ll typically get a band of un-burned area just below the head. Remove all lacquer first
If you don't heat the handle evenly, you can also warp the living shit right outta it. Also the Watco Danish oil is awesome stuff and the finish is beautiful with a great grip, but it is kinda toxic. I'd use raw linseed oil ( not the boiled shit ) if you can find it.
Raw linseed oil? On an axe handle? Maybe if you're gifting it in six months and you have time to properly dry and treat multiple costs, just use "boiled" linseed oil instead. It does the same thing but doesn't take weeks to months to properly dry, hell even the "boiled" stuff takes a couple days.
