As I edited this video I realised that Estonian seems to follow this Batman actor around. Tell me in the comments: What other film was the actor who played Batman in, where he plays a character who is supposed to speak Estonian?

@@PewPewPlasmagun it’s a joke that works because of its “incorrectness” 😅 he’s using exaggeration to create the Humor. Of course it’s not true that it’s closer to a non-existent Alien language - but that’s what makes it funny. Heptopod here is basically a stand in for “it’s really damn hard and complicated / feels impossible to figure out” - but if he’d simply added that description to the sentence instead of “it’s close to Heptopod” there would be no joke at all now, would there? 🤣 If by “correct” you mean that the language isn’t all that difficult (for YOU) then you need to factor in that perceived language difficulty changes depending on which languages you are familiar with plus a bunch of other things and is highly subjective. So the joke could still somewhat “objectively” be humorous to you if you put yourself in the speakers perspective, even if, for you personally, it’s not “correct” 😊 Make sense? Eek I hope I didn’t sound to patronising, it’s not meant that way, I’m really just explaining my opinion, no attack or offense meant ♥️

@daysandwords
@daysandwords Год назад
Haha... yeah, there's a French linguist who comments on all of my videos and he and I have been discussing what the various dubbed versions of shows do about the "language problem". e.g. I'm not sure if you know the show "Community" - but the entire first seasons revolves around some Americans taking a Spanish class (and being terrible at Spanish). And I found that in the Latin American version, they're taking an English class. (I checked one day just out of interest.) That would make so much of the series super hard to do, since they're clearly in the USA, but I guess the dubbing team decided it was the smoothest solution. That linguist guy lives in Spain and he also said that they'd actually "remastered" the text on the floor when Bruce is trying to solve all the Riddler's clues, so that they're in Spanish. I have seen that increasingly in dubs, as it becomes easier to digitally edit stuff like that, e.g. kids shows in Swedish, but they're actually from the USA and they've changed all the signs in the school that the show is set in etc.
@MrSalas
@MrSalas Год назад
@@daysandwords Yup! I have seen that show. Didn't watch the Spanish dub but I recall that episode. And yes, they did edit the movie so that some text would be in Spanish. It didn't work too well in this movie but it was SO GOOD in Joker. I recall the brief scene of his notebook being ALL in Spanish. It's hit and miss. Disney has always done this for their animated movies. Another curious happening was in Toy Story 3 when Buzz location/voice is changed to Spanish. In the latin American dub he is changed to Spaniard Spanish. In the european Spanish dub he is changed to the Andaluz accent and it's freaking hilarious.

When something like this happens in movies, I always think about the spanish subbed version that runs in movie theaters in spanish speaking countries. (if there is one). How will they make this work?
@daysandwords
@daysandwords Год назад
So do I... and there are really interesting examples, like Community, in which the whole series revolves around a Spanish study group... except that in the Spanish one, it's an English study group! So presumably they can never bring up the fact that they are in the USA... and clearly all American? It's super weird haha. I haven't seen the Spanish one myself but when I saw that Spanish was a language option I checked just that detail.
@bofbob1
@bofbob1 Год назад
They kept it the same and everybody in the theater laughed during the reveal. What was really weird is that they translated on-screen writing into Spanish. Like Bruce writing on the floor, that was directly in Spanish... in a subbed version where everyone is speaking English... So Bruce sucks at Spanish, but apparently he can write it just fine. ^^ For Community, from what I remember they kept it as a Spanish study group, and a lot of jokes were lost as a result. But that was the European Spanish version. The Lat Am version might be different, which would explain what Lamont is saying.
@daysandwords
@daysandwords Год назад
At least in the first episode of the Latin American Spanish one, it's an English study group because there's a bit where Britta says "OK can you say that in Spanish right now then?" (trying to call Jeff out on his BS) and he says "Pleased to chicken nugget don't scratch my car" or something, and in the Spanish audio (I now remember that I switched over just to see what they did there), he literally says those words but in English, whereas in the original he says that... but in Spanish. I'm sure you get what I mean.
@bofbob1
@bofbob1 Год назад
@@daysandwords I just realized I have both versions on Netflix. In the one marked as "Spanish", it switches to English like you said. In the one marked as "European Spanish", they stick to Spanish. Go figure. Not sure which one makes more sense tbh. Kind of an impossible problem. Switching to English probably allows for more jokes to be translated though. A few others that come to mind: - in the French dub of Friends, Phoebe teaches Joey Spanish instead of French. That one works fine, since nothing hinges on what language he's learning. - the "Muskatnuss, Herr Müller!" scene in Le Grand Restaurant. In the original French, de Funès switches to German, since he's talking to a German officer. In the German dub, they just have him change tone and use a louder, more authoritative voice when the Hitler 'stache shows up. It's still kind of funny, but not nearly as much as the French version. Now I'm wondering if there's an English dub of La Grande Vadrouille and, if so, how they handled the bathhouse scene. "Comment ça "merde alors"? But alors you are French!" ^^

