Busting Victorian myths: corsets

Say a' a corset' and majority of people imagine a torturous devise from the dark and scary Victorian times. Indeed, as a historical interpreter, I have met with a lot of people claiming that you couldn't possibly walk, move, breathe etc - ( including the Great British Sewing Bee expert from season 3.... what a shame); that women had ribs removed, organs deformed etc - it is a miracle the human race survived, in fact.
Well, this is just another myth. Corsets, just as nowadays bras, spandex etc, have their pros and cons, but they are not the evil vice crushing your ribs ( and if yours is, then it doesn't fit and you should throw the thing away!).
You can read in detail about all the corset based myths and their debunking, as well what actual problems corsets might have caused here -
adamselindisdr...
and please read the blog post before you comment here with more myths ;-)
But in the meantime let us address the the myth that you cannot move ( I don't think we really need to work on the cannot breathe myth...;-) in a corset. I had a go at the usual Victorian activities - riding, archery, dancing, skating, cycling etc - and that's the result..
We also have a fb group - Corsets in action, where other share their exploits - have a look!

I have a friend who is a professional opera singer, and she wears a corset to perform, she says it is actually exceedingly helpful and doesn't at all impede her breathing. I think the problem is that people nowadays do not wear corsets properly, or assume that the goal was to be as small as possible. That's just a Hollywood myth, like most misconceptions.

I’m a singer, too, and I love having to wear a corset with costumes. I never have to think about my posture. I just relax into the corset and let it hold me up. I noticed in the video that her posture is exquisite, and all the activities she includes benefit from good posture. I thought I’d hate them and would have to fight them to breathe, but that couldn’t be more wrong. They’re great.

@Sarah Hamilfan Same. Made a corset for medieval garb, lo and behold my back stopped hurting, So I got several from Timeless Trends--its like a freaking miracle, how much better my back is (botched scoliosis surgery when I was 13). I am a voiceover actor and podcaster, and wearing a corset actually helps my breath control, rather than impedes it. My 22 year old daughter kept borrowing my corsets and likes them so much, she bought her own (Finally). Guess what? HER perpetual backaches, with a totally different cause, went away, too. And the last time I flew, I took my corset off to go through security and ended up having a nice chat about corsets with the lady from the TSA. She wears bespoke corsets and says they saved her back, too--even though she can't actually wear one at work--so its not just a brand thing, it's a proper fitting corset thing. Literally the opposite of what people think.

I find it rather annoying when I'm reading a book set in some time when most everyone would have worn corsets and the main character goes on for a paragraph about why she despises them. I was so excited when I read a book where the idea of not wearing her corset appalled the main character. And this was a steampunk novel and the main character was perfectly able to climb around the outside of the giant zeppelin in full Victorian skirts and a corset.

@@mchobbit2951 Very true, some people can't stand wearing corsets as not everybody has the same tolerance for tight fitted things/restriction, even if it's a perfectly fitted one. While a lot of people feel supported and comfortable in a well fitted corset, some people experience discomfort, even mild pain without any medical condition being involved.

Well novels describing modern era aren't full of characters hating their bra, although some do. When modern writers constantly make their historical characters hate corsets, it tells more about the writers prejudices than the era.

Personally, if I have to lift anything heavy or walk a long way I'd rather do it laced than not. Much more comfortable and easier on my back. Given that women in service wore them as well as the ladies in the parlor, I don't know why it is that people assume corsets are impractical.

There was a comment by a feminist author around 1900 who said, that the problem were not the corsets themselves, as there is nothing to say against a well tailored corset, but the poor servant girls and so would by very cheap corsets that are badly made, with bones that break and hurt, and that these are really a terrible thing!

Maybe they’ll even last so long that they end up saving me money in the long term?

@Milja Hahto A well made corset/bra should fit you. If it doesn’t then it’s not well made at all. Well made corsets/bras are made with good quality materials and made to fit you. If it doesn’t satisfy both requirements then yeah no it’s not well made. If it’s just made with good materials then the bra/corsets would. Just be good quality not well made.

It's my understanding (though I am no expert, just a history geek) that corsets were safe and semi-comfortable to wear when they were *well fitted*. A corset that was not over-tightened didn't restrict breathing, movement, or have negative effects on your health. The only issues occurred when they were tightened to an unhealthy point.

