Solid review. Ive heard applying a bit of wax to your shoe’s toe cleats gets rid of the clicking noise. Ive been riding on step ons for 3 seasons and picked up a pair of step on X’s for my orca and I’m super impressed. Very responsive either way but the X’s give just a bit more agility. Wont consider ever going back to strap in binding after this. They just work!
Thanks Justine & Nate! I’ll have to try that. I read that the X’s are more responsive because of their carbon-blend high backs. Is that what you mean? And awesome, a step on convert😁 if I get a second pair of step on bindings for my other board, I’ll probably do the same
Ive owned a pair for of step ons for a whole season, riding multiple times for longer trips( I’m in Australia where snow is super far away) and they’ve been fantastic, you nailed all the concerns people had and i can confirm the review you gave was entirely accurate, well done for the comprehensive review, you’ve earned yourself a new sub! WELL DONE
These are total game changers for fellow east coast riders. With 750 vertical feet in PA, I never realized how much time & effort was wasted sitting and strapping-in 30x per day for a 2 minute run. Now I take shake my head while clicking-in as I skate past all my former strapping spots. First handful of times was a little rough with leading pinky toe pain (top of foot), but was able to work through that and it's gone now. If I head back to Whistler for some top-to-bottoms, I may take some strap-ons as a back-up or to alternate days with; never again on east coast though.
Btw, u can get into the bindings while sitting down. u have to flex your clipped in boot up while pushing down on the other foot or you can dig your heel into the snow a little and click in :)
I bought the step on's with photons in the end of last season. Had a change to ride them out a good couple of times with dannydavis deep thinker and can say it is my dream setup and have not been waiting a season to start this much over the years. The setup is sort of saying very skatey and responsive, witch is perfect for me being an old skateboarder. I am amazed that this system has not blown up yet in the user market. Thanks for making these vids to spread the word of this awesome system.
Hey kikkihiiri I really appreciate your comment😊 I hope my videos spread the word too! I wanted to answer all of the unanswered questions that held me back from buying the system, only to realize (after buying it) that it’s awesome and reliable. It’s so convenient and time-saving. I’m glad to hear this is the most excited for a season you’ve been in years and that you’ve got your dream setup now😁 hope you get to enjoy it soon!
Too many purist holding back with their skepticism. I picked this up beginning of last season and the responsiveness of the locked heel back is amazing for my aggressive riding style. I love cutting big fast carves and slashing. Maybe cruisers would want something softer with traditional straps, but I couldn't get enough of it.
In 1998 or so I bought the Step IN set. Rode that until about 2017 when I moved most of the way across the country. I now ride the Step ON with photon set. I will *never* go back to straps if I can help it, just get so much more riding done with the Step systems. *note: I'm 40, ride mostly groom and powder, and not super big jumps or park, though I am hoping next season to start * (this season is a write off for me, given my proximity to things and the restrictions in place)
Cool to be talking to a Step system veteran😁 how did you like the original Step Ins? You’re right, they’re such a time saver. Nice! Thanks for sharing your story! I’m trying to learn park riding this season. I picked up a Snowboard Addiction jib set to train the muscles. I’ll put up a review with results later on in the season.
@@gooz loved the og steps. They latched at the sides so were easier to get into after surviving the chair unloading 😃 The new setup feels more secure though, and the only downside is the release lever is sometimes hard to reach(that's mostly because I am fat and can't touch my toes though) If I ever make it back east again I hope to do direct comparison.
you can try a rolling slope if you can find one, they're basically treadmills of dry slope I tend to book in a few sessions each time before I go out somewhere with snow
I have recently bought step on boots and bindings. I don’t hear a clicking sound and I have started feeling really comfortable with the security. I always ride with the leash attached just in case but putting that on is a once only event. I would say though for the costs involved I don’t personally think it’s worth it and I’m just as content in my original set up. It’s worth noting that the step in bindings aren’t quite as adjustable as a regular binding for instance i ride goofy 50/50 15 degrees but I can only get the step on to about 14.5.