Both Bruce and Alfred notice that the riddle is grammatically incorrect. They just belived it was a mistake on the part of the Riddler. Also the girl can have an Estonian passport, but be Russian - there are Russians that have dual passports -, or an Estonian citizen of Russian descent - which are about a quarter of the population.
@daysandwords
@daysandwords Год назад
Batman is only TOLD it's incorrect. He doesn't know what is incorrect about it, because as soon as he learns specifically what that is, he figures it out. If he had thought to ask Alfred what the problem was, then he would have known. There is no evidence in the film to support the idea that Bruce knows it should be "la".
@aviztar

@@daysandwords We're never told how good or bad his spanish is. Besides, Alfred does point out what the mistake is - the line is easy to miss, but it's there. He figures it out after Penguin tells him it's wrong because that's the first time he thinks to himself that the error might be intentional
@daysandwords
@daysandwords Год назад
@@aviztar What are Alfred's words when he points out what the mistake is? All I remember is "I'm afraid his Spanish isn't perfect"... Anyone proficient in Spanish would see it straight away and wonder if there was something more there. Look how quickly Bruce picks up the other riddles, e.g. "He lies still."

Personally I never understood the criticism that Bruce doesn’t know Spanish because in the Batcave scene with Alfred, he did understand that Rata Alada meant rat with wings, and related it to a stool pigeon. I thought the plot line was about him not realizing that Riddler deliberately made a mistake with his grammar, and it took The Penguin pointing it out for it to click in his mind.
@daysandwords
@daysandwords Год назад
Yes you're right, he does know "rata alada" means rat with wings, but that doesn't mean he knew that it was "la" and not "el". I feel that it's way way way more likely that he's only got very basic spanish (you only need to know alada, and "rata" is obvious) and therefore doesn't know that it's el and not la, whereas any decent Spanish speaker would see the error straight away and since he knows that Riddler does stuff like that deliberately, he would see the answer immediately. Like I've said to others, the specific nature of the error needed to be pointed out to him. Alfred doesn't believe the gender could be important so he doesn't mention it, Bruce just doesn't know to begin with. I don't know who is "criticising" the film for implying that Bruce doesn't speak Spanish... I didn't see any such criticism, it just struck me in the cinema that a "real life" Bruce Wayne would have known that.

What I find strange is that...technically Bruce/Batman is supposed to be multilingual(with all his training and traveling aroundthe world and whatnot) , so this shouldn't have even been a plot point issue.

@@daysandwords I'm quite late into the conversation, but as a mexican I too didn't realize the mistake at first. Not because I'm dumb, but here you could say "El rata" and be correct about the gender. I've seen it various times since "rata" could also mean robber, so "El rata" would mean "The (masculine) robber" which would actually be logical when talking about the penguin.

It was a poorly scripted bit with the Penguin that made Batman look like he didn’t know, when he obviously did because Alfred had already told him anyway. The idea was supposed to be that he just didn’t pay attention to the grammatical mistake until Penguin pointed it out, which prompted him to realise that it can’t just be a mistake because nothing Riddler does is not intentional.
@daysandwords

There is a mistake in the title of the video. In Spanish, “sí”(where there is an (acute) accent placed over the letter ‘i’(making it ‘í’)) means “yes” in English, and the Spanish word “si”(where there is NO (acute) accent placed over the letter ‘i’) means “if” in English. Thus, what the title of the video really translates to (from Spanish to English) is: “if, ( I ) speak Spanish.” Whilst, the translation of the phrase (from English to Spanish) “yes, I speak Spanish.” Is spelt : “Sí, hablo español.”
@daysandwords

That's actually the thumbnail, not the title. But also, it wasn't a mistake. I wanted to use that font, and that font had no í, that is to say, it was not capable of making that letter, so it appears instead in a different font and looks completely bizarre. Since I don't speak any Spanish and just got the translation from Google, and everyone knows I don't speak Spanish (channel name is there to help any newcomers haha) - I didn't think anyone would care.

Your accent betrays that you are Australian just as mine betrays that I come form Eastern Europe. My vague accent betrays that I had more resources to allocate to learning a language then my neighbours, who speak with strong regional accent or can barely build a sentence. Even occupation may become obvious just from distinctions people make. Weight and mass may be the same to you, but not to physicists On the other hand it just makes exporting harder I can remember at least a dozen cases where something was broken by the language One that comes to mind is "The Ultimates 2", where mystery about who is the traitor would be broken on the first page, because you would have to address said traitor as a woman in my native language (and many other European languages as well)