Having worn corsets to work and driving for several months, the trick is to lace firm/tight across the hips and use them as the base for support. The waist needs to be firm, but not uncomfortable and the bust needs to be either pushed up, or squished in slightly; whichever will hold in place better. Once you know where the sweet spots are for lacing, it’s really no big deal. It’s a lot like a longline bra, just way more comfortable since all the weight from your chest is being carried by your hips and not your shoulders.

Advance, curtesy for the queen, release the ball. I spent many a weekend in one of four corsets. My inspiration was a great grandmother who wore her corset into the 1980s. I bought a corset (1890) because I am very full-bosomed, and I find that bras are less comfortable. To support the weight I have to wear the bandeau really tight and the straps dig into my shoulders. I find the weight makes me bend forward and I get a sore upper back. In a corset the support is more distributed and more comfortable. Also it gives you great posture!

Robin Poe Where have you bought your corset and does it fit relatively discreetly under your everyday clothes? I ask because I'm in a similar situation although I don't think it's the cause of my back pain. But it is nearly impossible to find a bra that fits me and at the slightest weight change my size changes too so I'm seriously looking into getting a corset too. Then I will be able to adjust it and it will provide the support I need without cutting my shoulders with traditional bra straps. Because although I don't have back pain I DO have shoulder and neck pain from the straps of my bras since I can't find a well fitted bra anywhere. So instead of having the weight supported by the contour of the bra it's the straps that (excuse the pun) do the heavy lifting.
@RobinPoe

I bought my corset from Period Corsets (I posted the link above). They are very professional and their corsets are true historical replicas. I think the historical replicas are best, because the design is what real women actually wore in the past. I have the Theodora model, an Edwardian corset that works well for women that are full-busted. It is better to get one custom-fitted. The lacings can adjust to a substantial change in your body. However, they are usually constructed with a wide seam allowance, so they can be let out. In my case, I will probably go back to Period Corsets at some time to get the whole corset taken in. I seems to have lost quite a bit of weight. And it does do a lot to reduce back pain.

Yes! I wear my 17th c re-enactment stays at home, because they're so much more comfortable than a bra. I just wish the flat-fronted fashion would come back, then I could wear them all the time! I also have a Regency corset, which is very comfortable, although, being very long in the back, to give that Empire-line silhouette, you do have to be a bit careful when sitting down, or you can get weals on your upper thighs. As others have said, it's only the very tight-laced Victorian corsets which restricted movement or were uncomfortable. "Corset" is not a synonym for "agony"..!

I rode horses for a few years (sadly, couldn't afford to go for long enough to get properly good at it, I am JEALOUS), and my riding teacher back then actually taught me a lot about how riding sidesaddle was actually not even remotely as hard as a lot of modern astride riders think, with or without a corset on- thanks to that lovely jumping horn to squeeze between your legs on the saddle plus a properly built one, you can do damn near anything riding sidesaddle. I would only be concerned with the skirts getting tangled, if I were doing it myself. But come to think of it, the corset would have made riding even easier- back support! And for the larger busted ladies, boob support (I knew one girl who basically gave up on riding because she couldn't find anything to comfortably support her G cup chest in the saddle, and she did jumping...). Oh god how I would have loved THAT. Since I was little I've always had a badly shaped back (runs in the family plus parents never got on me about posture and then living in a situation where I almost always had only my bed to sit on at home for years as a teenager just solidified it) and I was almost always in pain after lessons. Currently I've done cosplay/costuming for almost a decade and am just starting into more historical costumes, and I finally bit the bullet and tried corsets in some of my more regal dresses. WHAT a difference. Not aching with my usual lower back pain after two hours on the con floor and I have a MUCH more photogenic regal posture in the fancy dresses. AND they're not even that hard to sew! Just time consuming with all the seams. ....someday I also plan to get out the antique clothes irons (the kind you heated on the stove) and sewing tools my grandmother had, which had belonged to HER grandmother (grandma was born in 1934), find a working foot treadle/non-electric sewing machine and try making Victorian or Edwardian clothes on the antique equipment too, and see just how tricky it was without the bells and whistles and electricity of today. And maybe get massive brownie points from the historical masquerade judges at CostumeCon. :P

When I was being taught how to ride, my teacher said I was really good with keeping my heels down but horrible at keeping my back straight, and would love to try again with a corset. I stressed myself out so much during high school that I gave myself back problems and can't sit straight or stand for long periods of time because it hurts, that I've been considering getting a few corsets to help with work.

