‪@LivingaSustainableDream‬ We finally removed an eyesore that has been on our property since we bought it, the broken down, derelict, outhouse. An impromptu act, scratched the service of a time period during the early 20th century.

Man pretty much messes everything up in this world, but he did get it right when he invented the tractor. Lol. Nice work, keep up the great content!

Outhouses are certainly practical. I never lived with one. I recommend reading the Humanure Handbook as a worthwhile read. When we decided to poop in water, life got very complicated. Look at all the issues both practical and legal with which we have to deal. I have separate plumbing for grey and black water in my off-grid place...a considerable simplification. I would certainly be composting the black if only my wife would agree.

@Steve, I agree if the outhouse is made correctly. This outhouse was not properly designed. In North Idaho some who make compost use a two earthen hole under the outhouse. Once the hole is filled, it composts while the outhouse building is slid to the adjacent hole. Once that hole fills after 2 years the previous hole is dug out as compost and the outhouse is slid back over that hole while the adjacent is covered with soil and allowed to compost for two years and back and forth it goes.

Something we should have done a long time ago. As you can see, this one wasn't designed very well. Some designs put the outhouse on a sliding system. Once the hole is filled the outhouse is slid to the second hole and the open pit is covered with about 6 inches to a foot of earth. Once the second hole fills up over the course of a few years, the first hole is dug up as compost and moved to the trees in the orchard and the outhouse is slid over to the primary pit while the second pit composts. This outhouse barely had a single pit.
