In this series we will discuss the day-to-day business of growing a #consultingfirm/office. This episode, "#BusinessConsultingServices: the Business of Running and Growing a Consulting Firm (Introduction)" is the first one in a series of videos/podcasts we will be rolling out as part of this series.
This series is not exclusively focused on #strategy boutiques. This is applicable to operations, technology, digital, implementation, organizational, human resources and other consulting firms. The principles apply to any consulting firm.
Trying to build a consulting firm is a daunting challenge, but through this program you will not be alone.
Cheers, Kris

I like how the timeline for each function was laid out that tells you what's the indicative timeline on building this function and whether should you start the function by just checking the x and y-axis , it makes it simple to understand and be comprehended.

I guess that is the power of analytical thinking. Micheal is on another level though.

"There is nothing wrong with pushing a problem in the future if you're not able to fix it now." (8:29) Very interesting. I do this intuitively sometimes. There are definitely limits, here, right? But I do like to let a problem sit on the backburner, if I feel a solution can emerge naturally from there.

Good judgement is needed, of course. Some problems become much worse if you do not deal with them right away. :-)

The principles taught in this FC video and the key topics (research, marketing, sales, delivery etc) are applicable to consulting and also to the broader industry, so go ahead and learn these skills!

Looking forward to learning from this new series. I'm certain it will benefit many people. P.S. I don't personally think people look down on consultants. At least not the non-confident ones. We may initially lack domain knowledge but it's our analytical capabilities, IP, tools, techniques, industry experience (many on multiple fields) and other resources that allow us to serve our clients. Again and again.

Hi Zaid, You are very right that not everyone looks down on consultants. However, for what its worth, when I worked in banking I did notice some people having a negative reaction when they found out I came from management consulting or when my collegues spoke about consultants helping the bank in a particular area. But a lot of it is because of a lack of understanding of a valuable skill-set consultants bring and an impact they can make given their superior problem-solving skills.

Content is great. Small suggestion to imrpove the audio quality (Sounds like you're in a empty room), pickup a directional Mic for podcasting and/or add some sound deadening in the room to stop the sound waves from bouncing against the walls.

Thank you, Alen. Your kind and thoughtful suggestions are noted and much appreciated. We do use professional podcasting equipment. The studio room is not completely furnished yet which causes the empty room sound. This issue will be resolved shortly.

From someone who launched a startup out of undergrad, I tell you it is a tall order. I wish you good luck with that, always a worthy experience; but I do suggest that you work in a consulting firm first. It doesn't have to be with the MBB but a top 15 consulting firm will work. Once you have a certain level of experience, network and resources, you can take the risk and trying to build one.
