Burrowing Owl populations are plummeting all across Canada and these iconic ground-nesting owls have disappeared from vast expanses of prairies where they were once common. Fortunately, the population is thriving in Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan. Not only is the native prairie in Grasslands National Park protected, but it also supports several thriving Black-tailed Prairie Dog colonies. The prairie dogs dig burrows, which the owls then use to nest in.
The owls are further supported because Parks Canada started a supplemental feeding program several years ago. In addition to the naturally occuring grasshoppers, which the owls forage for on their own, dead mice are provided on a regular basis at each of the nesting burrows. This additional and nutritious food source has enabled the Burrowing Owls to raise larger and healthier broods.
