Brilliant defense from Alapin: it's so counterintuitive to allow the pawn ending but it's just always about calculation. The brilliancies of the old masters are very underrated.
@fundhund62

It's extremely difficult to see. It's almost always a bad idea to go into a pawn down pawn endgame, because somewhere down the line, there might be some hidden tempo move or triangulation maneuver. And, of course, your opponent can press without risk for hours, if he pleases. I would have kept the rooks on, too.

Dear Daniel, I've been watching Firo's games live. I think he has this "Firo Effect" sort of similar to the "Fischer Effect". This is not sorcery or witch craft! He forces his opponents to make mistakes and when that happens he pounces on to finish them off. I really think he is the next big thing in chess. I've been a big fan of Magnus Carlsen. Magnus has been the torch bearer of the great line of Fischer-Karpov-Kasparov. I think Firo is even more exciting than Magnus. He is trickier. He is more resourceful. He is like Magnus and Mamedjarov combined. You know what I mean? Thanks for your great commentary by the way. You are my most favorite chess commentator.

Not sure what I loved more, your understatement of the century at 9:26 "not queen takes pawn because queen takes pawn here is checkmate - that would be sub-optimal" or the research that you made into Alapin and a game from 100 years ago! Amazing how relevant some of these positions can be even today. Shows a textbook can never lose its importance. Great video! Alireza... well what can be said. Apparently the 34 points he has gained in November is the biggest rating jump of any top ten player since Caruana in 2014. He's certainly not just a speed chess merchant - it's great to see the work he's putting into his classical game! I hope Ding qualifies from the Grand Prix (along with maybe Anish?) - that Candidates is looking very tasty all of a sudden!

thanks for a fine analysis of the subtelties of the endgame. A remarkable performance by Alireza, records are made to be broken. exciting to have a youngster with a realistic chance of challenging Carlsen. the way Grischuk got an easy draw an the almost dismissive win by caruan in the grand swiss would suggest the candidates can be as tough for him as everyone else but eventually he will get a shot. @@Gadgetify Magnus has "nothing to prove" is an amusing idea, given he has only beaten a disinterested, old Anand for the title; could not actually beat the very modest Karjakin in a classical match; could not beat a strong Fabi in a classical match; and among his peers by age, was outplayed by Nepo until Nepo's nervous breakdown. Carlsen in fact has yet to beat a strong contemporary his age in a classical match for the WCC, where that contemporary didn't collapse on stage. Carlsen has everything to prove.

@@sebszab76 I must admit, this had been mentioned by several people online. But I usually look up such endgames to see if there is a historical precedent. I don't want to brag. I am just a 2000 Elo player, but the moment I saw the position, Rf3 popped up immediately in my mind as the first candidate move. It's really not that difficult to see, that taking the rook leads to a quick draw. And after a while you realize as well, that the rook, if not taken, will always prevent any advancemnts of the king. Not that obvious, but I am confident I could do the assessment in a tournament game. Black wasn't under time pressure, he took his time. So I am actually surprised he did not find this move.

@rcallenberg
@rcallenberg 2 года назад
@@fundhund62 i must admit I am puzzled. Because to see, that the endgame is drawn when the rook is taken is not that difficult. There are not a lot of variations to calculate. There are two very easy to spot tries for white - pushing the g-pawn or trying to enter via Kh3. It nearly takes no effort to see this is draw. The third option, trying to enter over the other side with the king, the opposition is more difficult to see, but still a quite common pattern in pawn endgames. Now, I won't be able to calculate the draw in all possible variations if the rooks stay on the board, but it is quite obvious that the rook on f3 is positioned excellently, attacking the weak pawn on f2, supported by the pawn on e4, which can be easily defended by the king.

An amazing talent for sure but a not so small side note : These were the 20 games that got him over 2800 last month. 2 tournaments, The Fide Grand Swiss and the European team championships. 1 Abasov 2638 1 w +3.2 FIDE Grand Swiss (1) 27.10.2021 2 Swiercz 2647 1 b +3.3 FIDE Grand Swiss (2) 28.10.2021 3 Predke 2666 1 w +3.6 FIDE Grand Swiss (3) 29.10.2021 4 Yu Yangyi 2704 ½ b −0.9 FIDE Grand Swiss (4) 30.10.2021 5 Vachier-Lagrave 2763 ½ w −0.1 FIDE Grand Swiss (5) 31.10.2021 6 Shirov 2659 ½ b −1.5 FIDE Grand Swiss (6) 01.11.2021 7 Najer 2654 1 w +3.4 FIDE Grand Swiss (7) 03.11.2021 8 Sasikiran 2640 1 w +3.2 FIDE Grand Swiss (8) 04.11.2021 9 Caruana 2800 0 b −4.6 FIDE Grand Swiss (9) 05.11.2021 10 Howell 2658 1 w +3.5 FIDE Grand Swiss (10) 06.11.2021 11 Oparin 2654 ½ b −1.6 FIDE Grand Swiss (11) 07.11.2021 12 Ragger 2668 1 b +3.6 European Team Championship (1) 12.11.2021 13 Saric 2665 ½ w −1.4 European Team Championship (2) 13.11.2021 14 Erdos 2615 1 b +2.9 European Team Championship (3) 14.11.2021 15 Yilmaz 2626 1 w +3.1 European Team Championship (4) 15.11.2021 16 Sargissian 2664 1 b +3.6 European Team Championship (5) 16.11.2021 17 Mastrovasilis 2619 1 w +3.0 European Team Championship (6) 18.11.2021 18 Jobava 2582 1 w +2.6 European Team Championship (7) 19.11.2021 19 Grischuk 2773 ½ b 0.0 European Team Championship (8) 20.11.2021 20 Mamedyarov 2765 1 w +4.9 European Team Championship (9) 21.11.2021 There were only 4 games against real top Grandmasters. Grishuk, Caruana, Vachier-Lagrave and Mamedyarov. 15 games were against 2600-2704 rated players and 1 game against a 2580. Of the 33.2 rating points he earned. Against the 4 super-grandmasters, he only earned 0.2 points. So at the moment he is just as good as the other top grandmasters (excluding Carlsen) in classical at the moment. Of course, he is only 18, but I would like to see a real classical Super-GM tournament. I am curious if he can compete at that level structurally.

That's how the Elo system works. It's a relative measure of the expected score for a given difference in rating. Scores against lower rated opponents are just as valid in establishing a rating. A 2800 rated player is expected to score 13.5/20 against a 2673 rated average opponent. He scored 16/20 which is a performance rating of 2913.