Thank you for posting about riding sidesaddle. I was just going to ask how difficult it was compared to riding astride. I grew up in a rural area and took riding lessons as a girl. @SoundShinobiYuki
@SoundShinobiYuki 8 лет назад
***** It's definitely different from riding astride- and usually the horse also needs to be trained extra for it too- but yeah, it's really not any harder to learn than normal astride riding. There's plenty of evidence of Victorian-era ladies galloping and jumping on fox hunts alongside the men, all while riding sidesaddle and in their corsets and riding habits (And I agree, Victorian riding habits are so pretty), thanks to the invention of the jumping horn (also called a leaping horn or second pommel. If you wiki sidesaddle, it's called a few things). Without that extra horn, though, good luck doing anything but really simple, slow riding. Before it was invented, ladies typically either rode astride- which was not generally an acceptable practice- or had to have someone leading the horse in front if they wanted to do more than an ambling trot down the road.

Try reading 'No one told the horses'. It's by the actress who started in the 70s tv adaptation of Flambards, which is set in Edwardian times. It's about her experiences learning to ride sides addled for the role and a good read.

And like bras, there's a huge difference in comfort with things that fit properly versus ones that don't. I have a couple of corsets (I mostly wear them for lower back support when my arthritis is acting up, not so much for fashion) and they're cut differently and the one style was just more comfortable from the start than the other. (Now that I've broken them in, both work acceptably for what I want, but if I was going to buy another corset I'd get one with the cut that is just a better fit overall.)

I never found corsets restricting like so many people seem to think! one simply needs to put one on to see at once that it is in fact very comfortable and very supportive. I personally have scoliosis so I am well-acquainted with wearing back braces and certain types - especially the lower back support brace - feel very similar to wearing a corset. my back always aches when I have to try and keep it straight all day as I don't have a lot of lower back and shoulder joint muscles that most people do because of a lifelong habit of hunching frequently because of the pain of keeping my back straight. wearing a corset actually improved my posture tenfold as well as lessened the pain from keeping it straight all day very much! I don't know if others feel any fatigue or strain at all keeping their backs straight all day but surely they must do a little bit even if they don't have any back problems so a corset actually does all the work for you which is very nice! I'm not sure though if it is very good for developing back muscles or not. I don't know if it takes on all the work of supporting your back completely and therefore bad for building back muscles or if it does only a partial amount of work supporting your back and therefore aligning your back properly to build the right muscles. I'll have to look into that! now I'm very curious! but anyway the point of all this was that I find corsets incredibly comfortable but I don't know if that's just because it's so much hard work for me to keep my back straight all day because of my scoliosis and if others who do not have scoliosis or any other kind of back problem would not find it makes any difference to their comfort.

I just can't bend down easily in a corset, otherwise I have no complaints about it. It does help the back pain I have from fibromyalgia and an old injury from a slip-and-fall. Corsets are made to support your entire torso, back, chest, stomach, taking all the tension away from those areas, and if properly made and fitted I've heard it described as "wearing a hug". So I'm not surprised if you feel more comfortable with a corset! It's why people with scoliosis often are prescribed "medical back braces" which are basically underbust corsets. However, because they take so much of the strain off your torso, your muscles can atrophy, because they're not being used. Without a corset, they aren't allowed to become lazy, but if you wear a corset on a regular basis you should take breaks, perhaps even days-off if you can, and exercise your back and belly muscles specifically, or you WILL become dependant on the corset entirely, since your torso may become too weak to support itself properly, leading to more pain outside of the corset and making it a vicious cicle where you HAVE to wear the corset. TL,DR a well fitted corset is very good for back/chest support, both for mundane and medical reasons, just be mindful to make sure you don't lose your own support muscles.

