Burnley Newsreel 2016
Introduced by Burnley Chairman, Mike Breeze and featuring the news and events in Burnley and the local area that took place between November 2015-November 2016.
The film starts with Radio Lancashire’s Graham Liver and his fund raising campaign for Children in Need. In February 2016 saw the opening of the new Prairie Sports Village. Towneley Park Charity Fun Run and world record attempt at Rounders.
Easter Monday saw clog dancers at Queen Street Mill and the steam engine running.
Model railway show at Brierfield
Burnley Member of Parliament Julie Cooper pays tribute to local Burnley veteran Harvey O’Hara who took part in D-Day in 1944 and is presented with a medal in a presentation at Towneley Park.
Seedhill Athletics stadium at Nelson and Edward Lee of the Burnley Express takes part in a fund raising event to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Leeds-Liverpool canal.
In late April 2016, snow arrived on the 29th of the month.
At Burnley Town Hall, Burnley Football Club were honoured and the players led by manager Sean Dyche are interviewed by Alistair Campbell and Burnley Film Makers Carl Stredder followed by a bus tour of the town and thousands of cheering fans.
In May Padiham held its Whit Walks with Padiham Mayor Councillor James Kirk.
In Burnley, Mayor Jeff Sumner was appointed and held his ‘Mayor At Home’ event. On the 27th of May, Canon Peter Hapgood-Strickland from St. Andrews church talked about a new book ‘Journeys Of Faith’ written by authors Abdul Ghaffer and Nikki Davies which discusses eight different faith communities in Burnley.
Following the Family Fun Day at Towneley, Padiham held its annual Padiham On Parade weekend and at Towneley the ASDA Foundation 10K run took place.
Gawthorpe Hall was undergoing restoration work and Burnley Film Makers Carl Stredder and Keith Widdup talk to Rachel Pollit about the work going on.
Ruth Nutter talks about her son and local farmer Andrew Nutter who died from cancer in 2009 and since then an annual tractor run through Pendle villages takes place in his memory.
The canal Festival took place at the Weavers Triangle in Burnley.
At Burnley Library, a presentation of the EU Flag was awarded to Burnley Council and featured civic dignitaries.
Trouble at Mill - Queens Street Mill was closed on the 30th of September due to funding cuts.
Newsreel 2016 ends in October 2016 with the 200th Anniversary of the opening of the Leeds Liverpool canal section through Burnley, featuring the barge ‘KENNET’ with Lynton Childs and Jeff Sumner, Burnley Mayor.
