OOF. Burnout is so real. Recognize when you're starting to feel it, address it, and do something about it. There is a reason i say: Take care of yourself, be kind to yourself, continue to work hard, and all that good stuff. The first two things have to come before "continuing to work hard."

Rachel! Consider maybe the sluggishness & low-mood is related to living by yourself now??? Meaning you would get "pick up energy" from being in a house with others? And you don't get that anymore? - If you agree, you gotta, somehow organize more random social "energy" woooo. Haha just one possible diagnosis!!! ❤️❤️❤️

I'm an obgyn and I remember the burnout I felt after 4.5 years through my residency and never taking a day off!!! Took a toll on my mental health and attitude... I finally took a good time off and revisited my worthiness and goals and finally got back to work and presently am training in gynecological endoscopy and loving it. You will be an amazing and dedicated obgyn.. saving mamas and babies. Best job ever!!!

Hello Rachel, I have to say something. As a 4rth year medical student who have been through ALOT of studying + had my STEP1, I have found that what really kept me going is that I enjoy the little time that I have ( Eating, commuting, working out ..etc) to the greatest extent so that I have a semi work-life balance that can keep pushing me forward. I am not in a place to tell you what to do but I really noticed that you always study during times that you simply should not. Its not healthy to put yourself in this atmosphere. I hope that you regain your power as soon as possible and keep going 🙌🏻

I agree it's important to enjoy off time, but you may not know everything she does on a daily. The videos don't actually cover her whole life. It's fine to say what you did and how you think it helped you, but it's best not to tell adults what they should or shouldn't be doing in such absolute terms.

@EJF0085
@EJF0085 3 года назад
@@saad1161 yeah, it's the, "I'm not in a place to tell you what to do, but you absolutely shouldn't do this." Which is literally telling someone what they should or shouldn't do... You're just prefacing it with saying that you aren't in charge of her. So, in that spirit, I'm not your boss, but you should never give advice on the internet, Saad. Because I told you I'm not your boss, I'm not telling you what you should do now. Problem solved.
@saad1161
@saad1161 3 года назад
@@EJF0085 So basically advice doesn't exist in your dictionary, Im either telling her what to do which is "bossing" or not telling her what to do which is "bossing". I can't argue at this point its just how you think.

I hit burn out trying to get my GPA up to get into nursing school . I sat in my chemistry lecture sobbing because I was asking myself what I was doing here . I’ve spent 6 years doing pre reqs, & I’ve come to that point that I just can’t do it anymore. I have very bad anxiety & depression, I was recently diagnosed with a seizure disorder, which has affected my memory. I can’t work, I don’t have the attention span or the memory retention to do school . The light bulb burnt out for me . It hurts . I feel so disappointed & I feel like everyone else is disappointed in me, but I have to focus on bettering myself & my illnesses . Burn out makes it worse . I truly look up to how hard your working . Your dedication & persistence is incredible! I can’t wait to see you finish ! Always sending you so much love ❤️

hiiii herd, rachel asked us to comment something (hard?) that we're going through so here goes: because of strict lockdown in my country, I haven't seen my parents in over a year (15 months to be exact). But, thankfully, I'm not entirely alone, I live with my younger brother who's also a medical student... however, for many reasons, he's entirely dependent on me. Waking up to an overwhelming amount of school work and a person who, with out your help, could really suffer, is extremely hard and mentally and physically draining. I think I'm doing an okay job taking care of the both of us tho and it seems like my parents are really proud of me. I'm hopeful that all of my hard work will pay off in the end :) good luck on your medical school journeys, guys.

