I have a ‘50 JD B. As I understand it, the more these tractors sit they tend to leak because of the type and how old the seals are in them. Most of them have started to breakdown and leak. It doesn’t sound like yours is that bad based on the amount you’re describing. Just depends how badly you want to tear into it. Maybe a good winter project sometime in the next couple of years…
I own 5 of these, still farming with them. Half throttle, full choke, as soon as it starts go half choke. Head gasket is easy, do the head when ya have it off. All simple to do. Good luck! Nice tractor!
Brush hogging with a 6ft mower is my favorite thing to do with my 52 model A. Second favorite is ploughing. The have such a different "grunt" to raw power it's awesome. Also, yeah from what I've heard, head gasket issues can be pretty common on older (original) two cylinder JD's. Bar's Leaks can sometimes work pretty well.
Thanks for your insistence on getting the A going. A lot of people would have given up. It sounds like the head gasket is no big deal, I never had to do it. My uncle put a power block in his A to raise the horsepower, that's alot more work. If you aren't going to run it again, just drain the coolant and the gas out for the winter. It can't leak what it doesn't have. If you have the room, put the A in your heated garage so you have it warm for working on it later.
I've got how-to videos on my channel that might be of assistance to you at some point. That A would spend a week with me and I'd have her tip-top shape for you. Good looking tractor with a lot of potentials, just needs a little love to bring it out. Great video, I sure miss my 1950 Model B I had.
That was a fantastic video I remenber all the work you had to do when you picked it up and repaired it and first got it running you also had a 9 n ford was nice see the old ones running you are good at bring them back to life thank you for sharing and your time great.
You can do as you see fit but always pick up the mower and move it a good ways from where it was sitting. Why? Because in a couple of years with the kids watching you hook up and start up the mower with the family cat under the mower you are not going to forget the look on the kids face when you do move the mower.
Starting tip now, and later after your head gasket replacement video, which was great by the way. Petcocks closed. Throttle just cracked open from closed. Pull choke out 1/2" at the knob. Antifreeze in the cylinders doesn't fire very well. You'll fix it later😉 Go easy with the first running rpm's. Huge crank, bearings, pistons... It deserves gentle warming up. It's earned it.🇺🇲💚💛🤣👌👍 1951 "A" in New Hampshire. please change all the oils and grease it. Help it last another 70 years👌
G'day from australia, good to see the john deer a still working, keep it going and over winter you may want to fix up it's problems so next year it runs better, please don't run it into the ground ( cheers mate ) and good luck 👍👍
@@HumbleAcres the two top links with the flat bar going between them that is up against your seat the u-shaped part bolts on to that center boat in that flat bar then the straight piece both on to your implement and then you would have a working three-point hitch that will lift just like your Ford or your Kubota
@@HumbleAcres no problem glad to help I'm a young guy too I'm only 44 and I'm having to learn all this on my own too I have a 1949 John Deere AN that was my grandfather's luckily there is some really good people on Facebook and I've joined some of them sites and they've been helping me out
my dad had one when i was a kid my mom had horses so they bailed their own hay also had a small farmall bailed over 100 acres one fiel down the road pure alfalpha to this day unfortunately all the fields are gone now full of housed the old cowbarn turned into an apartment complex old man died kids wanted the money not the land a shame it is when i was grown up it was pretty much like where you are all houses now
Great job. I’ve spent lots of time on a farm. Maybe get yourself some boots to protect your feet and ankles. It will pay off. I would leave the gasket open. Make sure it has oil and just run it hard. Probably fix that gas leak for safety. One spark and it could explode.
Nice tractor. Also I hate to be the safety nut job but my heart skipped a beat when you hooked up the PTO with the engine running. Sure it wasn't engaged, but God knows what could go wrong and suddenly it does and there goes your arm.
Can't wait to get my 1950 Model A restored. love seeing your john deere content, keep it up. just out of curiosity what is the serial # on the old A. Mine is #648212
Hello hmm what can I say enjoyed your video but if it were mine I'd repair it. Is it in the oil also the antifreeze? Time to take it apart regardless I know your capable. Besides would make some good entertainment. Have a good day
@@HumbleAcres they sell them on ebay. it's a piece that fits into the steering wheel which you can take off and insert into the flywheel and turn the whole thing counter-clock wise.