Personally, I love wearing a corset. I have a pretty crappy underbust shaper (which I call a corset because it's a direct descendant and sounds fancier) and I don't even care about the shape it gives me. It fixes my posture so well! My back hurts less when I wear it. The only issue is that since it's one of those widely manufactured things it's not shaped to my specific body, so it's a little tighter than it needs to be.
@vnleao
@vnleao 6 лет назад
It’s relaxing but just remember that constant use of a brace-like garment will weaken the muscles and will eventually cause significant issues. Your muscles need to be engaged and used regularly. Make sure you’re strengthening those muscles properly through exercise to protect your core and spine. The key to good posture is proper core strength (barring any additional factors like scoliosis.) Your muscles are supposed to be naturally doing what a corset does. If you’ve got tension or pain, chances are that strengthening your core will go a long way to fixing that. A corset provides temporary relief but can make things worse in the long run if worn in such a way that your muscles aren’t getting engaged and used without supplementary strength-training. Diastasis recti can contribute to back pain because of how it affects core strength, and binding garments can be effective for making up for that if worn correctly (since not everyone can/wants to have surgery to fix it.) But again, your primary focus needs to be the muscle strength itself, with particular care to not aggravate the diastasis recti of course.

The corsets in this video are not tight laced. Tight lacing was what caused major problems for the women who did. I do think that for the majority of women who wore corsets, they didn't wear them so tight as to restrict breathing as they had more to do than faint onto a chaise lounge. Fashionable upper class women would have been tight laced but then the major pursuits would have been sedentary (embroidery, painting a screen etc.) I think that Scarlett O'Hara's 17 inch waist in Gone with the Wind and reports on society beauties would have greatly exaggerated how prevalent extreme tight lacing was. Considering that all women wore corsets it's not difficult to come to the conclusion that most people didn't have the time or inclination to wear their corset so tight. (Not practical if you're a busy farm wife.) That said, I wouldn't want to run a marathon in one, but for general activity it would probably be quite supportive provided it wasn't too tight.

You do have to remember that women of the day were tiny compared to us. My mother was 5'1", born in 1932 and weighed about 105-110 most of her life. Her mother, my grand, was 4'10". So a tiny natural waist was not all that uncommon. I remember my mother working in the 1960's (waitressing) and using a 20" napkin as a cummerbund. No boning, nothing unusual, she was just tiny. Me? I'm a huge horse, at 5'6" and weighing in at around 150-160 my whole life. But the way our family is, we have very small waists. Even in my late 50's, people would remark about my small waist. It just depends on body structure. And no, I never wore any waist cincher, long line girdle, or any other device to make my waist small.

I don't think one should make such a broad assertion. Most surviving female clothing is of children and not fully grown adults, so that might give a skewed perception. Of course, like you say some people were smaller, but even today you do get quite a few smaller women. Nutrition probably also played a role. All that being said, they weren't that much smaller than today's women (within a healthy range of BMI).

I grew up as part of a Jacobean reenactment group, and members of the public would constantly ask two really stupid questions about corsets, first was did poor people really wear them (not as much in our time period because whale bone, but there is A LOT of evidence of women in poor houses and work houses during the Victorian period still wearing their corsets), and the second was; don't the bones stab into you (not if you look after your corset and it is fitted properly). I did used to ride sidesaddle in a corset, but I have never tried ice skating, so thank you I know what I and my friend will be doing in the future.

As an engineer I had the idea that a corset or corsage >might< even be beneficial to women who are "blessed" with larger breasts and who experience back pains ... because the stomach muscles might help supporting the spine for which the back muscles alone might not be strong enough. The force of the stomach muscles would be "relayed" by the non-elastic bodice/corset to hold the back upright. As a man I couldnt really test this theory though, but as you said somewhere: women did wear these things for centuries, so there might even be a practical point to them.
@beth8775
@beth8775 8 лет назад
As a rather busty woman, if one has a weak core then yes, the corset provides a good deal of support. However, a healthy core is built on the transverse abdominus muscle which wraps all the way around your torso. Anatomically speaking, no external structural help is needed to transfer abdominal muscle power to aid the back. That's how the human body is built to begin with.
@Muck006
@Muck006 8 лет назад
The thing is that you need to "move about" to strengthen and train your muscles, but in todays "office world" or because of the little appliances which take work load off us (hoovering requires less work compared to a more manual way of cleaning the floor for example) that might not be the case anymore. Thus the back muscles become too weak. Sadly there is the continuous "negative propaganda" of corsets being bad ... so they are overlooked as a possible solution. Thank you for confirming my guess on the "supportive effect" of corsets.

