Thanks for watching my video on how to sharpen a bushcraft axe like a pro. That's not to say that I'm a pro but this is how I sharpen my hatchets. I advise you to be careful to sharpen tools at the correct angle. My sharpening stone comes with 2 sides, a fine and coarse grain.

Hi everyone. There are several ways to sharpen an axe. I use a circular motion, however you could also sharpen your axe on a similar sharpening stone by driving the cutting edge toward the stone in a forward motion. There are rounded sharpening stones that are easier to use and can fit easily into any pack. I'll definitely be getting one of these soon. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy my video. Also worth mentioning that you can either use water or oil for lubrication.

Hi. Great video but I have one question. Why do you use the bit of lether at the end. I heard you said it’s the burr but I’m not to sure what that means.
@WildernessJ
@WildernessJ 3 года назад
Hi there. When you sharpen an axe or knife, there are small metal filings still attached to the cutting edge. It’s important to use a leather strop to remove this burr otherwise it can cause the cutting edge to become dull very quickly or to become chipped.

Husqvarna, as some will say? 1- use a file that is knackered. Then use in the wrong direction. You first should reprofile the edge then file the cutting edge. You can still see the shape of the nicks the edge is wavy. You need to find the correct angle of the edge. That looks very steep. Try looking at 'getting the hang of it'.

It would have been nice to mention what grits your stone is. "smiles" maybe use your other hatchet for chopping roots and keep from hitting your Husky to earth?
@WildernessJ

I think you're right. I should use my other axe for roots. I can't remember what grit I used when this video was filmed. I've changed whetstones since then. The answer to that is yes, but it won’t do a great job. You can use just about any oil to lubricate your sharpening stone whether it be olive oil, mineral oil, or even coconut oil. But that being said, certain oils will do the job better than others, and when sharpening a knife, the best oil that you can use is honing oil.

Not a bad video but definitely not like a pro. Your axe should not be loosely held for best results the only other thing I would recommend is to not short strokes across the bit as you did but to take longer strokes across the whole length of the bit from one end to the other. The way you were doing it could cause different thicknesses across the the bit that can cause the dents you started with. I will admit that you did get it very sharp.

I’m disappointed, I hoped you at least would know that you don’t need a collar guard for a hatchet. There’s no need for it because I don’t think you even could hit the axe hard enough to need it

Rowan Fernsler Thanks for your comment Rowan. You’re definitely entitled to your opinion but it’s a definite preference to have a collar guard on my hatchet to protect against overstrike which is bound to happen at some point. My collar guard has already protected the handle from chipping etc. Anyway, Happy Christmas 😁

Wilderness J merry Christmas to you too, not going to lie that collar does look pretty cool

A collar has nothing to do with how hard you swing a hatchet or axe, it's to protect the wood if you miss and hit under the beard.

Tommy Robertson I know that, I’m just saying that it is ridiculously difficult to need a collar on a axe. If you end up needing it that’s a problem because it means you’re hitting the wood wayyy too hard

Everyone's entitled to their own opinions. I go by the length of the handle from palm swell to beard, most the hatchets I have do have longer handles because I like a big aggressive swing.

I don't sharpen me axes, I keep them permanently sharp. Maintenance is key here people.

So are you wetting the sharpening stone occasionally? Complete novice
@WildernessJ
@WildernessJ 3 года назад
Hello Cormac. The trick is to keep the stone wet. This ensures correct sharpening without taking off too much material.

@@WildernessJ wow!!! What a swift reply.. like.. literally within minutes!!! Wow! Thank you so much. I'm gonna go buy a file, a round sharpening stone (hopefully) and leather thing (I wasn't kidding when I said novice lol). Anything else I need?
@WildernessJ
@WildernessJ 3 года назад
No worries. Once you have all those items, you’re good to go. The file is only necessary if there’s a lot of damage.

@@WildernessJ amazing!! I don't need the file then. It is a brand new axe, forged specially for me. Hasn't been used once. But it sadly isn't sharp either. So I can skip the file and straight to the sharpening stone? Amazing!