How come you can only get the step on to 14.5 please? Interested as I ride something like +30 / -12 (because one of my ankles is at an odd angle following a broken leg)
i've been using step on like over 2 years, the clicking sound actually doesn't bother me at all. I don't feel any loss of response even if there's gap, furthermore my parts are actually worn, but still same clicking sound and give me same response that I used this very first time. most of people think that clicking sound make less response, but technically not. well, they are actually not believing step on system because it's not traditional system like straps. here's one thing that if there's no gap between bindings and boots, it'll break the bindings all the time. that little space actually keep bindings alive. it is called free-play, simple science.
@@csmicha7 They first came out in the early 2000s I think but they discontinued selling them because one snowboarder died because of this mechanism by an avalanche but now they make them again. If I could I can even show you this snowboard and these snowboard boots
Heyyyy big snow represent! Good to see a youtuber that goes to big snow frequently like I do! Apparently they have step on demos at the shop, might check it out sometime
Heyyy Seung what’s uppp😁 maybe I’ll run into you sometime! Yeah to demo the bindings it costs $35 and if you end up buying them, your $35 gets applied towards the purchase. Let me know what you think if or when you try them out!
Step ons are by far the best bindings I have ever used. 2 seasons of ABUSE and they feel as sturdy as day 1. Pair them with a Capita Mercury and the mountain becomes a giant playground
Been riding these since public availability Nov 2 2017. Last season I rode 43 days before COVID-19 shut everything down March 15 2020. Never had or heard any clicking. Also check / adjust your footbed position to see if that makes any difference. I have multiple sets of these bindings on different board and would never go back to straps.
Hey Mark that’s awesome you’ve been riding them since they launched! Hmm I adjusted the footbed to where it’s marked out for my boot size but another comment by @Sugarbroz says the clicking comes from the toe clip-cleat gap which allows for flexibility
But I’ll play around with the footbed to see if it helps with the clicking! I’m considering switching my other bindings to step ons too😁 next week I’m testing the K2 Clickers to see how those compare
I have this setup and so does my cousin. My only issue is the boot. For some odd reason the bottom of my root foot always hurts but other then that i love this setup. My other boards have rear entry setups and the step on setup blow the rear entry setups away. Now if i could figure out the issue with my right foot.
Try getting a supportive footbed for your arch. I’ve found the standard footbed are a little too flat which can cause pain in your soles. Small investment to remove the pain and enjoy your day more.
Grab a can of minwax or varathane wood finishing wax paste from your local hardware store. Apply to toe cleats and loops and your clicking noise will go away. Reapply as necessary.
I am still learning to snowboard and I feel the strap in binds do not work for me as I have trouble getting control of the board. I have been looking for an easier way to get into my board will these help me.
The best bet is just step out forward. I don't find I need to twist in any way. Just pull the lever and step right out straight ahead. These bindings are great. I have had no issues and love the ease of use. Just tug your pants up and step in if you are someone who doesn't like the clip. I just don't use it and lift the pants up and step in, all in one motion off the lift.
Hey Tamir, I’m using the 2020/2021 Multicolor bindings in this video, ordered from Burton. Looks like the colorway didn’t make a comeback for 2021/2022
Hi Mark, what shoe size do you have in Vans and what size do you have in Burton SO Boots? With my last Burton Ruler Boots I had used the size 10.5 instead of 9.5 in Vans.
Do you ever have issues with the Boa loosening? Most do because of flexing from heel to toe and the heat in the boot and I would imagine this could be bad with step ons without a ratchet strap.
Hey James, I’ve used non-Step On Boa boots for a couple of years and Step On Boas this season and I’ve had no issues. I do hear that the loosening has happened for some people, but Boa sells replacement lace kits online.
Just wondering what size binding do you use because I am think of getting some for myself but I don’t know which size to get and I also have around the same size shoe as you do?
Yeah I took it to the terrain park on my Salomon Huck Knife tonight and it handles well! The Burton ads show park riding with the step ons too. It’s really locked in and responsive though (which I like) but if you like a looser more flexy ride, you might want to pick one of their more flexible boots.
A couple of years ago I had a pair of k2 boots that used a boa and half way through the season it shot and every time I carved on my toe edge it released has anyone that has been riding the rulers or photons has the same problem or do you thing it was a manufacturing problem. After that happened I have been riding laces but I like the boa please tell me what you think.
