Tbh don’t worry what some of the salty people say on here, the internet is full of self righteous people who, unless you’re perfect, will come at you for the most trivial of things. You’re doing a solid job and if someone wants to have a hissy fit because you were 2 inches lower then that’s honestly just ridiculous, if it’s someone legit trying to help then it’s always good to have direction from someone’s who maybe does it as a professional and you can fine tune it but overall you’ve achieved a hell of a lot on your homestead for having a full time job and working the farming aspect.

Don't forget, a movie critic has never made a movie. And I have never seen a monument to a critic! Zig Ziglar always said, "It's not where you start that matters. It's where you finish!" Remain humble and you will be a student all your life.

You wanted to cut a tree down and make firewood...and that’s exactly what you did! Sometimes the results matter more than the method of getting there! Keep doing what you’re doing, that’s how you’ve gained such a big audience in the first place!

I never saw my dad cut the back cut off set from the notch. He cut wood all my life until he died at 77. I’ve been cutting all my life and never saw that “new” way until RU-vid. I’m still cutting at 64. The process makes sense and I have been using it. What doesn’t make sense is people being rude or even just blunt to correct what they see as a mistake. Decency people!

It just hit me. I am in my early 70s, and I am now recalling why I like your vids so much ... As a little boy, my grandma had a little (and OLD) piece of the country right in the middle of a neighborhood that had grown up around her. She had chickens and rabbits and fig trees with trunks the size of a man's thigh as well as cooking pear trees and pecan trees. It was a little farm. She even had a black Manx cat that lived in her attic. As an older teen-ager I would work for her doing odd jobs, and found it to be a place where I could get away from the rigors of attending junior college which was mentally demanding, and playing in a rock and roll band which was physically demanding. Your videos give us all that kind of place to go ... So, thank you. BTW: My older brother was an expert with a band saw and joiner and planer, and used all that to build a recording studio with a control room made of pecky cypress (cypress with worm holes) taken from a place called, "Sweetbay Swamp." He named the studio, "Sweetbay Recording Studios." The sticks were vertical and the walls were "corrugated" and an absolute work of art. The photo of me here, is in that control room with a little of the wall in view behind me (I know ... tiny little picture!). Taken from circa 1974. Your hickory cabinets are gorgeous!

You can please some of the people some of the time , but not all of the people all of the time.. The feeling of I can do this, I will do this and I did this is alien to a lot of people. Keep up the love, the desire and the ability to do all that is necessary. Here is to y’all’s future.

I hate it when others are quick to judge and most of the time they are sitting on their butts. So quick to give their advice if you want it or not. For me I enjoy your videos the most because you're so real and honest. I also admire you for doing what you guys do. Full time jobs and everything on the farm. So many want the easy way out but you want the good feeling of doing it yourselves. I admire that so don't worry about what some people say because they don't pay your bills or enjoy the feeling of doing things themselves. Can't wait for next video.

Watching my Grandfather build their retirement sailboat in their barn back in the early '50s, I asked him how he ever learned so much. He told me to just keep my ears, eyes, and mind open, trying the best you can to learn and accomplish. "Better to be a Jack of all trades and master of none than to be a know-it-all expert that gets nothing done!" Served me well all my life, and still learning.

The steers already know where the water and hay is, they have already 'explored' their environment I am sure. They are more aware than you know. They are uncomfortable today, and will be for about a week or so...you made them steers yesterday, it will be a while before they recover. I agree with Larry Whitaker. I too have experience.

Your pasture is good enough for now the cows would rather eat grass. Don't have to worry about them finding water. if it is available, they'll find it. It is good to put grain out for them. Not because they need it, just for training purposes to be able to lure them to where you need them. I've used hay in the winter to do that. I stopped feeding them a round bale outside and for a week or so fed them inside the barn so I could close them in, sort the ones I wanted to wean or send to sale etc. Just saves a whole lot of chasing in circles around the pasture before they finally go into the barn. Trained them to go in themselves for feed, then just wait for the day they are all in and close the door.

By chance when trying to call the steers did you say “here cows?” Was just curious if that is what you said. When I was a bit younger working on my cousins beef raising farm ( they have several hundred head of Black Angus, White Face, and a French beef breed called Charolais (sp?) beautiful animals all in their own right). He calls them by yelling something like “Come Boss” which seems to work well. This may help you as well. Love the channel Evan and family (critters too).