This is actually the reason I got into corsetting. I'm a 32H. And no matter how fit I have been, (able to run 2 miles in 18 mins, 50 pushups on my fists in 2 mins, or walking over 40 miles a week at my work, for some examples in the past.) Wearing even a well fitting bra, or even going braless all the time still has caused me a lot of upper back, shoulder, and neck pain, not to mention migraines. Supplementing an overbust corset has done wonders to cut these discomforts down, as it distributes all that weight over a much larger area. So, yes I have found them very beneficial.
@priorattire
@priorattire 7 лет назад
That are not overbusts- Victorian corsets are mid. Use. Supporting the boobs, but not restrictive. Overbusts are more restrictive - and result in a wrong silhouette for historical purposes. Overbusts are modern invention, to cover things up when worn to be seen. underbusts again, mostly modern ( though first appeared in late Victorian period as sport corsets), and arę cukru/ but ni support for the bust- so for me definitely not more comfortable as I cannot wear modern bras...
@murphygirl4782
@murphygirl4782 7 лет назад
Not really. I like the security that they provide. I can handle a little restriction if it means I don't have to fight a migraine for 3 days. But it's not like I wear an overbust 24/7. I switch between them and bras. And I also wear underbusts as well.

I think part of it is also waist training and getting used to a corset. Tight lacing corsets were a major problem, of course, and I have studied deep into some of the horrible things women ended up doing to their bodies and internal organs due to tight lacing--I've even seen a preserved liver with ridges on it from being squished against the ribs for too long! But yes, if done safely and properly, and if you train your waist to get used to a corset, wearing one is fun and looks amazing.

I previously had back issue. I saw on a show how they reveal that a properly fitted corset can straighten your back. so I went out to buy one. the only way to fix the problem was to keep my back straight. I purchase a corset from "bras and things". it was annoying but only because it didn't let me slouch. But that was how it fixed it. By prevent it from slouching my back pain went away. I was wearing it to sleep. because the poor posture was making it painful for me to sleep. while wearing it is annoying its better than the pain. once my habit to reduce slouching improve I never wore it again. that was 4 years ago. corset has its advantages.

I find I actually prefer something with straps... but that's namely because I have rather large tracts of land and rather tiny hips in comparison. I work at a renaissance festival though, and a pair of bodies doesn't always give the proper support if there isn't the hip and waist shaping to work with it (as they generally had the tabs down the back, but not always the tabs at the hip, digging into the hips instead of using them for support. I actually find victorian corsetry to be much more flexible than renaissance corsetry in terms of range of motion, because of exactly that. A victorian corset tends to support well because it doesn't just end at the waist, but goes all the way down the hips, so the weight of the bust is better distributed. Early stays were not exactly the most well engineered pieces of foundation garments, whereas by victorian era, there was a certain physics to the corsetry that just worked nicely and was much more comfortable. I will say though, that if I work it well with a bodice, there is minimal boning, but FAR more support than any bra would ever give me. (and yes, I do archery. Added benefit of bodices and corsetry is avoiding the unintentional string snap in a tender place. *smirk*)

the problem was when women would wear them too tight and squish their organs, otherwise they were fine. I actually did an American pioneer reenactment where I wore fully boned stays all weekend long and did farmwork, chores, cooking, and even attended a barn dance in them with no problems at all! I even found they kept my back from hurting while tilling the soil because they didn't allow me to bend at the waste like I'm naturally inclined to do.

I tried to convince someone in a newspaper forum, that the torture of corsets was a myth. I didn’t succeed. The person did not believe that working women like housemaids or women on farms were also wearing corsets. And that abolishing corsets was a liberation. 🙄 I said: well, burning bras in 1970s was a liberation too. 🤷‍♀️

I gotta be honest, as someone who gets a big kick out of digging beyond the Hollywood representation and (strictly as a layman) trying to understand how people actually lived and thought in various historical periods, I've always been skeptical of this common refrain about Victorian corsets, and all manner of women's fashion before the 20th century. Like... do you think these women were stupid or something? That they would torture themselves day in and day out for the sake of fashion? Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if that phenomenon has only gotten worse with time, or at least hasn't changed much. You find elements of practicality in historical fashion that aren't even necessarily present in modern clothing. As you said - "women wore some sort of corset for hundreds of years" -- exactly! If it were really all that bad, they would not have done it for so long. I think it's a product of this notion that historically women's lifestyles and fashions were just a product of what men in power desired, but I don't think that's really true at all even if it's hard to pick that up with a retrospective view. Women have always played a massive role in the shaping of society, tradition, culture and politics, going back to the very beginning of civilization - there's no way they took a backseat to how their dresses were designed! Man, I've even been confronted with this idea that this kind of historical fashion was oppressive and demeaning, but man do I ever take the opposite view. These people knew what they were doing, and admittedly life was harder for everybody throughout history relative to how we tend to live nowadays in the developed world, but even when it comes to traditions of modesty and decorum for historical women I think it's ridiculous to assume that this wasn't primarily driven by the very people who adopted those customs!