Hey Tristan I personally haven’t had any problems with Boa lacing. I’ve been riding the Photons this season and other Boa boots in the past and they never released on their own
Did you make sure to click the Boa all the way down when tightening? I’ll be reviewing the K2 Clickers next week and I’ll let you know how their Boa boots are
So the Boa dials can wear out especially if you like to crank them super tight. The good news is Boa has repair parts and most bigger shops should be able to repair that for you. the laces also wear out eventually. they can be replaced as well just need to know the lace length which is usually listed on the tongue of the boot.
Not that much more expensive than any other Burton boot and binding, and yes absolutely worth it. Literally get off the lift place your boot in and ride off while everybody else that got off the lift before you are still sitting on their asses trying to strap in. Now you're at the bottom, click, you're out. Jump on the lift and go again. It's that easy
Yo oyen11! Lol they were my favorite colorway of these bindings! Matched my board perfectly too. Plus they were offered in the male options and were one of the quickest to sell out, so maybe you’re using a male color😜
hey whats going on bro. on valentines day me and my girl going to big snow for our second time riding. im in shop they have union stratas and burton step on. which ones would u perfer for park free style. i been skateboarding my whole life and decided to try this out last week and now addicted lol. idk what my problem is but when i try to stop or turn i eat shit in the snow. i so used to stopping on a skateboard turning backside or lifting up my front wheels to drift the back 2 that maybe that habbit is messing me up on a snowboard.
Hey bro thanks for commenting😁 that’s a sweet date! I know a lot of people ride Unions for freestyle. I can say I’m excited to use my Step Ons for more park riding because of their responsiveness and they do save a lot of time to get more runs in. At Big Snow they offer test rides of the Step Ons so I recommend you try them out to help you decide! That’s awesome you’ve skated your whole life! Skateboarding can definitely help in learning snowboarding, but some things are a bit different. Think of stopping like powersliding, but you always lean into the edge (toe or heel) closer to the top of the hill. If you lean on the downhill edge, you’ll catch it and fall. Also, try leaning more onto your leading foot and treating the back foot like a rudder to initiate turns. That helped me fall less starting out. Let me know if these tips help!
Hey Mark! I just found a video by @The Midwest Shredder where he uses Varathane finishing wax on the clips and cleats and it works! He says snowboard wax works too and it smells less.
There are other videos of them used in powder. There is very little issue with powder since the mechanism to click in is not under foot. There is also 2 "clicks" in the heel mechanism. Both work, and the first is for if there is some volume under foot. The next click is what most riders want to click in to when there is not snow in your binding. You have to manage the powder on most runs, but news is you can click in standing in deep powder with little issue.
Hey Thiago they sell replacement pant clips here: www.burton.com/us/en/p/step-on-pant-clip%C2%A0/W21-210221020011SZ.html Did you happen to put your pant gaiter in the clip (along with your pant leg) instead of above the clip?
@@gooz yeah they are really not expensive, they could include an extra one with the purchase... I would recommend anyone buying step on sets to get some extra pants clips... it is annoying to lift your pants the whole day because of a broken clip and they are very inexpensive
burton is a trash company worst customer service, they get you to buy their gear but if a boot is too tight and you call them up they assume you want to return it.. my response was did i say i want to return it? but where is the modification department to help me fit in my boot better? there is no help at all they just say they cant help. greeattttt thanks for the help i will never recommend them now... my left foot is good my right foot where the tongue bends is putting so much pressure on my foot to the point its rolling my bone, i already heat molded and took the insole out, a little better with the insole out. which they didnt say that. they dont even help at all they just assume i want to return them.
Ummm did you see his snowboarding... he is ovi not a jerry and he is just making things easier on him. Plus he is most likely only doing this to review the product. 🙄
Haha you must be great fun on the mountain, thinking you're an elitist skier or boarder and everybody else has to go. Ofcourse being able to go down the steepest off piste mountains since you were 3 years old never being a noob at one point. Just share and enjoy together! I'm thinking of buying these because I'm 40 and still like to board but my body doesn't like the whole sitting/kneeling down ritual that much anymore, not because I don't know how to use straps. But once you outgrow puberty you'll understand this better (I hope atleast)