I know so many people who are burnt out right, including myself, with school because of increased workload, more independent learning, and the mental health repercussions of an ongoing pandemic. Actually due to this lockdown currently going there in my place, our schools are closed and tons of zoom meeting, assignment, homework, I just gave up on all these things for a month and started watching some "dramas & webseries" but now I'm trying to get back at my track and routine to study but finding it really hard. I am so sad. I feel as though I am lost and floating. That is a really scary feeling. I feel as though everyone in this community knows what their goals are and knows where they are heading but I don't know that. All I know is that I want to help people. That uncertainty makes studying and persevering and just constantly working so, so, so hard. Every Friday I come to this channel and watch these videos and sometimes it lifts my spirit and sometimes I am just in a hole but if Rachel or anyone reads this, they should know that this channel and this community helps get through another weekend, when most of the time I don't even want to leave my bed.

You are far from the only one who does not know what their exact goal is. There are so many that are just like you and even those who do may not be as happy as they might have thought after they get their goal. I finished my software engineering degree a few years ago and I thought that getting the jobs I did as a software engineer would make me happy. That thought kept me going through my first undergrad... it wasn’t until I got those jobs that I figured out that my priorities were wrong in life and that I needed to help people more directly. Now I am one year away from graduating with a biology premed degree. Where I’m going here is when I had my revelation I felt lost, hopeless, useless, depressed and like my whole life centered around making a company rich. I had no clue what to do I had no goals and I didn’t know who to talk to. For me what helped was falling back on my support system. I never had done a good job communicating any of my emotions to my friends and family because it felt so hard to me to do so. However once I did they were able to help a lot. They helped me figure what I really wanted in life and they are the reason that I am where I am today. I couldn’t do it without them. Find a support system! It doesn’t have to be your family, it can be friends, mentors, professors, therapist, this community etc. Most importantly don’t give up you can do this, it will get easier and the world is lucky to have you!

since we’re sharing (i realize i’m a day late, yesterday was rough), i was recently diagnosed with IBD (crohn’s disease specifically) around two months ago. i struggle with fatigue and waking up everyday tired no matter how much sleep i get. i love school. i love learning. i love that one day i will be a doctor. but sometimes the fatigue really gets to me. and it makes me frustrated that i’m constantly tired no matter how much i sleep, or try my best to control my stress so my symptoms don’t flare up again. i spend everyday worrying that the next food i eat will cause me pain. it’s taking it’s toll on my sanity and sometimes makes me feel so unmotivated that i don’t want to get out of bed in the morning. but i keep trying, and i’m talking to my therapist about it and that’s really helping. hopefully my recognition of what’s happening and starting to be more kind to my body will help me. thank you for sharing rachel and for allowing us a space to share. sending so much love as always💖

I can't even imagine med school, nursing school is hard enough! I was so burnt out last week I was a mess! Took a day for personal care and tried to not even think about school. It helped but it stinks when you have so much studying to do that you feel like you can't afford a break. Life is a juggling act. Thanks for being real with us. This was a great reminder for me too. I'm in my last semester of nursing school, about to graduate in May, and I also have my boards coming right behind that. NCLEX is our step 1, I feel like. It's the exam that makes us nurses. It's scary and stressful. I too needed to check in with myself a lot more this semester, because I feel the stress of persisting and finishing well and graduating and taking my boards... it's a lot. I don't feel like I'll feel totally normal until I take my boards, either! You already know this, but I'm reassuring the fact that you are definitely not alone in your burnt feelings!

I always see so many youtubers disclaiming that they are so lucky to have the life they have and have such a good life when talking about their struggles. Rachel, you are allowed to struggle and don't need to justify yourself!! You have every right to feel how you feel and it's totally valid, even if you live a better life than others.

Starting to get burned out as we approach the end of the semester and one month away from Step 1 dedicated. I'm burned out, but I always worry that I'm not doing enough to create a strong CV for residency- I vent a lot, but this is one of my underlying fears. At this point, I just want to be motivated and strong enough to finish off M2. Thank you for being so open and transparent about your struggles- other medical students feel the same way!

I feel like I have to say this and hopefully, you might benefit from hearing it so: I'm so grateful for what you're doing. All the long hours, sleepless nights and constant tiredness. You are my greatest example and this is not meant to put any kind of pressure on you. I see you doing what you love in every single video and working very hard for it, never giving up. You are amazingly strong and that is why you will make a great physician. It is all worth it! I only hope to be as strong and determined as you when working towards my own goals. You constantly think about helping people and we, your subscribers, are all people. So thank you ;) Good luck with everything, you can do this.