Individuals who couldn't afford the whale bone, silks and crinolines; and perhaps even find it undesirable to wear such fine items in their every day chores.

@shazbros

I think corsets would be practical for archery since you need to have good posture and straighten up your back, as long as you don't tighten too much. Have you noticed how modern girdle for back support/back pain looks similar to corsets? A lot of people criticized how restricting and time-consuming old attires are but come on; I can say the same about modern fashion too. Women in professional fields are expected to wear layers of makeup which aren't healthy for your skin especially sensitive skins. And time-consuming! Heels are a pain to wear and bad for your back still people find it attractive so they rather go through the hell. A lot of women clothes are designed for smaller type body when people frames are diverse. And may I add there been casualty as a result of extreme diet just to fit in those fashionable tiny designer clothes? It isn't until recently more choices for larger type of body are available too.

I've posted under one of your other videos that I love the Victorian era..... I did my best within my budget to make my wedding have a Victorian feel with some modern touches and classical romanticism. I wore a wired corset for the first time under my wedding dress, and my wedding dress over the corset was thick in the bodice and was boned and a laceup. As a whole, it is the most comfortable thing I have ever worn. My helper was worried it would be too tight when she laced me up, but I had to instruct her that it needs to be quite snug. (I frequently asked people to feel my abdomen - it was firm, lol.) I am fortunate, though, that I got married in January because I don't tolerate heat well at all, lol!

I quickly discovered that a good corset is a genuine godsend when you spend 12-14 hours a day wearing custom-made reproduction "skin up" Tudor court dresses, not the All Hallows costume variety that comes with velcro and zippers.The corset helps your posture and lessens the weight/pressure of numerous petticoats, a farthingale and heavily beaded and embroidered underskirt and over skirt. The additional back support also spreads the destribution of weight in the heavy fur lined sleeves and embellished under-sleeves.

for Tudor you need either a boned kirtle, or for later, Elizabethan, a good pair of stays - both work in the same way a later corset would, providing a welcome bust and back support!

I think it doesn't affect you that much because where the corset holds is not a particularly bendy part of your back. you actually bend mostly from your upper back and hips instead of the middle. I know this cause I recently got surgery and got metal rods out in my back that hold my back straight in much the same places as where the corset sits and I cam still do pretty much everything I could do before the surgery, asside from bending down to touch my toes as some of my mobility has been altered. but really where the corset restricts isn't a very mobile area, so they shouldn't cause that much trouble. just gives the ladies good posture and a shaped torso and waist.

I am glad to see this myth busted (!) Alas so many writers buy into and perpetuate it. cf Elizabeth Swann in Pirates of the Carribean: "Do you like pain? Try wearing a corset!" Clothing of all sorts depends on what you want to do, for instance you would not go to Scotland and back dancing and doing cartwheels in high heels or a business suit - not that most people would expect to do that under any circumstances. As for the insinuation that men are forcing them to wear "painful" corsets... men wore corsets too.

The thing that most people don’t know and that I have only learned recently is daily corsets weren’t tight laced at all and some special occasions you might tight lace a little but padding was just as if not more common than tight lacing. And the stereotype is that people hate their bras so a stereotype of people hating corsets isn’t that far of a stretch. If a well fitted bra can be just as comfortable as going without with the bonus of support then a the idea of a well fitted corset makes sense. And as I can function and be comfortable in a correctly fitted bra and body shaper a corset which does the job of both would work just as well.

The first corset-type-thing I ever wore was to my junior prom (which is to say I was newly 17) - a dreadful, modern, hook-and-eye only, off-the-rack, straight-sized thing on my plus-size body. I knew it was tight, but I didn’t realize how tight in the wrong places it was until I started feeling faint several hours in. I had to go to the restroom and have a friend help me out of the corset just so I could breathe for a bit! Since then, thankfully, my interest in and understanding of corsets has grown. I’ve yet to find the picture perfect one for me, but I’ve found several that I do enjoy nonetheless. I do hope, one day, to get a custom-made corset.

