Bus and heavy vehicle hill climb compilation. Some don’t make it. Most are detroit diesel 2 stroke

All of the hill climb videos i could find from the last year and a half. Sorry if your bus missed the edit. This took hours to find all the clips and I’m sure i missed a couple. Detroit diesel 71 and 92 series mostly with a few other memorable vehicles climbing the hill too. It’s steeper in real life than it looks on video. The grade varies from 20-25% throughout the climb.

The musical Wanderlodges was the best thing I've seen yet. Nearly fell out of my chair with the Rocky Theme bus. No surprise Allison Transmission wins the day.

Scott, you should do a high-level overview video of the different Detroit Diesel series motors you work on, and what differentiates them from each other. This would help novices better understand their nuances, heritage, and plusses/minuses of each series.

Almost all the engines he works on are for the most part identical... 71 and 92 series engines are identical the 92 series is just has a larger bore. He does also occasionally work on a 53 series which is very very similar but smaller bore. The rest of the variations depend more on age than which series it is, so 2 valve, and old and new 4 valve heads, turbo or not, trunk pistons or crosshead pistons... a 53 series with trunk pistons can turn very high RPMS (not rated factor but it can do it with proportionally worse wear) crosshead pistons reduce wear and oil consumption.... etc... you can also vary the port height and positioning depending on the engine setup. Anyway so even though a ton of stuff is interchagable on these engines (well not between bore sizes for heads and pistons and liners but you get the idea all the other stuff mounted on the engine is).

Great video!! I must say though that my respect for the monsters of my childhood has grown exponentially. In my native hometown of Caracas, Venezuela, there was a hilly bus route with gradients steeper than this one, and which included a hairpin bend and another chassis-twister uphill bend to the right. Only one type of bus could manage it: early fifties REOs with gasoline Gold Comet six cylinder engines, which did it with full loads several times per day, every day for nearly 25 years. Unforgettable beasts.

Buses ain't no pushovers.😊 That Scenicruiser is a sweet looking bus. The Rocky bus nailed it for me....loved it. I hate the colour purple but it looked beautiful on that RTS Legend. I must say, and from a fellow bus man....that has to be some of the finest buses i have ever watched in a video.

That was fun. I used to drive a Terex Clay hauler back in the 80's that sounded like a lot of those. Also an old Euclid with a Stick shift and maybe one gauge. LOL. But the best were the orange Mack trucks with the exhaust that vented out the back of the bed. Very cool sound. Mack Motor.

That was fun....I remember here in Tacoma WA. I would ride with my Grandpa in the transit bus, he was a transit driver and this was back in the 60s with just a side mount strait 6 I think it was a gas engine.... and we would go down to Titlow Beach, but had to go another way out because the buses could not make it up the long hill. I have pictures of the buses somewhere...He would bring home stuff that he found on the bus all the time.... good times

Had a 6n71 in a gmc brigadier 8yd single piston dump air tailgate with 10 speed roadranger. Best advice I got was to " Drive it like you hate it!". So long as you dropped gears and let it scream it would climb anything. Lug it and you were in BIG trouble. Best truck I'm ever owned. Best sounding engine ever made. Dream ride would be a short GM bus with Detroit and a 10spd roadranger or a super 10 trans. I'd be in seventh heaven.

To my mind, a big drawback to the two stroke Detroits is that they have to be "kept on the boil". If the RPM drops much, the blower doesn't move enough air to keep producing power. In other words, they lack good "lugging" ability. A turbo 4 cycle Diesel, on the other hand, will produce good power when lugged down because boost comes more from exhaust flow than the amount of air being blown in, unlike a two stroke. More fuel injected means more exhaust flow to keep the turbo spinning at lower RPM. Try running down the hiway at 1200-1400 RPM in a 2 stroke Detroit!
