Great to see the city getting behind these infrastructure improvements that'll make our city more viable in the long-term. Things like having good pedestrian and cycling infrastructure make measurable differences in attracting and retaining a young workforce, tech (and other) businesses, etc. If you think that walkways and greenways will "not get much use," I'm guessing you've not been using the ones we currently have.
3 lanes each direction with a resurfacing would be a great addition, looks pretty attractive but if flow isn't increased then it's just that.... wow the visitors who already don't come to the ballpark or visit downtown. 2 lanes each direction just isn't efficient.
You have to realize that without a good , vibrant, and strong infrastucutre the city would really be at a lost. when the population starts to go thru a growth spurt it really will help out
As a whole that looks really nice. I don't quite understand what's up with having the Strollway and S. Liberty have bridges over 40, though. Right now, they both go under 40 and the Strollway is a pretty steep uphill. Grading them both up enough that they go over 40 seems like a huge pain. Is that bridge in need of replacement? If not, that part of the plan seems sort of expensive and unnecessary.
They never seem to learn what happens when you build tunnels and blind walkways. I give you the Cherry St. tunnel and attached strollway (pre bus station), along with the sub ground shopping area (and ice rink) under the Cherry Marshall parking deck (which was only going to charge for parking until it was paid off circa 1975). Add to that being the largest applicant and receiver of HUD grants in NC (or anywhere out side of Atlanta), and you're just asking for it...
40 definitely needs a resurface and there are several streets in and around downtown that need resurfacing also ,this plan while nice, seems expensive, and the roads mentioned above seriously need help,I think the money would be better spent instead of all the walk ways and greenways that inevitably will not get much use, to use the money to improve all the bad roads as was done on Jonestown road
City of WS you need to read the reviews this plan is getting, the tax payers are not impressed at all. You need to restructure this. terrible ideas here. I have not seen one positive comment from the citizens on this plan.