The problem was not the corsets, the problem is that they were over tightened. Anyone that was anyone would try to have a tinniest waist possible. The same as today people dying to be skinny. Plus saying that a corset in not constricting and restricting is a massive overstatement. Not constricting in relation to what? And yes, i studied History.

It's true, many women did over-tighten their corsets. It is important to remember that those women were actually in the minority, similar to the women that today might take three hours getting dressed and never go a day without 7 inch heels are in the modern minority. spectacular behavior always attracts more attention. In modern New York you may see posters of what super tall heels do to ladies' feet, and in victorian times there were cartoons in newspapers mocking the women who over-tightened their corsets. It was funny because the general public saw it as a bit ridiculous, even back then.

Not constricting in relation to what you expect it to be. You can still bend over to pick things up, sit, walk etc without discomfort.

In addition to that, I'd say corsets actually prevented discomfort, by carrying the weight of the crinoline, crinolette or bustle that would otherwise dig into the woman's hips.
@sophiejones7727
@sophiejones7727 7 лет назад
true to a point. This was mainly the case for young women: girls between 13 and 15. Once a girl was married she had little reason to overtighten her corset. Of course, if the girl didn't eat too much and exercised enough she would not likely have to overtighten her corset. They were no more constricting than other garments which people have worn over the course of history such as high heels, those geisha sandals, or the toga. People have always worn garments for beauty and to mark their status which were highly impractical, restrictive and whatnot. She was saying corsets were not exceptional: not that they allowed total freedom of movement. As a general rule of thumb though, if the activity does not require you to bend your back it can be done in a corset.

I have to say I like how they make a figure look. I noticed it also gives you a good posture- that should be good for the back.

For riding it seems to be similar to wearing a protective vest which is less moldable and is usually used for jumping.

Thank you so much! I thought at that time women stayed at the house taking care of household work, being a host, and staying mostly indoors keeping a pale skin tone(well refering aristocrats). I should do more research so thank you sooo much!

This was a really interesting video. With regard to riding astride, do you think a corset would help to improve posture while allowing enough flexibility to ride properly? I think it might be possible with an underbust but I've never tried
@priorattire
@priorattire 8 лет назад
it absolutely does for sidesaddle - we make a whole range of Victorian riding corsets ( shorter in the hip) and modern sidesaddle riders use either them for riding, or their modern equivalents - underbusts with elastic panels. They offer great back support, especially for a long time in the saddle! it is not too bad for astride too, however it needs to be shorter i both at the side and lower up . I have ridden in such and i must say that I was far more comfortable with a corset on a side saddle - whereas astride, with the movement being just a bit different, i was better off without. Still I am working on a lightly boned corseted waistcoat for astride riding, as I can no longer wear sport bras for longer periods of time ( costochondritis - the bras base sits just atop the most painful part of the ribs),, so will play with t construction over the summer

You're wonderful ... and just blew away the comments I made about corsets on a previous video ;^) Reading some comments below, once I lose some weight, I might try a corset myself. I have poor UPPER back support, so not sure if a corset would help with that. I know standing straight helps a lot though, so maybe it would! Fitting garments properly is everything to good looks. We are very, very sloppy now, especially in the US. It embarrasses me to wear shorts and such, but I live in a very hot part of the US. And I am amused to see the girls on date night, 5" stiletto heels, cute little slip dress [less than an old chemise!], and the boyfriend in jeans and a t-shirt. It's a shame the guys don't at least make an effort.

I've thought about corset training, a girl I work with was doing it and she was fine, she is a CNA, lifting all those people and in a corset, it has to be kind of comfortable. I'm very interested in the time period and would love to do what you ladies are doing, perhaps someday.

There was such a thing as a riding corset?! I'm very new to the world of historical dress, learning through Bernadette Banner, Cathy Hay and the like here on youtube. So seeing these kinds of mythbusting videos is really awesome and interesting. Modern people don't realise that corsets weren't always boned or at least not always boned with materials such as steel. There's corded corsets, reed corsets etc.
@priorattire
@priorattire 4 года назад
Of corse there were riding corsets, sport and bathing corsets. And steel is very flexible and comfortable...
