So glad I watched this. Installed a 19inch front tyre manually with difficulty and it was a bit squashed at the last point not making any beed seal. After trying various tricks like taping up the gap and using a circumferencial rachet strap I thought I was going to have to remove it. Anyway I essentialy applied your techneque but used liquid brake cleaner, injected into the valve head (inner valve out) and some around the rim to wick it in. It lit up, but nothing, I gently kicked it and it popped onto the rim. So happy!
I own a mountain bike with TLR (tubeless ready rims) and tires, which have been becoming very popular amongst bicycle enthusiasts, and with knowledge of the ether method, I searched and found this video, however the mountain bike tires being very similar in that they have a bead and bead channel they do however have to have a liquid latex sealant added into the tire about 2 to 4 ounces depending on tire size, which is used to seal small punctures from occasional small thorns and whatnot. With that said, I'm certain that the sealant itself is inert and would pose no threat to a violent explosion, except the tire would have to be in the upright position when the butane is ignited if this method is even compatibly possible. On another note, bicycle tires are a lot thinner than motorcycle tires, and pressure could blow the tire, but I'm not sure, but it'd be interesting to find out.
Thanks for carrying out the tests and highlighting the dangers. So on the test kit the starter fluid remained ignited, that’s worrying if it stays lit inside the wheel. Also if that’s a 1200 GS tyre it would have a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System sensor, spraying butane into the valve stem and lighting it on fire is very risky and costly. It’s probably something that should only be done if you can’t get to a garage. I couldn’t seat the bead on both GS wheels and just took it to a Motorcycle Tyre place.
The flame inside the tire remains lit for a very short time, fractions of a second. Then the oxygen is consumed and the flame goes out. Combustion requires very specific air/fuel ratios. Once that ratio drops the flame stops. The video does show the flame burning longer outside the tire because oxygen continues to reach the flame. As for damaging a TPMS sensor because of the flame? While anything is possible, it's unlikely because of the short duration.
@@HidalgoRides good point regarding the lack of oxygen, I missed that. In any case it's good to know as many methods as possible and start with the safest then when you loose your temper just before you reach for the sledgehammer try flammable fluid 😅. Thanks for your reply.
Thanks for the kind comment. No, haven't done this with a converted wheel. Don't see any reasons why there would be any issues. But next time I swap tires I'll do it and report.
I have no experience with propane, but the same principles would probably apply. The issue with propane is the delivery to the inside of the tire. How would you do that? It has to be directed to the inside of the tire, in just the right proportions for combustion to occur. If there's a lot of excess propane you will not be able to get it to burn, or there might be the possibility of a larger explosion.
I don't know. Try it and report back 8^) Being serious now, I don't think there'd be a problem. The valve core is not in the stem when doing this process. While there is a buildup of pressure in the tire from the exploding gasses, the gasses vent out the sidewalls first, then the beads seat against the rim, and the remaining gasses vent out thru the open stem. I've never heard of any TPMS issues from this process but that doesn't mean there haven't been any. Understand that this process is for emergency bead-seating in the field. So once you've solved that emergency, then you can worry about your TPMS sensor when you get back to civilization. Of course the BEST method of seating a bead is to use your shop compressor, but very few riders carry one of those when they go riding.
@@bestrestproducts648 I didn't get to try it out. I used the ratcheting strap method and it worked like a charm. I changed quite a few motorcycle tires in my day...and this was the first one that I've had trouble getting to bead. Usually I have the opposite problem in that when spooning on a new tire; it wants to bead before I finishing spooning it on making the last 1/4 a pain in the hind quarters. Was a good learning experience!
