Burnley are paired against Preston North End in the northern area final of the Sherpa Van Trophy at Turf Moor, this is the first leg with the return at Deepdale the following week.
Preston are a division higher than the Clarets and a trip to Wembley awaits the winners of the two legged clash.
Burnley are just glad to be still around having avoided relegation to non league football the previous season.

Commentator makes a great point. In the eighties umpteen players moved around the north west town clubs having a season or two at each. At Bolton I remember being gutted when George Oghani went to Burnley , but we got John Thomas from Preston to replace him. A lot of the club's were in the old 3rd and 4th divisions at the time, great days to be a fan, very little travelling and good crowds, and the game simply wasn't about money and celebrity players and managers. When neil Warnock brought Scarborough into the league in 87, he said ," If you'd have told me we'd be lining up against wolves , Burnley and Bolton next season, I'd have thought you were off your rocker." All 3 of those clubs have had tome in the prem since, European football, etc, but may have lost something of their essence as a result. Much preferred it back then, familiar players, proper grounds, and real football. We play in a box in horwich and might not even start the season at the time of writing. Great videos for a bit of misty eyed nostalgia. Most teams would've wanted Big Sam at centre half too...absolute monster.

@@1990-t1j Since that last post, you will have seen we are now sorted and hopefully " early days" championship bound. Would expect you to go back up, but with a bit of luck can renew on pitch acquanencies soon. Pity they dont do the " Lancashire Manx" trophy these days. Great little pre season do for the clubs round here. Good luck Clarets.

@@johnathanryan2117 Good luck to Bolton, too. I think you'll get back up soon. Did you know that this is the first season since 1961/62, I think, that Burnley, Blackburn, Blackpool and PNE have all been in the same divsion. Back then, of course, it was the top division. So many derbies this season. The above, plus Wigan and Huddersfield, although they're from the other side of the Pennines. Regards

Yes indeed, all the more reason for us to get back into that mix, thats tge sort of company we " belong" in, massive history of fantastic games against those clubs you mention going back over 140 years in some cases. Was a season not so long since when with the exception of PNE, we were all in prem. Cant beat local football and big crowds, big occasion games. A game against another traditional rival always has a nicer feel to it. Good stuff.

@@johnathanryan2117 I'll look out for your results. I always reckoned that the best fans of the area were our two clubs.

I think the English should invite Scottish and Welsh sides into the Football League Trophy. This is the old Football League Trophy, under the sponsors name. The Scottish already have English, Welsh, Ulster and Irish sides in their Scottish Challenge Cup. It would be great fun to have all Scottish Premier sides who have not qualified for Europe, plus a selection of Welsh Premier sides into the trophy. This would add cross border banter to the trophy. The Scottish sides could be in the Northern section, and Welsh sides in the South. Imagine games like Hearts V Sunderland, or Aberdeen v Blackpool, or Hibernian V Carlisle United. It would be fun. I do not support merging the Great Britain Leagues, but I do support cross border cups on top of European and domestic soccer. If the English really want to help Celtic soccer, give us cross border cups on top of domestic and European soccer. Do not steal our biggest sides. Thanks for reading. Diolch. Merci. Hope you enjoyed reading my post. Up with Scottish soccer. Good video. Aberdeen play Burnley in the Europa League a few years ago. -