I agree with you whole heartedly about the self sustainable DIY. I’m like you, try to do everything by myself even if I’m not a pro. I’m pretty good at most things though after doing them for many years. Felling trees is new for me last year, I cut a bunch of trees and they all fell. 😆 As long as I don’t put myself in serious danger I’ll keep trying to learn new things a d DIY. I built my ultimate duck house in 2 months by myself, wasn’t easy but it turned out amazing. The shots around the farm are cool. I’m sure you feel accomplished when you get something done just like I do. Have a good one bud, Chad.

You and your lovely wife are doing just fine. Do what You do best and stop worrying what others are saying. Like i said. That's why I don't have a channel up. We are all gonna do things differently. Based on what we each learned for ourselves based on where you live. What works here for me may never work up north, east or west. It's the knot heads that think their way is best and correct. For their small universe it is. Only because the other ways were never tried or did correctly. Who cares. It isn't their life or place. Be happy with what you have and what makes your life easier and life feeling. Enjoy Evan. Did my hair today as well.

Coming a little high is just an extra safety protocol that keeps the tree from sliding off the stump backwards if the hinge is fully released and the top hits other trees on the way down. Loggers will commonly be level and nip off the sapwood in the hinge and even cut the heartwood out of the hinge so they don't pull fiber.

Evan I agree there is no learning, satisfaction or honor in hiring out for all the projects. I'm a Boston transplant out out here in the Mid-West living the American Dream. I just turned 60 and spend every non working job minute working my little micro hobby farm. No retirement for me I'm loving every minute I have left at age 60. I noticed you use trash cans for feed. I recently converted an old frig into a grain bin. I love it. It holds over 600 Ibs. I also converted another one into a deck cooler. I attached wood slabs all around and a top of them. A nice coat of stain and they look awesome. Thanks for sharing your life and giving me tons of great ideas.

You hit the nail on the head Evan. Could not agree with you more. I am much older than you, but have always had that same philosophy and I have taught my son the same. I do everything myself that I possibly can. That's not saying that I have not met my match or sometimes I just have to man up and hire someone. As you said, that is the only way to learn and sometimes we do learn the hard way. I have learned a lot and gain a lot of knowledge and before I moved to the country I was always sought out for my advice on different projects around my neighborhood. Hopefully someone will learn from me whether they learn not to do it my way or my way was great! 🙂 You were one of the first channels I found and are one of the first I view each week. Keep up the great work and keep on doing! I also enjoy learning from you on doing my own videos. Not even close to your quality, but hopefully I will get there. It takes quite a bit of equipment to shoot the shots you get. One of my future purchases will be a wireless mic.

Beef cattle tend to take care of themselves. They found the low-lying water source as soon as you released them into the field and will most likely use that as long as it’s running. If it dries up, they’ll find the water trough. They seem to be happy grazing on green grass and just aren’t interested in the hay. My dad gave his beef cattle a treat of oats once a day so they would get used to be handled once in a while. He never fed them corn though because cows don’t digest it as well as other animals do. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.

EVAN, if you want to have the most fun you've ever had in your life fishing for those bass, get yourself a fly rod and learn how to use it. It's easy to learn and it will make those bass feel like you've hooked into a grouper! So much fun.. Miss Rebecca would absolutely love it i believe. Btw, try gently pushing your steers up into the corner where your hay bunker is at so they understand its there. They're new to that pasture so they could just be apprehensive about going up to the structure. Take care and God bless. -Russ (Florida)

I’m cutting my husband’s hair too. I’m getting better at it. You did a great job cutting down the trees, You cut the trees your way so that you are Always Safe, that is all that matter.

I agree with you live and learn. Keep trying and then try some more. You and Rebecca are doing a great job. I watch everyone of your videos and enjoy watching you both grow and expand yourself and your homestead keep up the good work and God bless you both 😊

Hey! If feeding cattle doesn't work out, you can live off the fish!! Seriously, our ancestors learned things from the family. Most of us don't have 'farmer' parents, but we have a vast "family' of videos we can learn from. Some are a bit 'flakey' but you''ll soon find the people who know what they are doing and most interested in helping! BTW, the haircut looks great! Can I get an appointment?!