Thank you for sharing, Rachel. I relate with you that it’s better to repress the feeling of being burnt than to acknowledge it, because acknowledging it would make it real and as medical students, we don’t have spare time to acknowledge these kinds of things. However, it really is important to take care of yourself, and do small things that make you feel better everyday (ex: taking a shower, fixing yourself, etc.). The journey that we have is a lifetime commitment, so you have to always put yourself first because you cannot take care of others without being able to take care of yourself. You’ll get through this, i know you can. :) if right now you don’t feel like doing anything, it’s okay. Re-commit when you know you’re ready. Thank you for being such an inspiration to me and a lot of aspiring doctors. ❤️🤗 we’re fighting with you.

I can definitely relate to the way you are feeling right now! I am a medical student from Germany and I took the first "Staatsexamen" (state exam) last fall (it's one of the biggest exams in medical school in Germany) and the month before were the worst of my life mentally. I struggled a lot with concentrating and my body reacted very badly to the stress which stressed me out even more. But as you said, it is all worth it in the end. But still, in the situations where you are just sitting in front of the massive amount of material without any time for month to do something else, you just feel miserable and burnt out. But you're doing very well and I look forward to seeing you succeed in the end!

Also, I thought I’m the only one who sings “ I don’t wanna do this anymore” everytime I’m so done with the stress&study 😂😂

To anybody that ever comes back to this video …. We will all get through the journey together. I am a Pre med student studying biomed and going into my sophomore year of undergrad. I also am in a position where I have to work 50+ hours a week in order to live. I am working towards becoming an army officer through my schools rotc program which means trying to make it to my morning workout everyday. Some how , some way . I’m managing to stay afloat. I said all that to let anybody know that if you ever feel alone … you are not. Keep pushing , get through the hard days and in the long term everything you are working towards will pay off.

i'm a current pre-med track student that is in the midst of transitioning into the summer of my technical second year of college(i took summer classes and was moved up a year due to credit overload) and i'm so close to failing a main class for my biology credit and i really don't want to take it again since it's hard. i'm also afraid to tell anyone about it because the most they'll tell me to do is work harder and i can't really do much more than i am currently and it's stressing me out really badly. your videos always help me push through though, and i love the messages you send in every video; they're all raw and unedited clips and i love seeing how other people are in similar places to me right now. love you so much rachel!!!

(disclaimer I'm only a first year pre-med student) One of the greatest pieces of advice/ revelation that was told to me recently was that regardless of how you decide to allocate your time, efforts, or lifestyle... stress will find you. As pre-meds/med students our stress lies in our studies however those who are not in college/are solely parenting etc allocate their stress to their social/ family lives. We will always find a reason to be stressed... so choose to embrace this!! How would you rather be stressed? There will always be ups and downs but stress results regardless of how we choose to live our lives!! (IK this sounds dire but it seriously helped me gain perspective!!)

Our school had an emergency network shutdown, pushing vacation an extra week. That put me all out of whack and I am just trying to stay on track for the same reason but different direction. I want to be an L&D nurse so much. I want to be there for those special magic first moments as well as for Mom's who have traumatic birth experiences so they know, its not glitz and glam and no matter how you get to your happy we can get through it together. No mom has to suffer alone in silence. I want to bridge that gap.

I still have a couple of days to do it, but I feel very overwhelmed all of a sudden. I don't think I have ever asked myself how I am doing and can I do something to make me feel better. Like a 1 one 1 session with me. I like the concept. Now let's see if I can make it a part of my daily routine. I watched a greys anatomy episode that focused on starting new. You/re my hero Doc. I could and would never do this type of mentoring on this or any platform requiring me to be in the spotlight. My favorite quote and military doctrine states they are quite professionals.
