Years ago, my grandad plowed and disc his field preparing for planting. It left a lot of rocks on the surface, so I said something about running a roller to bury the rocks. He chuckled and told me "you bury a rock around here and 10 rocks will come to its funeral." I do like the way that soil cultivator leaves it. Thanks for sharing.

That is one impressive seed bed even with the very dry conditions. It seems we're all reluctant to give in and listen to our wives and just try their suggestion only to regret we didn't think of it ourselves. Needless to say if you keep this up you'll give Pete from GCI Turf a run for his money with the new content and planting much bigger yards. Hoping those seedlings can mature fast enough before your first hard frost. You already put down the granular starter fertilizer at planting time but if you can squeeze it in, I'd suggest getting some simple lawn solutions liquid extreme lawn booster 6-18-0 since that will go to work asap. I've tried lots of various liquid ferts and theirs is by far the best which I learned about from Ryan Knorr. The only caveat with some of that darker liquid fert with humic acids in is it'll clog the screens at the sprayer ends if not agitated enough. If you do watch Pete, you'll know his biggest pet peeve is getting your dirt right. I'm sure you have lots more tricks up the sleeve from growing up on the farm and you could even come up with a Words of Wisdom Wednesday series of shorts to honor your Dad! Keep us posted.

That new ventrac attachment is incredible! There is a similar attachment available for tractors called a “stone burier” or basically a modifier tiller. I first found the videos of the “rotodarian” brand and I was amazed! I would love to see ventrac add the capability to run more attachments on the rear of the machine with a PTO as I think it would make it much more attractive to most guys who already have a good fleet of 3pt attachments.

It’s high on the right because of the left side gear box weight. We have the same issues on our Harley takes when getting lawns flat. One thing you can do since you don’t have independently adjusting gauge wheels is just back one pass in one direction and then turn around and then alternate each pass. It’ll allow your right side deck to butt up to one another. You don’t feel it in the lawn but takes the ridge out

Beautiful seedbed with the cultivator. As to it running lower on the one side, I'd guess it's because there's more weight on that side of the unit with the pump being mounted on that side. It might be possible to fab up a weight holder on the opposite side to balance things.

I also try for as smooth a seedbed as possible, but sometimes less is better. A few clods left on the surface can help minimize erosion in the event of a heavy downpour, minimize soil crusting preventing seed emergence and prevent wind erosion while the new grass struggles to survive. I like the comment below about how when you bury a rock, ten more come to its funeral.😄

When I did work for a builder I used my land pride soil pulverizer as my final grade attachment before planting or laying sod. Worked great! Plus I used it on softball fields and horse arenas where there was hard pan soil but you got all those fancy attachments, ventrac, etc. I was a poor boy and at the time this was the cheapest attachment I could afford and it did great and faster than tilling plus the bigger rocks I could drop off at the ends then come back with the loader and use the rock for drainage. Y'all need some rain bad. We just had rain,1.25", come thru yesterday, might be headed your way!

Just catching your video. There is a company that makes a "soil conditioner" for the 3 pt on the tractor, that operates in the same manner as the new tool for the Ventrac. I don't remember the name of the manufacturer, but a selective search should yield the appropriate results. They made them for everything from compact tractors to larger tractors, if memory serves me correctly. Might be something that you could look into and utilize if they are available in your area. Todd

That area should be nice and smooth to mow. I'm a former grass farmer, current retired avid gardener, so I usually want more plant information than you provide. My patience was rewarded this time by learning about the new RTF fescue you used. Did not realize grass breeders had gotten that far with rhizomes, at least in turf type tall fescue. My solution to knit a fescue sod, which has become common, was to use 10% bluegrass. I still like some diversity in a lawn, though primarily in pasture. But that will come, at least some white Dutch clover will appear in your sward. And the RTF looks really promising as a base or mostly stand-alone grass.

That did such a great job on the seed bed. I too wonder why it wasn't rear mounted. I remember my first lawn I put back in college for a lady. She had a new house and all I had was a 6hp simplicity front rototiller. Ground was so hard and rocky, I spent hours just with a garden rake getting stones out, it did turn out really well though. So rewarding when I drive by to see the progress. Yeah you were probably late seeding, but like you said mentioned the weather was so dry, I would have done the same thing. Let the snow do its thing, and patch seed in the spring, or just wait to do another seeding next fall.

I’m going to guess your uneven height issue is due to that large gearbox on one side with no weight on the other, causing it to dig harder on that side.
